Use Your Bicycle For Everything

If you're tired of high gas prices and taking your car to the shop every time it breaks down Or you are tired of high insurance prices. Or if you are concerned about the Gulf Oil Spill and global warming. My solution is get a bicycle. Like anything else you purchase, do your research.

If you're looking for a standard they sell them at any big box store Wal-Mart, Miejer, Kmart, or Target every day. By standard I mean the road, mountain, and beach cruiser bikes you see on the streets.

If you are looking for comfort then recumbent bikes and trikes are the way to go. I own and ride an EZ 3 SX tricycle. Every time I let someone ride it around the parking lot or even just sit on it, they compliment me on how much more comfortable it is compared to a standard.

If you want to go camping with your bike, be it a standard or a recumbent, get a kid hauler. You can find them anywhere like the standard or the recumbent bikes. Put your camping gear in it and take off. You won't need the added worry of where to park your RV or travel trailer. You can just pull into a site and unload everything.

Ride safe! Wear a helmet, use turn signals, and a head light and tail light are almost a must for riding either on the road or the bike trail.

Wow Miss Joan, that's terrrific. Some 20 year olds couldn't do what you're doing. Congrats on your health and happiness. Sharon in Turkey

That's fabulous! My dad is also 70 and he's been working out for 30 years or more. Not in a 'going to the gym' way, just healthy exercising at home. One of his exercise aids is a broomstick with weights on the end!

It's very important to keep fit and healthy and he actually puts me to shame - as do you!
By the way, do you carry all that weight on your bicycle to make it harder to pedal?
Keep up the good work anyway, you are a credit to us all.

Joan, you are so blessed to be so healthy! I'm in my 50's, and I don't think I could do that! Of course, that's my fault, because I hate to exercise! Keep up the good work -- I wish I lived by you, I would (try to) ride with you!

YOU GO GIRL! What a impressive thing for me to tell others, thank you for sharing this. We live 3 miles away from a grocery store AND I just hate to get into the car unless it is necessary because of the price of gas, BUT this is one thing I can do to get myself out & back into shape with and I am only in my mid 50's!

Thanks for sharing & please be careful.

Nice article. Using a bike does help save money but the best part is the exercise. My bike is gone due to a flood, but eventually, I will get back to riding.

I used to use a Dahon bike-the fold-up kind so that I could bring it on the trains--a very cool way to travel to different places.

I just got a Dahon folding bike. I looked all around the town and the internet, and it's the perfect one. Not because it folds, not because it's lightweight, not because of the color. No, I got this bike because of the super-low step-through! I wear long skirts, and the Dahon Ciao P8 was the only one that had a chain guard and a step-through so low that it doesn't push my skirts up to my knees. I didn't even care that this bike could fold, or that it was the best bike out there for my size and other needs, but it is.

Now I expect to be losing quite a bit of weight, as I'll be going to the grocery store and back (about 5 miles round-trip) almost every day, rather than making one big trip weekly in my best friend's car. I'm also saving money on the gym membership I was going to get. Plus, I get to feel the freedom of the open road again, after a lifetime of feeling hemmed in by my own lack of transportation.

Far out Joan. Recently moved with folks, no car now. I'm thinking of 3-wheeler bike, is yours? Didn't realize you could tote 40 lbs+. And if you have cats, way cool. I had to leave my 15 year friend in a cat sanctuary. Keep on keeping on. Pamela AZ

Wow, good for you! We do try to ride bike as much as we can. Our 4 yr old outgrew our bike carrier but, we put him in it anyway when we are going on a longer ride. He is not very good on his bike yet so we do it and are careful. I love riding bike! My hubby use to be a cyclist and he wants to get back into it and I think I would love to do that with him/for him. Neat!

Chayil, you go girl! You can do it! It sounds like you have a good attitude and the smarts to go with it!

Be safe all!

It's nice to see recumbents becoming so popular. I started with the EZ1 and now ride an EZ Sports AX. My only wish is that more cities and drivers would become bicycle friendly. Attached is my bike with my best buddy, Raleigh (named after a brand of bike). He's an adult now and loves running alongside (and I now have fenders).

Well said! I know you, you must've used spell check. I'd ride, if hubby could and we had a tandem. I'm not safe on any bike, though. You get my thumbs up! :D
