Dealing With Extremely Sensitive Skin?

My skin is extremely sensitive, if I touch or scratch my face it goes red. Inexpensive earrings make my ears peel (it's gross) and tanning booths give me bumps after using them. Is there an easy way to calm down irritated skin?

May I suggest using fragrance free cosmetics. Dove has a really good fragrance free soap and body wash. You may be allergic to fragrances. Please give this a try if you haven't already. Good Luck!

I also have very sentisive skin..I have found that Aloe Vera Gel seems to help quite a bit...just rub it on where ever the Hive or spot is...may take 2-4 times to clear it up, but it works...usually I find it by the sunburn remedies. It is either blue or green. The brand that seems to work the best for me is "good earth", from Wal-Mart

I also have this kind of skin. I am allergic to scratches... (break out in hives)... like from a necklace rubbing against my skin. Also, my ears have an allergic reaction to metals so I dont wear ear rings... (I've decided scabby ears arent really sexy.. lol) I told the dermatologist about the reaction to cosmetics on my face... He told me to look at the ingredients in each and find what ingredient they have in common. I'm allergic to methylparaben and anything with the word "urea" in it. The dermatologist tells me they are preservatibes. Soooo I guess I am advising you to go the simple route.

Avoid that which makes your skin get these red bumps rather than to try to remedy them. You'll be pleasantly rewarded with discovering the innate inner glow that you posess. Keep it simple. By the way, Dove bar soap is the only product I can use on my skin (not the liquid). Lotions make my hands and legs worse so I try to avoid them. Use Vaseline on your hands at night if they are dry... If this doesnt work for you, see a dermatologist. You're worth it and owe it to yourself. Treat yourself like a princess. After all you are one! I also have terribly sensitive skin. I can't even wear expensive jewely, like gold or silver. I also gave up on wearing earrings because they make my ears scab up.

I also use aloe vera. I either buy the gel, or use it right off the plant (which is best for me). I second Pat5617, who says avoid fragrances.

Good luck...

I see you live in Calgary AB where winter weather is not kind to sensitive skin. Since you seem to have EXTREMELY sensitive skin I would suggest you see your doctor. He may refer you to a dermatologist. Good luck.

To protect yourself against nickel allergy - in most inexpensive earrings, etc - you can put clear surgical tape on the earrings/jewelry where it touches your skin to protect it. I can only wear silver/gold and stainless steel daily.

When my skin gets really irritated, I find that calendula gel (you can find it in the health food store) is very cooling - also applications of cold black tea (very good around the eyes).

Try getting a shower water filter. Maybe you are allergic to chlorine and showeriing in chlorinated water maybe leaving your skin in a constantly agitated state. :)

A lot of this just depends on the individual. I've never been able to use Dove soaps- I think it's the rose oil. Jergens soap, and clear, perfume-free soaps like Neutragena work for me. Noxema is also good. I like the Almay products, including the milk cleanser.

If you have sensitive skin be careful which sunscreen you use. My face swelled up when I used Coppertone Faces Only- even though I was hardly in the sun. I've used Neutragena Sensitive Skin sunscreen every day for the past four years and haven't had any problem with it.

Try Carley's face products - particularly their natural soap which is ideal for those with sensitive skin. Most likely you guys are sensitive to the ingredients in most soaps. Carley's caters to those with allergies to store bought products as well as those with acne (for that - get the treatment). This stuff is unlike anything else you will have tried...
You can only purchase on the internet or ebay. Its fresh (no more than a couple months old) and its natural. Give it a try! You'll notice a difference right away..

Eurycin has just come out with a line of products for calming sensitive skin. So far I've used the face wash which works well.

Be careful which sunscreen you use, some can make your skin photosensitive. Neutregena sunscreen for sensitive skin is good.

Also, just because a product claims to be hypoallergenic doesn't mean you won't be allergic to it. It only means that some testing was done and certain ingredients known to be irritating have been omitted. I can't use anything Dove makes, baking soda or petroleum jelly, and they are all recommended for sensitive skin. You just have to go with what works for you.

I use Aveeno baby Daily moisture lotion on my face and neck and it keeps my skin feeling soft the whole day as well as keeping my skin blemish and redness free. It's Fragance free and has Natural Colloidal Oatmeal. It absorbs quickly so you don't feel it, only the smoothness throughout the day. Hypoallergenic and seriously if it's good enough for babies skin (pediatrician recommended) then it's good for adult skin. I've been using it for over 2 years and my skin has stayed smooth and blemish free and I used to have combination and pimpled skin.

You must really read the label of all your skin care products, any type of dyes, fragrances, chemicals etc can cause sensitive skin to burn and sting. I have testimonies of many people with extremely sensitive skin that have had success with products thru a very reputable company I am now working with. The company has been around since 1980. The products are formulated in Switzerland which has a higher standard than the US. They are botanical with NO chemicals, fragrances or dyes. No mineral oils or animal by-products. If you are interested in knowing more, please contact me by email. I don't wish to give out too much info on this site, but if you or anyone else reading wants to know more, I will be glad to send you free samples, etc.
Sincerely,
Jennifer

Try Burts Bees products. They are almost completely natural and they work wonders for me.. Especially the lotions. And they smell pretty good too. I've tried tons of different lotions and soaps and all of them made my skin sting and gave me razor bumps and blotchy skin, but Burts Bees keeps my skin incredibly smooth. One of them even has a shimmer too it and it really makes your skin glow. The body wash is amazing too!! :) They are kind of pricey but I reeally really think it's worth it.

Your shampoo could be irritating your face also.

I have extremely sensitive skin as well. After trying everything I finally found a dermatologist that performed testing on me for sensitivities to over 200 chemicals. It turned out that I have a chemical sensitivity to 3 of 200 items I was tested for. 1. Propylene Glycol 2. Gold 3. Benzolperoxide (excuse my spelling) I have the last one written down at home so probably didn't spell it correctly.

After receiving the test results the doctor gave me a computer generated printout that cross checks the chemicals in almost every product on the market. The list shows the products that I am ONLY allowed to use. I believe it's called a CARD list, I think it is managed by the Mayo Clinic. I reviewed the ingredients from the products I was using all along and most of them had Propylene Glycol in them. I had to get rid of all the shampoos, conditioners, lotions, creams, hair gels...etc. and replace them with allowed items from the list.

Prior to this I suffered for years with horribly sensitivities. Finally I found some relief. My doctor tested for 200 chemicals, but from what I understand there is another doctor in NYC that tests for in excess of 1000 chemicals. If you think about it, it totally makes sense. There is some chemical in our environment and most likely contained in the every day products we use. Just because a product says "natural" or "for sensitive skin" does not mean we will not react to it. Start reading the ingredients in your lotions, shampoos, conditioners,...etc They are loaded with chemicals.

I hope this helps someone....as I suffered a long time before getting the correct info.

I have very sensitive skin and am constantly looking for things that do not irritate my skin. I would like to ask Ruth (posting 1/13/09) what skin lotions she has found that work for her. Thanks!

I highly recommend the tri-derma products (especially the ones that say for redness - there is a cleanser and a lotion that is wonderful- they have been a life saver for me). I was diagnosed a few years ago with Rosacea but have always doubted if that truly "is what it is". I believe it is some type of allergy.

Either way, regardless to what label is put to my skin problem, the issue at hand has been finding products that will not irritate and flare up whatever it is that I have.

Also, I highly recommend Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser. But read this. If you do not try any other product that I recommend, please try 100% pure emu oil. You can get this at most health food stores or on-line.

My favorite brand (company) is Emu Essentials, 100% Pure Emu Oil. This stuff is all natural, won't clog pores, absorbs quickly and best part is... It works on any skin condition that involves inflammation (which most do). Do your own research on line about Emu Oil and problems with the skin. You may be shocked.
Hope this becomes a blessing to you.
Allie
