My Orphaned Garden Friend
The woman who wrote this article is a woman after my own heart. God bless her for her kindness. Her trespassing neighbor is a pitiful person. I hope shes able to keep him away from her garden!

Crepe Myrtle Sending Out New Growth on Trunk?
Youve done irreparable damage to the tree by topping it. It will never be the same. You can let the suckers continue to grow and have a large bush. Or, you can remove the tree and plant another. Decide how high you want the tree to be and buy one that will...

Pruning a Crepe Myrtle Tree?
There is no best time. If you top it then youll have sucker growth from below, and for every sturdy limb you cut back youll have three or more weak whips sprout. If its crooked maybe you need to remove a limb or two back to the trunk.

That would depend on what kind of straw youre using and what kind of plants youre going to put in. Pine straw (needles) are acidic. The straw thats left over from cutting hay is full of seeds. Also, as the straw breaks down the level of your soil will drop...

DONT PRUNE THEM! Peeling bark is a normal function of a crepe myrtle and some other trees and shrubs. It will be fine.

Pruning a Crepe Myrtle?
Yes, they are the buds. When the buds have finished blooming most of them will fall off. You can cut the dead buds off but it isnt necessary.

War on Slugs
That sounds like it would work but recently, at a garden club meeting, our speaker, a retired County Extension Agent, said to put squares of cardboard down in the slug infested areas at night and in the morning, when the sun gets warm, the slugs will be staying...

Reducing the Blooms on a Crepe Myrtle?
I suppose that might work but how can you get to them? If you remove only the flower buds that should be fine. They are very messy trees dropping spent blossoms, seed pods, peeling bark, and leaves in the fall. But theyre some of the most beautiful trees as...

Getting Rid of Poison Ivy and Oak Safely?
Im very allergic and have also had problems in the past. A garden friend taught me to take a plastic grocery bag, and pull the plant out using the bag as a glove. I then turn the bag inside out with the poison ivy, root and all, inside. Tie it shut and put...

Leaves of the plant.

What is This Plant? (Chinese Evergreen)
I inherited the same plant from my late mother. It appears to be one of the many varieties of spathiphyllum. The common Peace Lily is the most well known. This one differs in that the thick, segmented stems root very easily, and the white flower is smaller...

Growing Ginger Plants?
I live in zone 7B-8A and many gingers will overwinter in the ground here. There are some that are more tropical. But, as far as I know they all need filtered light, and lots of humidity. In your climate I would put the pot in a large saucer filled with pebbles...

Elegant Stinkhorn Mushroom
I live in east central Georgia and we have these smelly things pop up all around and under our grandchildrens swing set of all places! I shovel them out and toss into the woods but they come back. My husband read that they arent harmful in any way, just ugly...

Shipping Tape To Deter Ants
This may seem like a good idea but here in Georgia, and many other places in the south, we have lots of little lizards and frogs. Several years ago I tried yellow sticky pads for white flies with horrible results. It didnt take me long to vow never to use it...

I can sure relate to that topic! Several years ago I pulled out a large patch of Hellebore seedlings before I realized that they didnt look like weeds. They didnt look like Hellebores either, but fortunately I left the rest alone and now I warn others.

Pruning a Crepe Myrtle Tree?

Gardening Pruning Primer: What and...
I may have missed this but all spring flowering trees, as well as shrubs (which were mentioned) should be pruned right after the flowers fade or not at all. This includes Azaleas, Camellias, and others. Something that drives me crazy is crepe murder. Its utter...
