Sample Time at Warehouse Stores

Are you a member of B.J.'S, Costco or Sams Club? If so, try to do your shopping at about 11:30 AM. In the food section, they give out samples of all kinds of interesting new products.

This past week, I was offered and accepted pizza, fettucine alfredo with shrimp, buffalo wings, granola, gourmet coffee and cheesecake. It was enough of little "tapas" that I didn't need to have lunch when I returned home from shopping. And the best part was that while I was snacking, I was walking those big long aisles.

My husband and I always had our "Lunch Date's" at Sam's when he was still able to go with me. Now our daughter goes with me and we have our "Girl's lunch" at Sam's with all of the samples. One other tip - if by chance you get their as the host's are running out of samples, you often get large portions, just so they can get finished up quicker. When I was there at the beginning of the month I actually got a full size piece of pizza for a "sample".

Another nice thing at our local Costco is you can get a large hot dog and a beverage for $1.50. It's a really cheap lunch. In fact, I know people who drop by Costco during their lunch hour.

On weekdays around lunch, it's not as hard to park and get into Costco as it is on weekends and it only takes about 5 minutes to order and receive your hotdog.

I was one of those demo ladies for awhile. If you knew what goes on sometimes you probably wouldn't want the samples. People dipping their food in the community salsa instead of using the spoon available. Nasty, yes people did that and more. I shop the clubs but I never eat the samples. I hope you read the remainder of this post if you do decide to go for lunch at one of the clubs and remember to be polite and respectful.

Here were just a few of my pet peeves: Talking on cell while grunting and pointing at the food rather than asking. The job is to promote the product. It's rude to talk on the phone when someone is talking to you. Demanding for the sample to be served different. Complaining that the person before him/her got a bigger/better piece. It's ok to ask when it will be ready but don't get mad if it's gone again when you get back.

Those are samples not meals and we had a dollar limit. People putting their used trash like napkins, toothpicks, etc on my food cart. Putting the product in your cart with no intentions of buying just to get more samples then laying the frozen product down in the auto department. Some of us including myself were retired seniors working just to get out of the house but that is the only source of income for some.

What looks like an easy job is not easy. There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, cooking, cleaning, lifting pulling and then paperwork/record keeping. At the time I worked there we worked for Sams. Now they hire the work out. From what I see now there is not as much cooking but I did a lot of it. The work conditions may be different now but just saying it not's as easy as it looks and demo people sometimes get treated badly not only from people wanting samples but from Managers when food sales are down.
