Ingredients

  • 3 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • Advertisement

  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup nuts, chopped
  • 1 cup raisins, chopped
  • 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk

Directions

Sift flour, soda and spices together. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and sifted ingredients alternately with sour milk in small amounts. Add nuts and raisins and mix thoroughly. Drop from spoon onto greased baking sheet and bake in oven at 350 degrees F about 12 minutes or until brown. Makes 100.

This is a recipe my grandmother used to use but mine never come out like hers. Her's were hard mine come out like little cakes. Any suggestions I've added more flour and cut back on the milk. Not much luck.
