Recommendations for Mattresses?

I've had one bad experience after another with beds over the last 5 years. I'm tired of them bowing and I end up in a valley every morning with pain in my hips and legs. I've tried Simmons and Stearns & Foster. The best beds I sleep in are always in hotels.

I've got a Serta Vera Wang bed coming tomorrow and I've added a featherbed, a split foundation and the best down pillows and bed spread money can buy, all to help me get some sleep. If this don't work, I don't know what will. Can anyone comment as to the best beds they have found? Thanks in advance.

We looked at the mattress in the hotel when we were impressed by it - it was top of the line & seemed to have an extra layer of something like memory foam on top , plus another quilted layer. Since memory foam toppers are now available, I would recommend getting one & then putting something like a mattress pad on top (otherwise the plastic foam will cause you to sweat).

Also turn your mattress regularly, changing from one side to the other and flipping it over to even out the wear. An old-fashioned tip often ignored nowadays.

It seems we're replacing our mattresses too often, also. As pamphyila mentioned, we got a memory foam topper for our most recent mattress (less than a year old). I'd *like* to get a Tempurpedic someday, but they're more money than we want to spend right now. Have you checked out consumerreports.org? We did some reading up there before we made our last purchase. Best of luck!

I've found that in time the best bed sags a bit in the middle if it is bigger than a single, so I build a leg for the center. First I put 1/2 inch boards across under the box spring (3 works best) then add a leg under the middle one.

My current mattress sits on the waterbed pedestal which eliminates the need for a box spring; which would not go up my stairs anyway.

No help, but just a friendly warning ,if you start to get breathing problems, remember feather down always gets dust mites breeding in it, because it was once living cells, that's why its bad for asthma sufferers.

Sixteen years ago my husband and I bought a king size Select Comfort--the inflatable system where you can customize the level of firmness to exactly what is comfortable. The king size has two separate twin size "mattresses," so the two sides of the bed can be of differing firmness. I don't remember what it cost, but in the length of time we've had it we probably would have bought two mattresses by now.

A couple months ago one of the sides developed a bulge and had to be discarded. A replacement cost $200 and will probably last another 15 years or so. Given the longevity, this has turned out to be a cost effective and more comfortable alternative to a conventional mattress and box spring.

What about a sleep number, You change the feel of the bed, not you conforming to the bed.

I too have had my share of spending a fortune on different mattresses. I bought a Tempur-Pedic mattress back in January 2005. It is the best mattress I have ever bought.

It still looks like the day it was delivered. They are a little pricey but it is well worth every penny.

We just purchased a Serta memory foam type mattress that the store said was equivalent to a Tempu-pedic mattress. We had 3 levels of the serta mattress to try out & we chose the top of the line. We have been having aches, pains, hip pain, back pain with our old bed so we went shopping. It hasn't been delivered yet so we haven't slept on it as yet but will let you know how it works out when we do. It better!$

I always liked Beauty Rest & I also am in the market for a mattress so when my bedroom set gets here I can finally sleep in my master bedroom instead of the guest room.

My mother had back trouble for a lot of years so got a sheet of ply board cut to fit between the box springs & mattress to give it more support. She said it worked wonders. If you like just do the same but have the board (also) cut in 1/2 at an angle so part of the bed has the board underneath & the other side doesn't.Or cut length ways down the middle so it only effects one side. Not everyone would be happy with it.

We got an SAT bed about 3 years ago. We both love it. They are expensive, but they are great. Better than temperpedic and serta and number beds. You get a 90 day in home trial. I am going to miss my bed when I have to go take care of my sister for several months after her transplant. But it will be waiting for me at home! LOL.

Good Luck on the bed. www.satbed.com/index.php

We have an Airloom of Beverly Hills. The mattress is about 20 inches deep. Can get in and out of bed without moving the next person. Got mattress and everyone of the grandchildren want one.

I wouldn't be without my "Select Comfort" mattress. I have heard TOO much bad over the "Memory Foam". We have had the "Select Comfort" for years. So far back, that they didn't have "numbers". You Won't be Sorry!

We got a Tempur-Pedic mattress three years ago and love, love, love it! It is as good last night as the first night we tried it. I have a bad back and have never woken up sore since the day we got it. I can't say enough good about it. Expensive yes, but well worth the money spent.

The best mattress I ever had was solid latex foam rubber. It was perfectly comfortable and kept it's shape for many years. Now I have a good Stearns and Foster which is also very good, but I would rate the solid latex foam higher. Good luck. (Make sure that is latexfoam. They will try to sell you poly foam, memory foam, etc. which are nowhere near as good as genuine latex rubber foam).
