You should go to the Allegany National Forest in upper Pennsylvania.

If you are from the U.S. and are looking for an inexpensive vacation, Canada is the place. I recently traveled to Saskatoon, SK, and Calgary AB. I found hotels reasonably priced even before the exchange rate. A very nice hotel with a garden side pool, two restaurants, a workout center and large, well appointed rooms was $60 Canadian. at .69 US, that was less than $42 per night. Of course the exchange rate applies to all purchases including meals. Also, as a visitor from another country, you qualify for a refund of many of the goods and services taxes you pay on your purchases.

Camping, camping, camping! We have LOTS of great state-operated campgrounds in New York that cost about $15. per night. (Look for tents at garage sales; my brother in law sold two tents for $75. last year - they were in great shape and he paid over $400. for the two of them!). In July and August, (weekends only) check out the Renaissance Festival north of Syracuse. Adult tickets are about $14.00 per day, (children are less), though many credit unions, banks, grocery stores, employers, etc. offer discount vouchers. Your older kids will LOVE the costumes, plays, impromptu skits, and jousting, and - let's face it - the youngest one won't care what you do on your vacation.

Check out Hamlin Beach State Park - playgrounds and a supervised beach - or Green Lakes, where you can swim, fish, rent paddle boats, etc. As a bonus, if you camp at one park, admission to any other state park is free for any day for which you've paid a camping or admission fee. What this means is, if you camp at Hamlin but want to drive to Golden State Park and check out the lighthouse, you don't pay to get in to Golden. Most state parks offer shower and toilet facilities, and many have cabin camping for the less adventurous.

Kids love to camp, and you'll be surprised how relaxing you find it to be, too!

If you like to camp at all and/or be outdoors I highly recommend Acadia National Park in Maine. It has a gorgeous shore line, great easy hikes, and fun sight-seeing/shopping in Bar Harbor. If you don't like to camp, try to stay in Bar Harbor. I wish we were closer so we could go back with the kids (4 and 6).
