Try diluted hair conditioner, very diluted till you get the results you want.

Also, a good tip for tangled hair is to pull all of the wet hair up to the top of the head and start combing it down in small sections, starting at the nape of the neck.

I've used diluted fabric softener in a spritzer bottle and in the shower/sink - works like a charm and smells good too!
