When you don't have a lot of space, try going up instead of around the room. A stacked washer and dryer is a good example. Floor to ceiling gives you lots of storage for anything. Try stacking pieces of furniture for more space.

I've seen some cool shelving in bathrooms that follows this concept. Look upward! Also, make sure you divide space horizontally and vertically in closets.

I've been using this idea for a long time. I have an old house with very high ceilings but smallish rooms so in the tiniest bedroom, I've actually mounted two closets on top of another two closets! I store out of season clothes and surplus linen and blankets in them. Very convenient! Just make sure that the top closets are securely attached to the bottom ones - mine are also attached to the walls, top and bottom.
Old fishermen's nets make cool-looking storage for a variety of items. Mount on strong s-hooks in corners. There are cabinets and desks designed to fit into corners, too.
