Make Cat Toys Out of Recycled Materials

Reduce, reuse and recycle! That seems to be my mantra now. Hmm, need more cat toys? Take an empty toilet roll tube and cut into 1 inch rings and toss one on the floor, lightweight, easily batted about, cheap (lol) and an endless supply!

Take the same empty tube and place in an old tube sock (lots of those around since washer and dryer eat matches daily), a pinch of catnip and a jingle bell. Close tight with a rubber band or string and fold top down to cover closure. They love hugging and attacking this one, so be sure to check for signs of wear and to make sure closure stays secure.

My cats have always loved the plastic ring that tears off the milk jug (also some juice and all water jugs). I move the fridge twice a year and have dozens of them pushed under it from cat play LOL.

Old sweaters going in the trash? Cut the sleeves off and make cat pillows. Stuff with a little bit of cotton and some catnip. You can sew up both ends or velcro one end so you can add fresh catnip. To really make it special add some threads hanging down from one end and put a length of thread on the other end for a hanger. For kitty nirvana sew a couple of jingle bells on the hangar end and place it on the doorknob on the back of a closet or bedroom door.

There are lots more ideas I have learned from 60 years of loving cats however the best cat toy ever is a paper bag LOL.

Please watch out for the rubber bands. The cat can chew and swallow them. I had a Siamese that was nuts about rubber bands. Used to "fish" them out of desk drawers that were not closed tightly. She also loved playing (and eating) the twist ties for plastic storage or garbage bags.

She managed to snare enough rubber bands to cause a serious intestinal blockage that almost killed her!! After a very upsetting hospital stay for surgery and emergency life-saving measures, she NEVER was allowed near a rubber band or a twist tie! Please be careful!

One of my cats (the black one in the photo) loves to chase the plastic rings off of mayonaisse jars. He will even play fetch with it for hours. Our other cat, the white one in the photo, likes to play with pieces of dry cat food that somehow get dropped on the floor. She will go crazy batting it all around the kitchen. My cats are easily amused by the simplest things and won't even play with most cat toys from the store.
