Always rewind your VCR tapes. If you forget to rewind a video tape before storing, it may develop a permanent static line where the tape was stopped.

Also store your tapes on a shelf, up right like a book. When you stack them, one on top of another, the weight can cause stoppable places on the tape.
keep your tapes in a cool dry area. moisture and heat can cause mold to grow on tapes overtime
