Idea For Reusing Tidy-Cat Kitty Litter Containers

The Tidy-Cat 27 lb. plastic container with the handle, when empty, and washed out, makes a really sturdy catch all for small toys to store! I've got 3 of them for the grandkids and they love them! And they are not too heavy to carry around, either.

My daughter uses those for storage of yarn. I keep an empty one next to the cat box. When I clean the cat box, I put the stuff in the plastic bags we carry groceries in, then knot it up and store it in the empty kitty litter box so that it is all in one place when garbage day comes. Then I empty it into the garbage can and refill it again. If the bags are knotted, they won't leak litter or smell. But, if it starts to smell, put baking soda in the bottom of it or a fabric softener sheet.

(Wash with warm, soapy water first)

1) Great for keeping bags of birdseed fresh and away from squirrels!

2) Punch holes in the bottom with a nail and use as a large outdoor planter. You can decorate these easily with spray paints made for plastic, using mosaic tiles and grout or by handpainting or stenciling with any outdoor, weather-resistant paint.

We use them for storage of: cheaper bagged cat litter, dry cat food, guinea pig food pellets, salt for winter ice, small garden tools (provides a seat to rest & a bucket for weeds!), potting soil, toy building sets w/ many parts, small tools & fix-it supplies, etc. We often cut the label off the bag of cat food or whatever & tape it to the litter bucket for easy identification.

Other uses: cleaning & car washing buckets, soaking buckets for soiled clothing (esp. at potty training! put the lid on to keep kids safe!), sick room buckets, small trash cans, post more...

I use them to store cat food when I buy the big bags of cat food. The food is protecxted from other critters and insects.

How does one cover up the labeling (which is now printed onto the container itself) permanently.

I want to use the buckets for my future elementary school classroom to keep toys/books/supplies in but don't want to freak anyone out when they see the labeling. I triedpaper but it gets torn out.

Please advise. Thanks.

To cover the imprinted labels try Contact Paper .. it comes in so many cute patterns and can be written on with Sharpies to create labels! I did this with just regular rubbermaid plastic tubs to keep closets organized and it's held up pretty well!

I've put over 3000 km of bicycle touring and probably as much distance just going to and from shopping with my re-used buckets. They're really sturdy and come on and off easily - sometime I bring them into the store to save having to hunt for a basket.

Use them for container gardening veggies. The size is perfect for tomatoes, peppers, squah and more.

You can get the label off using Brasso and a lot of elbow grease.

LEGO hobbyists dealt with this one several years ago. Erasers worked okay, but took forever to take the decal off the bricks. Then some wise apple used brasso, and found it worked like a charm.

I have tried this on two Tidy Cats buckets. It worked really well on the yellow bucket, and not-so-well on the clear. The decal came off of both, but the clear bucket looks a bit cloudy where the decal used to be.

I used paper towel...you might get a better result using old cotton cloth or cotton balls.

I AM planning on using them for winter salt containers @ my work place. Hoping to find a source for free. I won't have emptied enough by the time I need them.

I used my tidy litter bags to make 'green' grocery bags to give as holiday gifts.

That is awesome. How do you do this? Or do you sell them?

You can make Halloween buckets for kids to carry trick or treating. Spray paint them orange and make a jack-o-lantern or any other Halloween idea.

We use the tidy cat litter containers to put the old used litter back in. The lid keeps the smell inside and we don't have to take it to the trash daily. When it gets full the handle helps to take it out to dump in the trash. I am planning to use some of them to make feral cat houses next. The lid can double for a door that will help keep out the cold. Turn them on their sides and put some straw and/or some bedding and leave the top lid open to where they can either lift it up or push it to the side themselves. No cutting at all. Just clean, put bedding in and it's ready to go.

They can even be stacked for multiple feral cats that need to stay warm this winter. It's waterproof also. You can also cut a circular hole in the red lid if you want to keep the lid closed and only have the entrance but the flap will keep the draft out because it automatically closes by itself and a cat is still able to open it with it's nose or paw. You can add insulation to the back of the house which is the bottom of the container when it's standing up and also the tops and sides for extra warmth. You could probably afix 2 of them to each other and create one for a momma cat with her kittens and just cut a hole in the end so they have another exit also or for multiple cats and use the lid as a divider and just place the holes in the front or at the ends of each container.

There are so many options with stacking them also. By cutting a hole in the bottom side of one and placing a tray or bowl next to it you can make a dry cat or dog food dispenser for feral's or stray dogs also.

When I take my dog to a friends house to spend the night. I use one of these to put his food in ziploc bags, his meds and other supplies in . Easy to transport and I can set it in the kitchen at my friends house and the dogs stay out of it. I have one in the back of the John Deere Gator with t post fencing clips in it. I use it to sit on while I am taking the old clips off a post and barbed wire . Then pull the post and reset it and sit on the lid while I am fastening the new clips. Keeps the stuff in it dry even sitting in the back of the gator between work days. I can only do 2-4 posts a day with my back and hip. I live on a ranch and have a lot of them to reset.

also use it to carry tools around the ranch when I need to repair stuff. And sand by the front and back door in winter

What are the dimensions of the 25 lb container. Do not want to order and not have it fit in my laundry room.

I think you will probably need to contact the manufacturer directly for the specifications. This original post was made in 2005 and I don't think the original member is still active on the site.
