Redecorating a Girl's Car Seat for a Boy

A neighbor gave my son a booster seat they were not using. Unfortunately, the seat had pink decorations on it. After researching and seeing that covers for the seat would run about $60, I improvised. I took out my painters tape, marked off the sections that were pink, then I got my fabric paint out and made it more appealing to a boy. So, we got a neat new car seat for practically nothing!

Jeter (Yellow Lab)

Jeter is a 3 year old Yellow Lab. I bought him in 2006. He likes to chase the cat across the street. He has an uncanny way of knowing when another dog is going by the house.

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Use Flat Sheet as a Bed Skirt

Sometimes when I buy sheet sets and don't use the flat sheet, I have found a very nifty use for them. Take your mattress off of your bed. Put the flat sheet on the box springs, and let it hang. Then put the mattress back on. Bling, you have a matching bed skirt, and it's cute, too.

Keeping Track of Bill Due Dates

To help me pay my bills on time, I put them in a drawer that I open often. I write the date due on the envelope, and stack them with the earliest date on top. This helps me pay on time.

Wear Plastic Bag When Painting Overhead

You can wear a garbage bag when painting overhead. Cut holes for your head and arms. To keep your hair from having paint splattered on it, wear a shower cap.

Cleaning "Sticky" Plastic Containers

Plastic Tupperware, Rubbermaid, or other containers can become "sticky" feeling if not used regularly. To get rid of the sticky residue, wash the items with Murphy's Oil Soap, and they'll be good as new again. Try it and see for yourself.

Removing Mothball Smell From Clothing

How to remove the smell of moth balls from clothes.

It's easy and costs nothing (providing you have a steam iron).

Wash the garment then iron at the relevant setting. The heat from the iron releases the molecule causing the smell. You could also try this on dry clothes with the steam setting.

My advice is to set the ironing table up out of doors. As you see the steam blowing away you know the smell is going with it. Then hang the clothes outside to air. When you are sure they are completely dry, pop them into a plastic bag with some lavender and you will have your formerly unusable clothes back (the lavender step is optional - or use a cotton wool pad sprayed with your favourite perfume - be creative).

I have just retrieved a bag full of woolen garments this way. I washed the garments then set the iron on wool/steam and was amazed at the instant results. I've just brought my woolens in from the line and there is not a trace of the smell of moth balls (an hour ago the smell from them was making me sick).

I suppose carpets, curtains and upholstery can be steam cleaned as can vehicle interiors just remember to create as much ventilation and through draft as possible as the steam produced is carrying the smell.

I don't know about using steam on timber furniture. I read a post saying wetting timber only injects the smell further into the object, but maybe a question placed on the woodworking forums might produce a solution.

I agree with the writer who said this stuff should come with a warning and thanks to the Perth (Australia) writer who explained about the 'smell molecule' affected by heat.

Hope you have as much success as I did.

Love, Margaret from Brisbane Australia

Don't Use Choke Chain as a Collar

Warning! For those who use a choke chain as a collar on their dogs, please don't. Take them off! Only use choke chains during training sessions, or if necessary, when walking on a leash.

We used to have a friend who used a choke chain as a regular collar on her chihuahua mix. She used to bring her dog over to play with my Tibetan Spaniel. One day the dogs were in the yard playing and all of a sudden we heard the worst yelping from both dogs we had ever heard before. We ran out and the two dogs were caught up together and tumbling all over the place trying to get free. My dog's lower jaw was caught in the other dog's choke chain and the more they tumbled the tighter it got. It almost ripped her jaw right off her face, along with almost choking the other dog to death.

If it wasn't for another neighbor hearing our screams for help and coming with a strong set of chain cutters, we'd have both lost our dogs that day.

Choke chains are fine, but they have their place. And using them for every day collars is extremely dangerous.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

My next-door neighbor and I frequently borrow things from each other. Not long ago, when I requested his ladder, he told me he had lent it to his son. Recalling a saying my grandmother used to repeat, I recited, "You should never lend anything to your kids, because you will never get it back."

With that, he responded, "Well, it's not even my ladder. It's actually my dad's."

Pine Floors Have Turned Orange

We finished a southern pine floor with clear, oil based semi-gloss varathane. We wanted the floor to stay a natural color, but they have turned orangey. How could we have prevented this orange color? Should we have used some kind of base coat first, or should we have used a completely different finishing product? We have more floors to finish and we don't want the same thing to happen to them.

Feeling Sick When Using Polident Adhesive

Has anyone experienced ill health after using Polident Denture adhesive for a while? I've been using it for about 4 months now and have been getting sicker and sicker. I notice that if I can go 3-4 days without using it to put my temporary dentures in, then I start to feel a little better. Unfortunately I have to have teeth to eat, and if I go anywhere I need them in.

Removing Hair Spray from Furniture

I recently got quite a bit of hair spray and a tiny bit of nail polish on my brown, leather sofa and my lamp, which is metal (don't know what kind, it's the base of the lamp) with a dull-brass shade. Help. I'm afraid to try to clean either one, for fear of removing the brown dye on the sofa and damaging the finish on my lamp. Ideas, please? Thanks so much for your help.

Indesit WIE147 Washer Leaking

My washing machine keeps leaking during the wash cycle, it looks as if the water is coming from the soap dispenser and also from the bottom of the machine but that is hard to tell? Do you know what I need to do to stop this? The soap dispenser draw looks like it has some small amounts of black sludge in it, but I cant get the drawer out to clean it? There is permanently water in the right hand side section which I think is for softener so I have been putting the softener in with the powder?

Enclosing an Outdoor Patio

I would like to enclose parts of my outdoor patio that has a very high metal canopy. Does anyone have any ideas on what type of material I can use that isn't too expensive? I live in a mobile home park and we can't have any fences or anything that is considered permanent. I'd like some type of curtain that could be drawn and then tied back.

Red Marks from a Tick Bite

I went to the Dr. today because I broke out with red marks on my arms, neck and head. They look like a mosquito bite but she said it was from a tick. They seem to ooze from the middle too. She told me it isn't Lyme disease.

I have about 20 on my scalp and maybe 15 on my arms and neck. She said it could have gotten in my bloodstream and that is why it is spreading. I am on medicine now and some cream to stop the itching. Has anyone ever hear of more than one mark from a tick bite? Thanks.
