Here's a few ideas for making homemade wrapping paper and gift tags. I like to try to re-use stuff from around the house whenever possible, so this falls in line with that philosophy... as well as being cost-effective.

With the holidays coming up, why spend all that money on new gift wrap? The color comics make nifty wrapping paper for gifts. In addition, cover a plain index card with comics glued on the lined side of the index card, fold in half, and you have a gift card for the package, too. Punch a hole in the top part of the card, thread some yarn or ribbon thru it, and attach to the gift.

Also, colorful glossy pages from calendars, large color magazines or catalogs, and old posters make nice gift wrapping paper as well. For instance, if you use pictures of flowers to wrap the gift (and flower catalogs are a great source for this!), perhaps hotglue some silk or dried flowers (or even a tissue paper one you make yourself!) on top of the gift. Glue a cut-out of just one flower to a piece of construction paper, punch a hole in the top, thread a ribbon thru it, and you have a gift tag.

I also like to use the plain brown paper that my son's daily newspapers come in, and the "cover" paper that reams of copy paper come in, turned inside out. I stamp designs on them with my rubber stamps to make nice wrapping paper. You could also paint the paper or have the kids draw their own designs with crayons and markers. My friend's family did this for years and it was lots of fun for them to create the drawings and murals and many pictures on each gift. This "technique" works well with any plain newsprint-type paper that you have room to draw on -- you can even use the stuff that is stuffed inside purses when you buy them.

For an even simpler look, just wrap the gift in the (re-used) brown newsprint, and hotglue a small DRIED pinecone (one you picked up from Mother Nature for free) on top with a raffia bow or a ribbon. You can also paint dried pinecones with a bit of gold or silver spray paint if you have it, or roll them in glue and then glitter, for a fancier look. Simple but pretty.

I'm always looking for ways to re-use stuff! Hope this is of interest to others.

This is something that I do each Christmas and it is simple. I take the cards that was sent to me and cut out the "best parts" leaving a little tag end at the top or side. Next year these are my special gift tags. I tape the tag end to the present and then can fold over the pretty picture to write the names on it. These saves me lots of money and I feel better about the cards not going to waste. Also you can punch a whole in the top and tie on to a reused decorated bag for a quick and easy wrap job.
