Decoration Ideas for a Kitchen?

I think I figured out what to do with my kitchen, good and bad feedback is greatly appreciated. I will have red appliances, black counter tops, marshmallow white cabinets, and warm gold walls (yellowish color). Then I'm going to draw poppies (red flower) above my sink and on my cabinets and paint them a red rose bouquet. I'm hoping it will turn out OK. Please tell me what you think of my idea, good or bad Thank you.

Decoration Ideas for a Kitchen

We just bought a house, but I'm having a bit of a problem with decorating the kitchen and dining hall which is adjacent to the kitchen. The kitchen and dining walls are cream. The kitchen comes with brown marble worktops, brown wooden cabinets, grey and black kitchen appliances, and brown floor tiles.

OK, that's enough brown for me! I'd paint the walls if I could, a very light off white. If painting was not in the picture or you think they're already light enough, I'd perk it up with splashes of red. I'd look for a red rug for the area in front of the sink. I'd put some pictures with lots of red around. I just think red is great in small splashes. I'd never paint a whole wall red, but in small spots it helps. (03/31/2010)

I think with all that neutral color you need something brighter on the walls or at the very least in your accessories. You could try red, although I think that is going out of style, but is not out yet. A green more to the olive side, but not too dark, might look good. I think you can use just about anything with your counter tops and floor being so neutral. (04/02/2010)

I think terracotta walls would look nice. Then use accents/pictures in terracotta and yellow shades. (04/02/2010)

Your kitchen color scheme is very similar to mine except that my appliances are white. All I did was paint the walls a creamy white then I just added splashes of red as in ornaments, pots and pans (Le Creuset), tablecloths/napkins/curtains and other stuff that sits on the kitchen counter. Mine are all red and creamy white. This way, if I get bored with red, all I have to do is change the accessories, ornaments, curtains and linen, and my kitchen has a brand new look! (04/02/2010)

Lighten your cupboard doors. A honey blonde or similar color would look nice. You could use the doors you have now. If you Googled how to do that, I am sure you could. If you have a bigger budget, a glass door scheme would be very lovely. Anything from clear class, to frosted, or beveled glass. You could also do a tile in the frames of the cupboard doors. Perhaps a floral or geometric design (but keep it simple, not cluttered or you'll make the cupboard doors look too busy and cluttered).

If you have a very generous budget, I'd change the appliances from stainless steel to white or beige.

These are my opinions, but I just think the cupboard doors and appliances make the whole kitchen look very dark. I hope you post a pic of what you do decide to do with the kitchen.

Good luck! (04/02/2010)

I would replace the cabinet doors like suggested before. Either replace them or if possible lighten up. Then I would find something really fun for the backsplash area, ceramic tiles or glass blocks. You know, to add lots of interest and design. Then if your budget allows I would replace the stainless. I'm not a fan of stainless, too cold. (04/03/2010)

Your kitchen has very similar color make up as mine. I think I would make the walls a little more creamy yellowy. Everybody likes yellow, right? I agree that red accents would be great. If you have a window, make sure it's uncovered except for maybe a valance so as much light as possible shines in. Depending on your design tastes you could use red canisters, dishes, fabric chair covers, framed art, rug, jars for utensils, and trays.

I even have a red berry wreath on my wall. It may sound like too much, but if you use different coordinating patterns in an intentional way, it will really look good. Be sure to post your results. (04/22/2010)
