Gritty Substance Coming from Morphy Richards Aquamax Steam Iron?

There is a lot of a really sandy, gritty substance coming from my Morphy Richards Aquamax steam generated iron, but no one knows what it is. Sometimes it's the same colour as sand, but its started getting worse and it's gone a bit grey in colour. I was gonna buy a new anti scale cartridge for it, but am not sure if it's worth it. What is this substance coming from my iron and can I do anything to stop it?

Sounds like mineral deposits to me. Better get that new cartridge or perhaps use distilled water in the iron.

Ditto about what thriftmeg wrote but also always use distilled water from now on so you won't have to purchase another cartridge again.
