Have you tried the spca? They would take him, but do you want to keep him? Try your church maybe someone would be willing to babysit until you are able to care for her/him again.
If you want to keep your dog, there are several groups that will assist you with vet costs when you have a financial hardship. Google "vet bill assistance" to locate them.
Also see if a vet will put you on a payment plan. Some vets will do it. Do whatever you can to save his life. Heartworm can be deadly & he is dependent on you to do what's best for him.
Just a note.. Not all free-cycle groups will allow you to advertise an animal. Check with list owner first.
This is a (long) lost of organizations that helps pet owners who has trouble with medical bills.
Contacting these organizations for help might get a grant for the medical services the pet needs.
