Ripening an Avocado

July 31, 2011

A ripe avocado cut in half.Never buy an avocado that rattles. One that does is already overripe.

There are 2 ways to ripen an avocado. You can sit it on your windowsill for a few days until it is ripened. Or the best way is to place them in a brown paper bag and keep them at room temperature. This way will take anywhere between 3 and 6 days, depending on the ripeness when you bought them.

If you need to speed up the process, just pop a banana, apple or tomato in the bag as well. Once ripe, it will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Never refrigerate unripe avocado. They will not ripen in the cold.

Put them in a paper bag with an apple for a day or two. The gas that the apple produces cause the avocado, etc. to ripen more quickly.

Check the paper bag each day, and you will undoubtedly find that things ripen twice as fast as they would if you merely left them out.
