Tips

Camping Cooking Tips

Tips for cooking when camping.

  • Apply cooking oil to your camp grill to help prevent food from sticking to it.

  • If you are cooking it in a pot, make sure to put the lid on it.

  • The food will cook faster and it will help keep dirt and insects out of your meal.

  • Use aluminum foil to cook items like potatoes and other vegetables on the grill. Just wrap them up with a little butter and cook until done.

Post your tips below.

Make a Master List for Camping

This tip is for your new recreation section. On one of our camping trips, I took the time to write down everything we had brought with us, tips about how we had packed that had worked or had not worked, and items we forgot. When we got home I saved this master list, divided into categories of where that item is typically kept at home: garage, storage building, kitchen, etc.

Now when we are going to go camping, I just print our list and check off as we gather items from each area - no more running around from place to place as things come to my mind! I also bring the paper copy that we packed from with us, making note of any additions or deletions so I can update my master list when I get home.

Camping and Hiking Safety Tips
By Brandi M. Seals

Camping and hiking can be a great adventure for young and old. Watch the trees sway in the wind, a bird fly across the sky or simply sit back and relax. The possibilities can be endless, but only if precautions are taken to avoid simple mistakes that could end the adventure prematurely.

Burgers for Camping

When camping I always put my ground beef into a one quart ziploc bag and press flat before we go. When we're ready to cook burgers I just score the bag with the spatula, cut the bag open and I have patties all made up. Sometimes you have to push the sides in so they'll hold together, but it sure saves your hands from getting greasy.

Homemade Camping Picnic Table

We found a pattern for a picnic table constructed from 1 piece of 3/4 inch plywood. It will seat 4-6 people and is small enough to fit in the back of a SUV. It is constructed with removable screws and is disassembled for storage.

I painted the table green and "stenciled" leaves onto the top, benches and sides. I collected different sizes of leaves (fern, oak, sweet gum, etc.). The leaves were laid on the surface and spray paint was applied; the leaves were gently removed; we used a brown tone paint and a hunter green. A large fern leaf was "stenciled" on the top of the table in the middle with English ivy leaves "stenciled on the corners of the table

We made another table a few years ago and it is very handy for camping, picnics or other functions. I will post a picture of that at a later date.

We are going on a camping vacation at the end of the week (6/23) and will have two camping picnic tables to use plus a metal camp table.

Egg Sandwiches When Camping

Use canning rings to make round egg patties for egg sandwiches. Just put a canning jar ring on your skillet, add the egg contents inside the ring and cook until the egg has solidified. Apply a little cooking oil to the ring to prevent sticking. Eggs will fit perfectly in between small hamburger buns, bagels, or English muffins.

Washing Hands at the Campsite

Here's a tip for washing your hands at a campsite when there is no faucet. Hang a one gallon milk jug to a low sturdy limb and make a hole in the bottom and plug the hole with a golf tee or a cork. Then fill the jug with water. Wash hands by removing the plug. Hang a nylon with a bar of soap in it right next to the jug.

Adapting a BBQ Rib Recipe for Chicken

I have a recipe that says to cook ribs in 2 bottles of barbecue sauce and then cover the ribs the rest of the way with water and bring to a boil, then simmer till done. Then put the ribs on the outdoor gas grill and turn and baste for 20 minutes till brown. I did this and it was delicious. I wonder if chicken could be cooked the same way?
I appreciate all replies.

Thanks
P.J. from Delaware

Cooler Tips

  • If you are bringing meat in a cooler that will not be cooked soon, freeze it before putting it in the cooler. Cans of concentrated juice can be brought along to help keep items cool as well, just be sure to put each can in its own ziplock bag in case it leaks.

  • Soup and chili can also be made and frozen ahead of time and placed in ziplock bags in the cooler.

  • Bringing a separate cooler just for beverages will help keep your other food cool. That way people can open and close to the cooler for beverages without letting cold air out of your cooler with meat and other perishables.

  • Also, save space by freezing some water bottles. You will have some fresh water and not have to pack as much ice.

Bring Baking Soda on Camping Trips

Take a box of baking soda with you on a canoe trip/camping. You can use it to clean your hair, as under arm deodorant, to brush your teeth, rinse your mouth or as a soap in the shower. You can also sprinkle it in your shoes at night or in your damp suitcase.

Bringing Electronic Devices When Camping

If you are bringing electronic devices or flashlights, remove the batteries before packing and store them in a ziplock bag. That way if something accidentally gets flipped on, you won't run down your batteries.

Taking Foods to Picnics

When I take brownies or cookies to a picnic, I put several paper plates together and wrap them in foil, then I put the goodies on top. At cleanup time, I don't have to worry about transporting a dish home, and it is easy enough to take apart if someone else wants to take something messy, and needs a extra plate and some foil to cover it.

Baby Wipe Clean Up When Camping

After a day of camping, spraying bug spray, and using sunscreen give your self a quick bath using baby wipes before you hop into your sleeping bag. Save the baby wipes and they can be used to wipe up the tent floor before you pack it away.

Editor's Note: If your skin tends to dry out, you may want to follow this tip with some moisturizer.

It is important to always be prepared for the unexpected. With camping that could mean anything from bad weather to a severe accident. That is why it is important to always be prepared. Take along a first aid kit and be prepared to use it should anything happen.

Camping Food Safety
By Brandi M. Seals

There are a few basic cardinal rules when it comes to food safety - especially when conditions are not ideal -such as while camping, hiking, boating, or even tailgaiting. These rules will keep you and your family on the right track and help avoid a trip to the emergency room for food poisoning.

Keeping Ants Off Your Picnic Table

Ants can totally over take when food is eaten outside. Whether it be my dogs dish or my picnic table, I have found a way to stop them in their tracks

First make sure not one single blade of grass touches the legs of your picnic table, or a small low to the ground dog/cat food table. I have place old carpet under the dog food table. Then place each leg into a coffee can, put oil some the can (any oil should work).

The ants have to walk up the outside, then down the inside of the can, but can't swim through the oil.

By Cat Webber

To keep ants away from your plate on a picnic draw a circle around your plate with chalk. For some reason ants will not cross it.

Food for the Family Camping Trip
By Marcia Adair

No camping trip is complete without an old, green Coleman stove. This propane-powered stove has kept generations of campers well fed in the most adverse weather conditions. Because they are so common and virtually indestructible, it should be quite easy to find a used one in a second hand shop or the classified section of your local paper.

Storing Camping Coolers

Before storing your coolers between camping trips, wash, dry completely and fill with crumpled newspapers. This will eliminate musty odors and mildew. It also works for your camper refrigerators and iceboxes.
