Solar Lights For Power Outages
When we have a power outage, I bring in 2 or 3 of my solar lights from the garden. They are much safer than candles and can be recharged so they are always ready for use.

Transporting Cooked Turkey
If you must transport your turkey, it can be cooked the day before. When done, let it cool, absorbing the juices. Then carve, laying a bed of any lettuce, a layer of sliced turkey and so on, in a dish. Put a layer of lettuce on the top and put in fridge. When traveling, be sure to keep in cooler with ice. Arrive and put in over at 350 degrees F for 20 to 30 min. When heated, place turkey on platter and discard lettuce. Serve.

Buy Cheap Spectacles For Out Of The House
To help with reading "small print" on labels at the supermarket or just shopping in general... I have purchased several cheap pairs of magnifying spectacles, various colours to match what I'm wearing or at least look trendy. I pop them on top of my head when not in use (like you do with sun glasses), a bit like a head-band or hair accessory. When I need to look at something up close, they are there, in seconds.
The best spectacles I've found are from Spotlight (similar to your Dollar Stores), they even have ones with a bayonet connection (tiny springs where the arms connect to the glasses) at the sides which allows for any size head without breaking from continual use. I have been doing this for years now. My prescription reading glasses stay at home (safely) beside the computer, too expensive to keep replacing if you lose them whilst shopping!
I really enjoy this site and have used many thrifty ideas over the past few years. GO THRIFTY!

Hang Everyday Clothes Inside Out
When putting clothes away in the closet, and you have a mix of 'can use for everyday' and good in the same one--I put the everyday use tops/blouses/shirts on hangers inside out.
This is extremely helpful when I send someone to my closet to grab something, the kids stand and wonder which are school, dress or doesn't matter pieces. Jeans go in the draw for any time wear, on a hanger for school or dress.

Be Prepared For A Kitchen Fire
It has been three years ago this month I had a kitchen fire and panicked. When the fire got out of hand, all I could think about was calling 911 and getting my dog and myself out of the house. We had extensive fire damage to the kitchen and extensive smoke damage to the entire house. We were out of our house for three months.
As I was reflecting on that experience today, I felt strongly the need to share a few tips with you. The first thing I learned is never, to throw anything on your kitchen counter where you have a smooth top cooking range. I did this as I came into the house with groceries. I then headed to another room in the house to use the bathroom. When I came back to the kitchen, the entire area above the stove top was in flames. I did do the correct thing by calling 911 and getting my dog. I did not remember to use the fire extinguisher, and, to be honest, I doubt I could have put it to good use. Now, I am aware of how to use the extinguisher.
After calling 911, here are a few things you can do. If the fire is contained in your oven, close the oven door immediately and turn the oven off. If it is a small grease fire, put a lid on the pan. Do not lift the lid again or oxygen can start the fire up again. Here are the directions for using your fire extinguisher, read them and commit them to memory. Remove the plastic tie from the handle, pull the pin out and aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Keeping the extingusher upright, move the extinguisher from side to side until the fire is completely out. If this does not work, back yourself out of the room and get out of there. Again, be sure you have called 911.
If you catch your sleeve on fire or any part of your clothing, STOP, DROP, and ROLL by doing this you are taking oxygen away from the fire, so you never want to wave your clothes around. Thankfully, I was not hurt in my kitchen fire, but the months that followed were very stressful to say the least. Even with insurance, we had a large amount of money we had to pay out of pocket.

Be "Thrifty" with Your Germs
It's not so much what you wash your hands with so much as how you wash them. You should always wash your hands in warm water. Lather up with soap for at least 10 - 15 seconds, cleaning between your fingers, under your nails, and up and over your wrists. Then rinse, and dry with a clean towel. Make this procedure a "must" in your house this winter and keep cold and flu germs at bay.

Coffee Filters for Small Servings
The other day my friend was over and we were having pizza for the eight kids. When I realized there was no paper towels or paper plates, we used coffee filters and they worked wonderfully. I then realized you could use them for all kinds of things, popcorn, chips, m&m's (they won't roll off the paper). I also let the kids draw on them with washable markers. Then lightly spritz them with water, and watch the colors combine. Hope you enjoy this tip.

Paint Color Ideas
My wife and I have been dwelling on our kitchen paint color for 4 months. We have 10 different sample paints on the wall. we have stainless steel appliances, dark cherry cabinets and cherry hardwood floors. Someone suggested that we paint our kitchen Silver Sage but we don't think the color complements very well. Any suggestions on color?
