I am embarrassed asking this at my age but I have never known this. What is the difference, other than color, in yellow and white onions? Does it make a difference in which one you use?

As far as I can tell, there is no difference other than the skin colors. I use which ever one is on sale or that looks the best.
And as far as your age, we all think you are 20, because we can't see you! ;o)
I think white onions are generally sweeter than yellow. That has been my experience. They don't seem to be as strong.
Yellow onions are sweet and white onions are tangy. There are some varieties of white onions that have a sweet flavor such as Vidalia but they are not as sweet as yellow and red onions are even sweeter than yellow onions. The difference of which onion to use will depend on your personal taste and balancing the ingredient flavors of the recipe but it won't ruin a recipe interchanging them.
Okay, and I can't help asking just how old are you? I'll be 57 in just a little over a week from now. :-)
Don't be embarrassed, Linda. Just last week my daughter & I were talking about a sweet onion she needed for a recipe. I am not going to reveal my young (wishful thinking) age, but I have been cooking for a long time & I did not know which one to buy! Do know some grocery stores identify sweet onions on labels.
