I would like to know if you have to use Mog Pog or is there a way to decoupage cheaper just for practice?

A friend will be celebrating her birthday soon and I wanted to give her a pair of earrings but in an interesting way. So I decoupaged a frame, added the velvety paper and glued on a large chunk of cork, stuck the earrings into it and wah la! I placed the glass and paper from the frame behind the velvet paper so my friend will be able to use the frame as a frame later on.
I buy packages of metal fridge magnet frames at the euro shop and decoupage them. I cut out matching pictures from magazines to put into the frames to make them fancier. These make wonderful little gifts. I have also sold these at Xmas and Easter bazaars.
I like to decoupage plain wooden frames. Recently I had an idea to use the frame as part of the entire scene. This one turned out great and looks wonderful in my bright Greek kitchen.
Decoupage With Newspaper Clippings
I'm going to be decoupaging a cheap old table with newspaper clippings. I'm concerned that the reverse of each clipping might show through once I have decoupaged them to the table.
For decoupage, use a diluted solution of ordinary white glue to seal in the decorative paper you have applied to your object. It dries to a nice, shiny surface.
My son has a boy in his class that is moving and we want to give him a wooden toy box with photos for a going away gift. What do you suggest to use to put the photos onto the wood so they would be permanent and it would not hurt the pictures?
Inexpensive Substitute for Gesso
I would like to do some de'coupage. Gesso is really expensive. Does anyone have an inexpensive substitute?
I have been doing paper napkin crafts on glass for about 4 years off and on since A.C. Moore (a local craft store) came to Maine. I was just wondering what I could use other than using Mod Podge to put the nakins on the glass. Is there any other glue that you can put on glass? I tried Mod Podge glue but it leaves the paper bumpy and you can see the glue.
Lamps are so expensive now, so reinventing an old lamp with a new look saves a LOT of money.

I am embarking on a huge collage project, with hundreds of newspaper pictures. I have 3 questions. Is there a substance (like varnish or polyurethene) that I can use instead of decoupage medium. For the size of my project I would spend a fortune on mod podge, and am looking for an alternative.
