The most important thing to remember when giving a gift is the most thoughtful gifts are always the most moving. Try to get something meaningful and useful that shows you care and know the person well.
Crafts
Make something! If you are not a crafty person check a book out from the library and learn how to make something, it will be even more surprising.
Food
Do you have some jars of homemade jam in the pantry? Just cover with a piece of fabric and tie a ribbon around the jar or make a nice gift bag or basket. Soup and cookie mixes are great as well. Or bake the person their favorite cookies or baked goods.
Something that is needed
If you do want to spend a little money on a gift make sure it is needed. Keep your ears open, if you hear complaints like, "My purse is falling apart" or "I wish I had a garlic press" be sure get them that rather than something frivilous and expensive.
Pictures
Put together a small photo album of memories or design a card on your computer with an old picture. You can also attach a picture to a card using some adhesive corners that don't damage the picture. It's much more personal and impressive than a store bought card.
Your Time
Plan a day or night on the town. It doesn't need to be expensive, plan trip to the museum or have a picnic at the park.
Hey kids!
Give your parents a coupon book. Not the kind you buy for 20 bucks, make one yourself. Just use your computer, or you best penmanship, and make coupons good for services provided by you. Like coupons for doing the dishes, making a home cooked dinner, mowing the lawn, cleaning the bathroom or kitchen, vacuuming the house, etc... This is a great gift for kids to give to there overworked parents.
Stay Alert
Carry a list! The key to saving money is being prepared. Carry a list of all the people and gifts you need to buy throughout the year. That way if you come across a sale or a great garage sale you can fill some gift needs for the future.
