Craft Project: Cabbage Patch Sweater

This can be made for a Cabbage Patch Doll, or a newborn baby. It is a ripple style sweater, very quick to make. It is short sleeved. And great over a long sleeved shirt.

Recycled Frames And Shadowboxes From Cardboard

I urge you to check out the frames and shadow boxes I uploaded onto my Picasa account. I made them by laminating strips of cardboard packaging using a non-toxic, low-odour craft glue. They're surprisingly strong and durable yet lighter than wooden frames. I'm submitting the instructions for them in a future project, so keep your eyes peeled!

Ludwig (Boxer)

Ludwig is a 1 1/2 year old Boxer. We purchased from a private breeder. We selected him at 3 weeks old and visited him weekly until he was old enough to come home.

He likes to chase the kitties, play with the kids, and run around the house with any of his vast collection of toys. Ludwig is a complete clown and as you can see by the picture, it seems to come naturally to him. Although he is not very good at 'Come' he does manage to sit and stay for a few brief seconds. According to the breeder and our Boxer books, he should settle down eventually. But we do love him the way he is!

ThriftyFun's Office Primroses

These are primroses that we have to add some color to our office house porch. There were flats of them available on sale one day with all of the different colors. I planted them into a long rectangular pot and set one on either side of the porch. They are still blooming and they've been there since late February.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Deep Condition Your Hair While At The Beach

To have beautiful and undamaged hair this summer, simply comb through a high quality "leave in" conditioner or "hot oil" treatment when you get to the beach and the sun will "bake" the conditioner into your hair! You can either leave your head bare and it will look like you've been swimming and have wet hair or you can put a towel or a plastic shower-cap over your hair and this will help hold in the heat for a super-condition. Many conditioners also have an added sunscreen for added protection. When you're ready to go home, simply shower the conditioner off and you'll have beautifully conditioned, soft and shiny hair!

Make Your Own Custom Curtain Rods

I have a bayside window and instead of paying too much for custom curtain rods, I made my own, using 1/2 inch flexible black plastic tubing, 1/2 inch electrical wire clips. When I finished hanging that up, I cut off the ends and added a black drawer knob that fit into the tube ends.

The result: a custom curtain rod that cost under $7.00!

It also looks pretty sharp!

Use Your Luggage Carrier For Heavy Items

I have a back problem and cannot lift much so when I go out to shop, I put my collapsible luggage carrier in the car, along with a box that fits on it. When I get home, I set up the luggage carrier with the box and load my purchases into it. Even if I have to make more than one trip, it is worth it. I also have a little flat bed dolly I bought at the hardware store for larger things such as pet food, boxes, etc.

Fuel Gauge Reminder Of Where Your Gas Tank Is Located

Do you ever forget what side your gas tank is on? Well look at your fuel gage inside the car, there should be a little symbol that looks like a gas pump with a little arrow that will either be pointing left or right of your gage. That arrow tells you which side you gas tank is on :-)

Keep Credit Card Receipts Around Card

I am not a fan of credit cards but do use them from time to time when I don't want funds tied up using a debit card or when I need to delay the payment on a large ticket item. It seems like when I use my card ONCE it loosens my resolve and I find myself swiping it more than I had budgeted! Since I usually use a debit card, here is my tip to put the restraint back in using my credit card:

Each and every time I swipe it, I place the receipts around the credit card. This simple act reminds me that I will have a bill in the very near future and is usually all the motivation to pay using cash! I can easily tabulate the funds I'll need to pay off the next bill when it arrives and can spend accordingly!

Questions For God: A Joke

A man had a dream talking with God. He asked God TIME must be different in his dimension, to which God explained 1 second is equal to 1 year.

The man then asked MONEY has no consequence in the spiritual world, and if so, why couldn't God give to the man a million dollars?, to which God replied, "Give me a minute."

Get The Lead Out: Less Lead In Your Drinking Water

If you live in a home or an apartment building that was built before the early 1980's (or even worse one built before the 1920's), then there's a good chance your pipes are soldered with lead. Drinking water remains the second most-common source of lead poisoning in kids, after lead paint. Drinking water is usually contaminated in transport between the local water utility and your faucet via lead pipes in houses built before the 1920's, lead pipes serving as water mains connecting to homes, and lead solder used to join copper piping found in houses built between the 1950's and 1980's.

It only makes sense that water that sat overnight in those pipes would have a higher lead content than fresh water. So, the first time I use my water in the morning. I make sure to run the cold water for several minutes, so I now have fresh, clean water in my home's pipes. Running the cold water for several minutes means you are getting fresh water from the street and are not drinking the water that has sat in your pipes overnight. Don't do this with your hot water because the water comes from the hot-water tank and you'd not want to waste the electricity or gas.

I know it may sound like wastefulness to run your water for several minutes each morning, but if your kids are drinking it or you are making coffee or juice from it, it really makes a difference in taste and lead content. By the 1990's, lead had disappeared as a component of new plumbing, primarily replaced by PVC. Some of the chemicals used to make PVC, such as vinyl chloride and organotin compounds are also dangerous and it is possible, in some cases, for them to leach into the water carried by the pipes. PVC pipes manufactured after 1977 are safer, but for safety's sake, run your water for several minutes each morning before drinking. You'll know you have run the water long enough when the water becomes colder.

Use A Frisbee As Inexpensive Hummingbird Shade

I frequent a Hummingbird forum. On it, there is a photo of a feeder that someone used a Frisbee at the top of the feeder to shade it. It's a great idea and saves buying the expensive ones. Click on the address below then scroll down to see it. There are a couple pics.

We are visiting the dollar store tomorrow to get some. Also making one for my underprivileged neighbor. She's so excited! She gets a Clearwing Humming Bird moth in her garden each year but has yet to see a hummer, she's excited :)

Freeze Your Sliced Bananas

I buy a bunch of just ripe bananas once a month and they never spoil the entire month or until I use them all. My secret for keeping them fresh? The moment I bring them home from the market, I peel them, slice them coin-style, place them in a freezer bag, and chuck them into the freezer. I thaw as much as I need for shakes, deserts and such, or eat them frozen which are really yummy and if you're lactose intolerant like me, they are an alternative to ice cream. This is a money saver and lasts for what seems like forever.

Make Salad Dressing Instead Of Buying It

You will surely scratch this item from your shopping list and never buy salad dressing again after reading this tip. Recycle/clean an old salad dressing bottle and fill it 3/4 from the top full with your favorite oil (e.g. olive or canola or sunflower, etc) and add just a pinch of the following: apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, honey, and pepper. Shake ingredients very well and you've got yourself a good tasting salad dressing made with ingredients you are sure to always have on hand at little to no cost to your wallet

Source: My mother, for years I thought she bought the dressing until I asked her where she ever buys it because I couldn't find it. She made it all those years.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

The father of a teenage daughter was concerned with the amount of time she spent on the telephone. Not so much for the time she wasted (he had given up on that long ago), but because nobody else could use the phone.

So, as a happy solution, he had a telephone installed for her with her own private number and directory listing.

Two or three days after her telephone had been installed, he came home to find her stretched out on the floor with her feet on the living room couch and chatting away on the family telephone. Her own telephone was resting silently on her dresser.

"Why are you using our telephone?" he yelled. "Why aren't you talking on your own telephone?"

"I can't," she said. "I'm expecting an important call on my phone."

Vomit Stain on Carpet

I had my six month old Basset Hound named Howlie spayed this past Monday. When she was brought home from having surgery later that day she was pretty sick from the anesthesia. That evening and all night she kept vomiting up this green bile. It was as green as grass in color. She is doing fine now. What I would like to know is if anyone can tell me how how to get the green color out of my carpet?

I have several green spots on my carpet and have tried everything I can think of. Tried shampooing it out also. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Plastic Left Residue On Wood Table

I got a new dark wood dining room table. I put an heirloom table runner in the center. To protect the table runner from my cat and grandkids I put a clear plastic table cloth over the runner. When I removed the plastic several months later I found that it had left a residue on the table.

I know now that the sun on the plastic caused the problem. I tried lots of obvious things like goo be gone and vinegar, wd40 etc...nothing works. Any ideas would be welcomed.

Recommendations For Plants Along Driveway

Blocking a Doorway for a Dog

We need to keep a door to a bedroom open for air circulation, but the dog has jumped over the baby gate (no babies in the house so don't worry about it) and done his business there.

There really isn't any excuse for this behavior. He goes out as soon as he wakes up, and is free to go into the backyard at any time. Do you have any suggestions? Other than this annoying habit which occurs every now and then, he's trained to go outside.

And in the mean time, is there any way we can block off the doorway and still easily permit human access? This dog is a very good jumper.
