Before Eating Junk Food, Consider Medical Costs Down The Road
When choosing healthy food and considering cost, it helps to remember what the dentist charges for a filling if I eat junk food, what cholesterol and diabetic prescriptions cost, not to mention the cost of going to the doctor and other medical tests. One co-pay at the doctor's office could have bought good food at the grocery store. Cheap junk food ends up being a lot more expensive than healthy snacks.

Healthy Eating For Overall Health
Even with being frugal, you need to look at the big picture. For overall health and weight loss, you have to look at long term eating and not just immediate gratification. I shop at Aldi's every other week and our Aldi's has a produce section where the healthy treats would be as inexpensive as chips. There are also healthier chips and such at our Aldi's. I have been finding healthy recipes online and buying the ingredients at Aldi's. I too used to think that it was cheaper to eat unhealthy, but I am finding this is not true and am feeling so much better about myself.

Preparing Fresh Fruit for the Week
I buy seedless watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew, or grapes, and cut it all up into a large covered bowl, and eat fresh fruit all week. For breakfast I pour a carton of non-fat yogurt and a handful of low-fat granole on top. Healthy and lite!

Getting the Family to Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
To get my family to eat more fruits and vegetables I cut them all up (like apples, or peel oranges) and put them in single servings in a plastic bag. So they can just grab what they want and not have to worry about fixing it themselves. It helps me to eat my fruit too!

Raise a Glass to Healthier (and Cheaper) Eating
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh
The primary reason for eating healthy is to maintain a properly working body. More than half of health disorders are linked to obesity. However, after my husband was forced to alter his eating habits due to various health reasons and possible long-term complications, our family realized another perk to eating in moderation - savings. We've all adopted this new healthy lifestyle, and our weekly grocery bills have gone down by 40%! Here's why.

I am looking for some healthy beverages. I know what is healthy, I try to drink a lot of that. But what else can I drink as I try to cut out coffee and soda pop?
Thanks,

A Healthy Meat Substitute
By Deborah Taylor-Hough
What if I told you I'd found a food you can use like meat that's not only dirt cheap, but also healthier than many other food items on the market? You'd probably think I also had some swamp land in Florida to sell you cheap.

Encouraging Kids to Eat Fruits and Vegetables
Getting Kids to Eat Veggies
If you have children who turn up their noses at cooked veggies, puree some of the cooked veggies and then add them to your soup, stew, etc. I also chop coarsely cooked peas, carrots, and potatoes and add them to my meat loaf mix. It makes the meat loaf extremely moist and the kids are none the wiser.
This has worked for my daughter for many years and I now I do it for the grandchildren as well.

Blended Vegetables
Will your kids eat stew but pick out the vegetables they don't like? To sneak more healthy vegetables into your picky eaters try blending the vegetables to a pulp with a cup or two of water and then pour this into your soup or stew stock.
Of course, you have to season this stock well so they won't taste the vegetables. Add coloring or Kitchen Bouquet Browning and Seasoning Sauce if necessary to make it look like a brown stock.

Dipping Sauce
Encourage your children to eat more fruits and veggies by giving them something healthy to dip them into. A yogurt based salad dressing is good for dipping veggies, and fruit yogurt is great for dipping fruit.

Vanilla Yogurt Dipping Sauce
I found a great healthy snack that my kids love and it's simple. Slice up an apple and serve with vanilla yogurt to dip them in. My kids eat a lot more apples and yogurt now. It's great with grapes too!

Roasting Vegetables
Try roasting your veggies especially brocolli, cauliflower, zuchinni and carrots in the oven. If you toss the veggies in a little bit of olive oil with italian seasoning or other spices and put in oven until tender. The veggies lose their sulfur taste and become sweet - at least to me. Also zuchinni coated with olive oil and parmesan cheese and cooking in oven.

Veggies in the Spaghetti Sauce
One way to make spaghetti sauce go even further is to add frozen mixed veggies. It's one way to get picky children to eat their veggies without them even realising vegetables have been consumed.

Groceries Are Cheaper Than Doctor Bills
When I was raising our children my mother-in-law told me one day as I too was complaining about food prices. "groceries are a lot cheaper then doctor bills" and I never forget that and raised four healthy beautiful adults.

Sneak Vegetables Into Your Dinner!
This is a great way to cut out some of the carbohydrates from your mashed potatoes, and sneak some veggies in. Clean, cut up, and steam or microwave a head of cauliflower until it's soft, then put it in the blender or food processor, and process it into a fine puree (add water as needed). Then mix the puree in with your regular mashed potatoes. I also added a bit of instant potato flakes (like Potato Buds) to thicken things up a bit. Season with olive oil, a bit of butter, and a dash of garlic powder and black pepper.
I just tried this at dinner today, and my husband and 5-year-old not only didn't complain, they both had second helpings!

Your health is worth much more than what you can save by eating junk. Cut back on other areas; possessions come and go, but you only have one body. You are buying quality of life, not just apples. Our family of four eats unprocessed, mostly organic foods on $100 a week, mostly by cooking everything ourselves. Give yourself some time to transition to this new lifestyle and mindset, and you'll find yourself actually spending less, not more.
