I work a lot of home shows and trade shows and one thing I have seen over and over lately and heard great things from their customers is Scum Off shower cleaner. I saw this guys demo on a glass shower door and couldn't believe how easy it cleaned it. I didn't believe it at first until people that bought it the first day came back raving days later. One lady in the booth next to him said she hadn't been able to clean her fiberglass shower for years and the Scum Off took it right off. I tried it on my tile shower and it really did work. Best of all it is completely eco safe. It cost like $10 a bottle, but it dilutes down to $0.20 cents a quart to make a daily shower spray and glass cleaner. You can get it at www.scumoff.com its completely guaranteed too.

Does anyone have any suggestions for cleaning off the side of the tub after remove a "glass door" track that has been there FOREVER? It looks pretty bad. I don't want to have to buy a whole track and door set.

What is the name of the fume free oven cleaner? Also, does Kaboom actually work on fiberglass & glass shower doors? The sliding door trim is gold coated over aluminum. I'm concerned the Kaboom may affect the metal trim. I see Kaboom advertized frequently. Thanks.

I just tried this with the worst gunck on my friend's shower. He is super allergic to any type of smell so I opted not to use any of the oven cleaner and it was fine without it! I screamed for him to come in and see me do it. Thanks OP

I just tryed the oven cleaner in my 24yr. old fiberglass shower & tub. To my surprise it really worked. I have tryed everything. A lot of things would work but took a lot of elbow grease. This was the fastest and cleanest my shower has ever been. THANK YOU for the tip. Now I can us the boat wax. I have tryed the boat wax before It does work, only problem is that when the shower needs to be cleaned again you have to scrub off the old wax again.

I have well water that is rich in iron & sulfur, and the water has stained the entire tub with a black colour. I've tried MANY things to remove this colour, but to no avail. I don't want to replace the tub, but does anyone have anything that will work on removing iron & sulfur stains from a fiberglass tub?

I don't know why this works, but I wet the tub and rub Irish Spring soap over it, let it soak and then use a brush to wash it off. I started this when I noticed a clean streak from the soap dripping into the tub. What I like is no fumes.

Once you get it clean you can keep it clean with a good quality car / boat wash. I use Turtle wax zip wash, but any that is designed for Fiberglass boat or Vipers and Corvettes will work.

Will using oven cleaner on fiberglass showers hurt the shower drain, faucets, or the chrome around the shower door?

I used Lindsay's advice posted 10/25/2006 with the fume free oven cleaner and the Mr. Clean eraser pads and I can't beleieve it's the same shower base. I bought both Mr. Clean eraser pads and the original eraser pads lasted longer than the supposed new and improved. It didn't get out the hair dye color but everything else is pretty perfect. My husband is a clean freak and was totally impressed. If anyone knows the trick to getting out the hair dye please let me know. Right now I am trying paper towels drenched in isopropyl alcohol on the stain. Wish me luck!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions!!! The oven cleaner followed by Mr Clean Magic Eraser worked on the worst soap scum ever!

I tried everything with no success until I tried Borax. Just dampen a plastic scrubber or scrubbing sponge of any kind and dip into Borax. Even the worst soap scum if easily removed!

I am trying to find a way to clean hard water from my fiberglass

By Hickory

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

Kaboom is awesome I ave been cleaning house and apartments for the last 25 years This is one of the best cleaning agents out there! It will not eat away the metal on anything you use it on Its safe to use on kitchen faucets and shower heads with plastic too (01/04/2007)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

I had heard about using the fume free oven cleaner on tubs but I didn't think it meant on fiberglass tubs so I was always too chicken to actually try it. Has anyone actually done this? I'd sure like to know. I usually use Scrubbing Bubbles. Just spray it on and let it work while you clean up the rest of the countertops, sinks, etc. Then I take the Mr. Clean Magic Reach scrubber to it, rinse and it comes out pretty clean and shiny. The scrubber works pretty well on its own, but with the Scrubbing Bubbles it is a bit less elbow grease. (01/10/2007)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

Thanks to the person who suggested using Mr Clean Magic Eraser. I tried all the other suggestions and this is the only one that worked. I most have tried 10-15 different cleaners and none worked. I even tried Fume Free Oven Cleaners. It worked OK but nothing like the Magic Eraser. Thanks again, you just saved me $150 because I was ready to replace the shower box. (02/21/2007)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

I've used ELIMINATE Advanced Surface Care Shower Tub & Tile Cleaner for at least 10 yrs. Wonderful stuff. The container says it's biodegradable, & for some reason I thought it wouldn't hurt to breath the fumes? But I don't see that on the bottle. Anyway just spray it on, let it penetrate for 15 min then use the hot water out of my removable shower head to wash it down, and it worked really great, I did have to scrub sometimes. Unable to find it at the home supply store lately, I ran the web site at www.unelko.com & I guess I can order it online, they also have other cleaning solutions on this site. (03/03/2007)

RE: Fume free oven cleaner on fiberglass tub

I have a follow up question for those who have used fume-free oven cleaner to clean fiberglass tubs. How does the oven cleaner affect the finish on your tub's metal parts? I have a large fiberglass jacuzzi with stainless steel and chrome jets that I fear will be damaged by the oven cleaner. Any experience? Thank you. (03/20/2007)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

Thanks for all the info. I just had a fiberglass shower pan installed with a chrome drain. I was worried the caustic cleaners would mar the finish. Looks like Kaboom or fume free oven cleaner is a good choice. (03/25/2007)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

I just found the solution. It's Soft Scrub Deep Clean Foaming Cleanser with a Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scour Pad (The kind without the sponge on the back). Foam it on and let it sit only 2 minutes and scour it off. Very little "elbow grease" is needed. Never simpler! Then I put on a really good car wax, except on the bottom of the tub (I use Stop Wax) and you are good to go! (06/18/2007)

ELIMINATE Advanced Surface Care Shower Tub & Tile Cleaner - I can't find this product anywhere on the net - where do you purchase it? (11/06/2007)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

The best product I've used to date is Soft Scrub. Works great with a small amount of elbow grease. Rinses off easily with water. (11/16/2007)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

My ivory fiberglass tub is discoloring to a yellow on the bottom four inches. We are on well water and it is very hard and sulfur smelling. I can't even get the hard water marks off the ring where the water sits in the toilet. I can not get the works product it must be from the USA. Any other suggestions? thanks (12/17/2007)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

To remove body oils and soap scum, use Dawn Dish Soap. As the commercials shows they use it to remove oil from birds caught in oil slicks, well it works great in the bathtub and shower. If you really have a BAD build up, use Dawn and Magic Eraser. I once cleaned a tub in a rental house and thought that there was NO HOPE of getting the tub clean, but Dawn and Magic Eraser did the trick. (01/18/2008)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

WARNING about The Works (either one). I used The Works on my old white laminate counter top and a newer fiberglass tub surround. I have hard water & The Works really got it looking clean and new. However, after a about a year or two the cleaner had removed all of the protective coating on both surfaces. In the end, even shampoo would stain my tub. Everything was absorbed into the surfaces after using The Works for a while and it ended up worse. I only recommend using The Works if you're going to replace a surface in a year. The Works is GREAT ON TILE AND CERAMIC surfaces! Not good for laminates or fiberglass finishes though. (03/18/2008)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

I like CLR for my bathtub but it is metal. I have a fiberglass surround and just recently found a cleaner that is working well for me. It is called KABOOM I purchased this at Walmart for about $3. (03/06/2006)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

I have tried many of these products and they all are good, but they cost money. I have found that for my shower and tub both which are fiberglass, I use cheap hair shampoo. I get a lot of it from my son who travels a lot in his job and he brings me the hotel bottles once or twice a year. I use the plain hair shampoo and a "net" scrubber I made out of onion and potato bags. This cleans very well. Sometimes I fill my tub up w/water and then after I have cleaned the sides of the tub or shower I take my string mop and swish it around in the water and mop the tile floors w/the solution that I just cleaned the tub with. This saves me time and money! I use plain old vinegar and water sprayed on the chrome faucets to clean them and they shine right up. I also use the hair shampoo in my toilet and then use an old fashion toilet brush to finish the job. This is a lot cheaper than anything else I have found and just as good if not better. Hope this helps someone save money and time! (03/06/2006)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

Well water here is heavily with minerals along w/much iron and silt. It cakes on quickly and discolors everything it touches from orange to black. I'd despaired of ever returning the appliances to all-white. As a last resort, when The Works for cleaning tubs wasn't strong enough for my need, The Works disinfectant toilet bowl cleaner was tried. Rather than ruin the tub, as I'd feared, it actually took away some layers of muck! It took several re-applications to get rid of most stains. You can leave it on for hours w/o marring the finish. Of course, it does wonders for the commode. (03/06/2006)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

The best way to prevent the build up of soap film and other build ups is to simply wipe down the shower from the top to the bottom with a towel after each use. This will take off all the soap film and water. Then you will never have to scrub the shower or tub again to remove the soap film. However,if there is a coating of soap film I suggest you buy a non scratch scrubbing pad from 3M and other companies available at your local super market and scrub with any soap product. RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

Amen to the "WORKS" toilet bowl cleaner. We also have well water and this stuff works like a charm. I was also afraid it would ruin the finish but the tub was starting to look so bad that it couldn't make it look any worse, so I tried it and it did a beautiful job with no damage to the finish. The iron stains just disappear right in front of your eyes. It was unbelievable. I use it all the time. It does have an awful odor to it but I can live with that. And the best thing is I got it at the dollar store for $1.00. (03/10/2006)

The Works toilet bowl cleaner will ruin Chrome ...

I changed the subject title on my post so you would notice. After exhausting ALL means of cleaning a friends tub, I too tried Snow Bowl toilet bowl cleaner. It RUINED the chrome on the tub drain!

It made the chrome bubble and peel. So unless you want to replace that I would not recommend using it on the tub. It does help on enamel. DON'T use it on refinished tubs, ones that have the enamel replaced or recovered (sorry I forget the proper term).

This post brought back a bad memory, so I had to post my experience. (03/10/2006)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

If you use body soap instead of bar soap cleaning the tub is a breeze. it is the wax in the bar soap that leaves soap scum. So it only makes sense to do away with the wax and use the liquid or body soap. (04/26/2006)

RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

Thanks everybody for giving me ideas for excellent fiberglass cleaners (these should work well on my hot tub, too).

Just a quick note after reading all these entries: soap scum is a mix of body oils, dirt, and the fatty salts that are formed when the calcium, magnesium, and iron in your water react with your soap. Some bar "soaps" are really bar "detergents" (slightly chemically different from soaps) and don't cause as much buildup as real soaps. And soaps need not contain talc to cause soap scum. RE: Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs and Showers

My husband and I used to manage apartment complexes and had to clean several filthy bathrooms after tenants would move. After speaking with a fiberglass shower distributor we found out that they always recommend fume-free oven cleaner to clean fiberglass showers. (Be careful if you don't use the fume free) Simply spray it on, let it sit for about 20-30 minutes and then wipe it off, and rinse. On really bad areas you may have to do a little more scrubbing. I also found that for the bottom of the tubs where the fiberglass is textured, the Mr. Clean eraser pads with the scrubby side work perfectly. The showers in the apartments have been there for 15 years and after my husband and I would clean them our managing agents would evaluate the apartments. They told us they have never seen a cleaner shower/tub than they had after we finished cleaning!

Seriously... Mr. Clean Eraser Pads and Fume Free Oven cleaner are the best. Heavily recommended by experienced users and professionals! (10/25/2006)
