How to Brighten Your Nails

A bowl of leftover lemons, used for brightening nails. After using lemons in drinks and recipes, I store them in a container in the fridge to use when my nails need a bit of a pick-me-up. Using nail polishes can leave stains on your fingernails, even with a light base coat. With clean fingers and nails, dip your fingertips into the lemons and twist. The alpha-hydroxy acid in the lemon will brighten your nail fibers and break down any other grime in your nails. Rinse with water, dry, and apply a hand lotion or oil. Your nails will look so fresh!

Yes, it totally works. My mum used to do it when I was a kid. Back then I had no need to brighten anything ;) Now, these peels and pulp are my life!

If dark nail polish has left your nails yellowed or if you want to just brighten up your natural nails, scrub your nails gently with nailbrush topped with your favorite hand soap sprinkled moderately with baking soda.

I have head that you can apply a small amount of tooth whitener under your nail, real or acrylic, to keep them clean. Has anyone else heard of this and tried it? If so, how did it work?

I'm super fussy about my nails when it comes to food preparation, so I keep a good nail brush by my kitchen sink. If I have lemons on hand ( which I usually do) I just use lemon juice and a nail brush to scrub under my nails.

If I don't have lemons, plain old white vinegar does the trick. The acids in vinegar and lemons are natural disinfectants, and they are chem-free, economical products most people have on hand anyway.
