My Dad used to whittle on twigs of cedar with a pocket knife, smooth them with sand paper, and make them any shape he felt like. Most of them were rounded, tear drop shapes. He drilled small holes with a hand drill to attach the loops. That would let it hang from a chain for a necklace or bracelet.

Then he finished them with clear very shiny spray lacquer. The redish wood looked interesting, and people liked them.

I think any kind of wood would work, and if you are patient enough, you could even drill holes through a bit of wood and carve it into a bead. I gave wood sticks to my art students, and they had a great time carving designs on them with ordinary 3" long screws.

I'm imagining beads with funny faces on them or simple straight line decorations.

Small tree branches fall down in my yard pretty regularly, so there's a lifetime supply of free material just laying on the ground.

Wood could also be painted with acrylic paint.

If you want something easier, buy pre-cut shapes from the craft store, decorate with beads, buttons, glitter, etc and glue on pin backs also from the craft store.

I love it that some other people out there want to do this!
