Dieting for People Over 40?

Almost every magazine, newspaper, internet site, etc. has advice about dieting. Does anybody in their late 40's early 50's have any favorable reviews on any that are out there or have tried anything on their own that works?

My husband and I are in our mid-40's. I can't say "I'm dieting," but I have changed most of what we eat. My husband was told by the doctor that he has high blood pressure and needed to lose some weight.

So, instead of using eggs, use egg whites, cut the pork and beef in favor of chicken breast and ground turkey breast.

If I want meatloaf, I used a 1lb. of lean hamburger, added ground up veggies and oatmeal.

I feel you should really look at what you are eating and make changes from there. I read labels. Avoid high fats, sugars and salts--that mostly rules out prepackaged foods. Eat fresh fruits and veggies.

My sister-in-law does weight watchers...which is basically the same thing I'm doing. She too loses weight when she follows their program. Watching portions and make choices for healthier eating. You can avoid buying a book or joining a food program.

Consequently, we have lost weight. All the best!

We eat healthy, fresh veggies & fruits. I have a garden in our back yard. We also walk a mile every day if possible. Don't stuff your tummy, very few sweets. Good luck.

I am 68 and last year lost 38 lb by following an on line tracker. It was free and no longer available but there are others including, I think, weightwatchers. I had tried all sorts of diets but always got fed up of the food available and slipped back after a year.

Luckily, I kept a note of what I was eating and the points for each meal so I have had no trouble maintaining the weight loss. The beauty of a tracker is that you have a huge database of foods to choose from, giving you individual fat, carb etc. content. I found that some foods which I thought were healthy were, actually, quite high in calories or etc. Also, having to record each item makes a difference. It also meant I could have the odd fish and chips or curry, by careful planning of the rest of my meals. Good luck with your plan. I feel so much better now and actually enjoy shopping for clothes again!

I'm not quite 40 but in my early years i did all the diets and really nothing actually works until you change your lifestyle and eating habits. They have to be permanent changes, this does take time. I will say though (and my mom experienced this recently, she is 65), if you cut out ALL dairy for good, you'll be shocked how much weight you'll lose and how good you'll feel.

Seems extreme I know. My mom is lactose intolerant but still ate dairy most of her life anyway. She recently cut it out and she went from a size 10 to a size 6. Just like that. I experienced the same thing. Just an idea :) Good luck!

Go to mercola.com and put dieting in the searchbar. It has lots of wonderful info. Also eat protein with every carb you have. You will feel full longer.

I have turned meal planning on its head. It used to be a protien item like a chunk of cow, a starch item like french fries and a veggie as an afterthought. Now, it's two veggies, usually tossed in a sauce or marinade and roasted, and the protien is just a sliver for flavor. I keep sliced meats in the freezer and use just a little each meal. Now I can say "I LOVE VEGGIES!"

Also I get so much good support and help from TOPS, a weight-loss support group nationwide. It's very very very reasonably priced, and they don't tell you what diet to be on, saying that it's between you and your doctor. They want you there whether you're working on weight loss or just maintaining at this stage. It has helped me so much! Go to TOPS .org for cool before and after pix!

This is a link to the best BIBLE study on weight loss ever!! (free.) It does not say what to eat or not to eat. It is a fill in the blank study, each day for about a month I think. It is mercy based; no condemnation.

My doctor said to cut out all white carbs (white rice, white bread, white potatoes) and substitute brown rice, whole wheat or rye bread, and sweet potatoes.

Also limit fruits to 2 a day. Eat a lot of vegetables. No cookies, ice cream, cake, pie.

I lost 10 lbs in 4 months.

My name is Denise and I'm 41 and weight 300lbs. I've lost 35 lbs in the last 2 months using caleriecount online. it is an interactive website where you can put in what your eating now and if you exercise at all. I didn't when I started(age and injuries). It helps you lower your calorie intake to help you lose weight.

It also has a nutritionist and several other professionals on the site where you can ask questions etc. and a community to read or post where you can add buddies so your not doing it alone. If you choose to join repost here or email me warnerd5 AT aol.com We can be friends there as I cant lose weight without help. Ive done it for years on my own and my weight and health show me what that got me. Look forward to meeting you there. Best of luck d

I finally gave in and am now trying low carb dieting vs. low fat dieting (which only worked temporarily) I am 46 and this is finally working. I couldn't believe the amount of carbs I ate in a day until I started looking. An Atkin's diet allows about 20 carbs a day which is the equivalent of two slices of bread (even whole wheat) or a cup of yogurt! I am finding lots of things to still eat although I'm eating more like 80 carbs a day and I am still losing weight.

My parents have had success on the Flat Belly Diet. It is a yellow book and being sold at Wal-Mart. It was about $20. You have to be willing to spend money to eat the foods on the list. But four to five pounds in the first week is very good for a couple who are in their seventies>

This is an old post, but I will answer because dieting is a perennial interest to many. I have tried many diets and all have strengths and weaknesses. Nutrisystem is effective at taking off 10 pounds, but I eventually got tired of the food and I like to be more spontaneous in what I eat.

Exclusion diets, i.e., Dr. Gotts No Sugar No Flour diet or going vegan can also take off weight. They have the benefit as well of re-training your palate to healthy choices. The drawbacks are they are very difficult to stick to and eventually you learn ways to indulge that don't break the rules and you may gain the weight back.

Weight Watchers is great, but it requires dedicated record keeping. Most people tire of the if you bite it, write it, especially if they are away from home working or have to cook meals to please the family but that are hard to estimate calories for.

My choice is to take tips from various diets and my doctor and combine them in a way that works for me. I have go-to meals and snacks that I know are within my calorie range so I do not have to write them down. I research the menu before I go to a restaurant and already know what I will order before I arrive. I spend my calories wisely- thinking of them like money. Do I really want a piece of cake if it means I've used up my calories for the day?

I have found that almond butter on whole wheat melba toast is a treat that I like better than a donut. It won't leave me tired and down an hour or two later when my sugar crashes. BTW, I measure the almond butter. Memorize the calorie count if it is a favorite. Thirteen almonds equals 80 calories and so on.

I like Pei Wei, but they give me the food for two meals. I pack the second meal to go home with me before I eat. I buy a can of black beans, rinse them, then separate them into servings in small freezer bags. A lot of things, like oatmeal and brown rice, I buy as single servings. That way I am less likely to add that extra spoonful or two. I am always one cupcake way from a sugar binge, so when baked treats are offered, I just say I don't eat pastries.

If there is a covered dish dinner, I will bring a fruit salad or something else that if it isn't all eaten, I can enjoy the remainder in portions. Once I simply brought a big bowl of tasty organic apples! I want to feel my best, and keeping my weight down is key. People who care about me will want me to be healthy. Keep it simple. Now I enjoy a simple meal more because

I think about individual ingredients and seasoning and cooking methods to make them taste better. Steamable bags for fresh veggies are great. I put individual servings of broccoli in the bags, and grab them out of the fridge and pop them into the microwave as needed for meals through the week.
