Color Suggestions for Ceramic Tile?

My kitchen has beige ceramic tiles, oak wood cabinets, egg shell ceramic tile floors and a white Frig and Stove. We just moved with those appliances and would like to know what color could we change the tiles to enhance our new fridge and stove!

As I'm sure you already know, White, Beige, Wood Tones & Browns are Neutral colors which go with everything & add better re-sale to a house. The beige Tiles you have now ALREADY go with your White fridge & stove! I'd suggest you not change the actual tiles, but change the accent color in your kitchen. Do this by choosing any bright or bold color you really like & buy accessories like: a kitchen throw-rug, canisters, planters, knobs for your cupboards, matching pictures or just matting for the pictures along with matching colored napkins, place mats & maybe even dishes or planters or a floral arrangement for your table. These should all be of the same color. (or same 2 colors). Any color you like, with the exception of Yellow. If you do this you can change the color of your kitchen easily from year to year or whenever you get tired of the color & it won't cost you a fortune or be a big hassle but if you change the tile color, you'll be stuck with one color. (& mark my work when I say you'll be sick of whatever color you choose in about 5 years & will want to change it!)

---> If you don't want to just buy colorful matching accessories & STILL have your heart set on changing the actual Tiles, then I have several suggestions for you:

1) You could buy a neutral color of glass tiles with an aurora borealis finish, that's the finish that changes colors depending what you put in front of it or where you stand in the light.

2) You can take a hammer to one tile every 2 feet or so then change these boring tiles out with deco tiles that are fancier but of the same size, & these deco tiles can be changed again & again fairly easily. You do this by scraping off the grout around the tiles then hitting them with a hammer, then you remove any excess glue & re-glue & re-grout the deco tiles in to the holes here & there. Easy as pie!

3) You could use small tiles of 3 inches or smaller in many, many colors. - This would be bold & bright & you would be able to choose from any of these colors to decorate around in the future. This type of thing looks best in a more modern kitchen.

* If I can't talk you out of changing your actual tiles (& this is what I do for a living, I'm an artist who paints & fires custom tiles for installation the helps clients pick colors for their kitchen & baths) then I'll actually suggest a color for you. I think Green is best. - ANY green, Olive, Hunter or a darker Sage. - You could even choose Lime if you're daring! I like green because it's easy to decorate around. Almost everything has green in it. It's the color of nature. Flowers have green leaves & stems, trees, grass & many things are green. Plus green goes with MANY other colors like brown, Tan, Beige, Brown, Black, Red, Burgundy, Rose, Pink, Lavender, Violet, Purple, Orange, Peach, White, & also Blue if you also add a bit of yellow to the mix.

* Colors to avoid: Orange (to trendy) - Yellow (to light) - Black (to dark) - Lavender, Peach, Pink or Rose (to feminine) - Red (use only in moderation or it may drive you mad!) <*grin*> & If you choose Blue make sure it's not a light blue but a Medium to Dark Cobalt or a Royal color of Blue.

---> I hope I've helped or at least given you something to think about.

As the floor will be the largest surface area, it's colour will dictate the tone of the kitchen.

If you have no plans to sell your home in the next 5 years, I would suggest you purchase something you like very much, something where you can draw an accent colour from.

With White applicances and oak cupboards, a suggestion might be something that has a stone/natural slate appearance. Perhaps in darker rather than lighter intensity. This will not only make your appliances "pop", but it will also highlight the richness and quality of your oak cupboards.

Have fun, enjoy your new home and Good Luck.

Oh, just a tip; most flooring stores will loan you largish samples of their tiles/laminates/hardwood, so you can take them home and "try them out". Good Luck
