Is it safe to drink the water that you have boiled eggs in? If not, why not?

I cannot imagine that it is unsafe, any bacteria should have been killed, and I don't think there is anything in the shells of untreated eggs that could be rendered out and unhealthy; just not tasty. I always add salt or vinegar to the water, so that would make it no good to drink, but if you use plain water, I suspect it is fine. Probably has a good dose of calcium in it.

To save electricity I sometimes boil 3 of 4 washed chicken eggs at a time in with vegetables. I notice the water does smell, so I did wonder if perhaps the concentration (calcium?) might be too much when absorbed in the veg.

Might be coincidence, but on the last occasion I didn`t feel to well afterwards. Will stop doing it.

Yes, the egg water is loaded with calcium!!!

It is good to use as a base for gravies and soups - it adds depth of flavor and calcium at the same time as does water used for poaching eggs.

How long should I boil the water with the eggs in the water to make nice eggs and not over cook them ?

The only thing would be this, there are chemicals and other things in water. When the water is boiled the chemicals become concentrated and might not be healthy.

I am curious as to why you would want to drink it. If you just don't want to waste it, water your house plants with it.

Drink it for the calcium

Think about what you just said....boiling water does not make it unsafe!

The fact that the water is boiled does not make it worse (more concentrated with chemicals) than the water of a soup, does it? The main reason asking about drinking eggs boiled water is whether the calcium of the eggs absorbed in the water makes it more beneficial and nutricious, or the chemical form in which Calcium is, may be dangerous (i.e.

for our kidneys).

It is full of calcium from the shells. When used on houseplants, they thrive ! '''

It's not so much to do with wasting the water as wasting the energy to heat it up

Make tea.

This is the very reason if my plants do so well with the egg water it should be good for my nails and bones, I would think. Maybe not.

It absolutely is safe to drink the water.

The water will be very high in calcium which is not only great for us, but plants as well. Personally I'm fairly shocked and amused by the comments left here, chemicals in the water being unsafe after boiling it?

If this is gross consider this, food producers will add ground up egg shellsin to food to boost the calcium content, they just need to label it as calcium!

Eggs shells are mostly calcium and personally I find it more gross and disturbing that people waste resources like this and are perfectly fine with not knowing what they are actually eating or better yet paying for a calcium supplement.

Adding vinegar or salt to water will soften the shell, if you don't mind drinking vinegar it is very beneficial to cleansing the body, apple cider vinegar is tasty and nutritious. If you do use a lot of salt, more than a couple teaspoons, I wouldn't recommend it. And do not use on plants if you use vinegar or salt.

I was humored by the person that said boiling water would make the water more unsafe because of chemicals in the water lmao

Boiling water actually helps chlorine to evaporate, making the water better to drink.

Boiling water does not make it unsafe. You use boiling water for so many things you cook. But, it might not taste good.

But I don't think it would harm you. I do use salt before boiling eggs myself.

I wanted to know if it was safe to drink 'egg water' so that I can make a cup of tea with the boiling water after the eggs are cooked - I would do this for my elevenses break.

Reading the comments, I feel it is safe to drink as long as there are no additives to the water like salt or vinegar or anything else - unless its a teabag maybe - I will try that next time, then I will probably have lovely brown egg shells! - and stewed tea - lol. With a little thought, this could save a little energy.

FYI people, you drink it because you don't have a kettle and can't be bothered boiling another pot of water for your tea

i was always told when young (a long time ago) that cooking in water in which an egg has been boiled gave you warts. i did get lots of warts on my hands from milking cows, and taking advice from a farmer i put them in the blacksmith's water trough . they went. maybe they are all in the mind.

My ex-brother-in-law (for a reason) used the egg water in the kettle, which I thought a little psycho, and he has warts!

I use the water to make a batch of rice in the pressure cooker. We eat the eggs from within the shell. Rice with a boost of calcium and recycling the water and saving energy sound like win-win-win. Thanks all for the input

Not one person mentioned salmonella? What a world.

Thank you for mentioning salmonella. It sounds like boiling will kill any active bacteria but is not guaranteed to entirely eradicate it. Here is an article with more information:

www.nytimes.com/.../bending-the-rules-on-bacteria-and...

Salmonella is relatively uncommon with refrigerated and pasteurized eggs. If you have chickens, this is much more of a concern.

From what I read, it sounds like it would be fine to drink or use within a couple of hours or fine to reheat later. I would not recommend allowing it to get to room temperature and then drinking it the next day.

December 6, 20200 found this helpful

I am pretty sure that boiling the water for more than 3-5 minutes with the egg in it eliminates salmonella from the water. It may be on our hands (and we need to wash them carefully) taking the egg from the refrigerator, but not in the water after boiling the eggs in it for succicient time, which I assume that it is 3-5 minutes, but for hard eggs we are boiling them for more time, aren't we?.

Just use filtered water if you are worried about consuming harmful chemicals.

November 7, 20210 found this helpful

Yes! Thank you, Anonymous! The question in this thread wasn't if "boiling water makes it harmful." Please pay attention before criticizing. Their concern was about boiled water having higher concentrations of chemicals -- which is true. Water that is boiled will contain a greater concentration by volume. (If you boil 16oz of tap water down to 8oz, it will still have 16oz-worth of whatever was in the water.) But the correct answer is: the water will be fine, bc boiling water for the short time needed to harden eggs won't reduce the water volume very much. And if you're drinking your tap water throughout the day, you'll get twice the chemicals anyway if you have a second glass. But to eliminate all fears, like Anonymous said, boil the eggs in filtered water. (Not actually distilled water, bc that's nasty to drink...) --V
