Volume Six, Number 139, July 20, 2007 (Read It Online)

Well, this week has flown by. It's been one of our busiest weeks on the website ever. Our servers have been holding up pretty well but we are looking into upgrading one of our machines. We hope to do that in the next couple weeks.

We really appreciate all the people that take time to submit tips, recipes and photos. Have a great weekend.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

A Child's Reminder Of A Working Mother

My daughter leaves for work as a courier at 2:00 PM. Her 2 year old daughter doesn't understand the term "work"! At a recent church drama in which my daughter portrayed a role of a 40 hour worker during the song, "40 Hour Work Week", I thought I would make a picture of her and her daughter!

The picture is of my daughter in her work uniform with a Federal Express box kneeling down by her daughter who is sitting in a stroller. I will frame this picture and when Mommy goes to work, Hannah can get the picture and know where Mommy is going - "Mommy is going to drive the big truck and give away boxes!" This picture was taken at the church before the performance began; but it will give Hannah the explanation of Mommy's work!

I think this tip is good to teach young children about their parent's employment and as the child grows older, the concept of "Mommy going to work" becomes a reality with a picture!

Walking Onion

If you like onion, the Walking Onion is a fun one to grow. Completely edible from the bulbs to the greens to the little bublets that grow on it's tips, this mild tasting onion is a great conversation starter as well. It starts out growing like green bunching onion, but then these little bublet clusters form at the tips. They start to send out crazy looking "arms" and then get heavy and cause the stalk to tip over. When the bublets touch the ground, they root and start a new bunch, which is why the onion seems like it is "walking". Great in stirfry, or raw in salads and sandwiches, and fun to look at in your garden!

Bella (Chihuahua and Daschund)

Bella is a 1 year old Chihuahua and Daschund mix. We adopted Bella from the Humane Society of North Texas 3 months ago. She has lots of chew toys that she tears up all over the house, and she is always making the cat (Sophie) mad so that she will chase her. She's very shy because when we got her she had been abused, but now she is happy and healthy!

Pie Server To Get Every Bit Out Of Food Packets

Do you buy those new foil packets or pouches of salmon, tuna or chicken products? Do you have trouble getting out all the little pieces from the corners of the packages? I use a pie slice server to rake out those hard to get pieces, to me it works better than a fork. It does the trick!

Look For New Gift Items At Thrift Stores

When I am in thrift shops, I always look for little gift items - there are so many occasions to give little gifts - besides birthdays, there are get well gifts and so on. Some thrift shops seem to have pipelines to leftovers from stores with gifty items - so I stock up whenever I see them. Just got some fancy notebooks and a little artificial potted plant - and of course, books!

Dealing with Heat at Work

I work in a hot factory, and keep a spray bottle filled with water to spritz now and then. I also wet a paper towel with cold water and put in the middle of my bra. Helps to cool my whole body down! For the guys, I would suggest wet paper towels on the back of your neck.

Clean and Green Bathrooms
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

There's two ways to add green to your cleaning routine, save money and save the planet. Get rid of those harsh and expensive chemical cleaners and look at a whole new way of cleaning the house. Start with what's probably the first room that comes to mind, the bathroom. Bathroom cleaners are expensive at nearly $5 a bottle or more. With one product for tub and tile, another for toilets, drain cleaner, shower head cleaner, and air freshener, you're looking at $30 or more for cleaning products in one room of your home. (Not to mention a cabinet full of cleaners.) Try mixing up your own batches of cheap, enviro-friendly cleaners that are light on the wallet.

Tile, Tub, and Sink

  • Ingredients: baking soda, vinegar
  • Cost: $1.50
  • What to do: Vinegar is your replacement for products like Mr. Clean. At $1 a bottle, it can't be beat and it cleans most anything. Dilute it with water at a 1/2 cup to 1 gallon mix (stronger if necessary.) If film is present in the tub rub the vinegar directly onto the film before scouring it with a sponge covered in baking soda. Rinse the sponge and use it to rinse away the surface.

Toilet

  • Ingredients: baking soda and vinegar
  • Cost: $1.50
  • What to do: Shake the baking soda inside the toilet bowl to cover it. Then, spray vinegar from a spray bottle onto the baking soda and wipe or scour with a toilet brush.

Drains

  • Ingredients: baking soda, vinegar, water
  • Cost: $1
  • What to do: Use often to keep drains clear before they clog. Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the drain. Follow it with 1 cup of vinegar. Allow it to sit and foam for several minutes before flushing it with 1 gallon of boiling water.

Lime Stains

  • Ingredients: vinegar, paper towels
  • Cost: $1
  • What to do: Soak the paper towels with vinegar. Then, wad the towels and lay them on top of the stain or wrap them around the faucet which is stained. After an hour remove the towels and rinse the area.

Clogged Shower Heads - only use on metal shower heads

  • Ingredients: You guessed it! Vinegar
  • Cost: $1
  • What to do: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar into 1 quart of water. Remove the shower head from its fixture and place it and the mixture into a kitchen pot. Boil for 15 minutes. Compared to expensive CLR Cleaner, this is a deal!

Hard Water Rust Stains

  • Ingredients: vinegar, lemon juice
  • Cost: $2
  • What to do: Drip the vinegar or lemon juice directly onto the stain (use a towel to apply it directly if necessary.) Let it stand or hold it there until the stain disappears before rinsing the area.

You've probably guessed that vinegar is a key ingredient in cleaning most everything - my grandmother's been telling me this for years. Clear the clutter of your cleaning supplies and replace it with a bottle of vinegar, baking soda, and a few other kitchen ingredients and you'll have an environmentally friendly, hard working collection of cleaning products all for under $5 total.

Washing Blankets

Set the cycle, add detergent, and let the machine fill. When all the soap is dissolved, add the blanket. Let it soak, and then wash on gentle. Add 1 1/2 cups white vinegar to the final rinse. It will give the blanket a clean smell and give it a little fluff.

A Wine Rack For Bath Towels

For a different look in your bathroom, take a wine rack and store your rolled up bath towels in it. This new look has been a topic of conversation for my house guests many times over. You can even personalize it with specific colors and paint treatments along with other crafty add-ons like beads, shells, raffia, etc.

Negotiating With Yourself About Chores

On the days when I just don't feel like bailing into the "to-do" list, I negotiate with myself to accomplish at least the rudimentary stuff I have to get done. For example, if I am reading a good book or watching television, I "work" at the end of a chapter or work on the commercials.

It's amazing how much you can accomplish towards getting a house straightened up, preparation towards an evening meal or doing the laundry when you work just during the commercials. I am motivated to hurry up and get the job (or a portion of the job) done before the program begins again.

Taking Care of Your Feet

When looking for shoes, an expensive pair of shoes will often last longer than a cheaper pair. Plus the better shoes will be better for your feet, especially if you're on your feet a lot. I got this advice from my Doctor. It's better to take care of your feet while you can, rather than later on wishing you had.

Conscious Decision to Have Leftovers

As I was preparing dinner Saturday night, I made a conscious decision to have leftovers. I was sauteing chicken breasts for our meal and included one more than I would need, planned to cook frozen peas and included as a side dish a box of chicken flavored rice. After dinner, all the leftovers were refrigerated individually.

Today, I defrosted and heated homemade chicken broth, added a diced carrot and cooked, then added the peas to the pot, then the rice and finally the diced chicken meat. I adjusted seasonings to our preferences (more pepper, more parsley, a touch of onion salt) and with next to no effort, I have homemade chicken rice soup.

There won't be so much as a morsel of that pot left over!

Scrapbooking When You Travel

Tips from the ThriftyFun community about collecting items for your travel scrapbook. Post your own ideas here.

Use Brochures In Scrapbooking

While on vacation, pick up free brochures advertising 'things to do' in that area - and then correlate them with your photos for that vacation page. They often include maps, big headlines, backdrops, etc. and other fun things that will save you money later!

By Carol

What To Save And Photograph While Traveling

I put the maps and brochures (be sure to pick up 2 of each, in case of information on each side) and arrange them in my scrapbook along with the trip we made. Because they are not acid free, I make sure that they are on a separate page or on the same page but well away from the pictures I took.

Brochures will sometimes give you a different angle of the building or area than you were able to get when there. The information I brought back from Cuba last year went into my vacation scrapbook in the first few pages as an introduction to where we had gone.

I also had a Cuban tea when in Cuba. Each time, I saved the little paper tags on the tea bags and when doing the scrapbook used them on the edge of the page to accent the page. Take pictures of your waiter, door room number, people in the resort that you interacted with frequently. When they are in your book later, it makes your pages more alive and personal instead of only beach and scenery pictures. And have fun scrapbooking!

Keeping Cat Hair Off Black Clothing

I bought a pair of Cabin Creek brand black pants (elastic waist "leggings" with flared legs) that were supposed to be jeans. They are 96% cotton and 4% spandex, and they attract EVERYTHING: cat hair, dust, lint, etc. Any suggestions for what I can do to make them less of a lint magnet? I tried Static Guard which, unfortunately, didn't help much. Thanks.

Using Pool Bleach Tablets for Laundry

I have been given a bucket of chlorine tablets for my above ground pool. I am thrilled that I don't have to purchase these this year, in fact I may have enough for a couple of years. Anyway, I was wondering, can I put one of these tablets in a bucket of water and make bleach for my laundry? Any thoughts would be appreciated! I know that I need to keep this solution out of the area of pets and people as the fumes may cause problems, but if I can make bleach water that would be great!

Pruning Hydrangeas

I am wondering about the proper technique for pruning my mophead hydrangeas. They have only bloomed once. One was planted by the prior owners of our house and it never bloomed. I planted another close by, which bloomed and then so did the older one! That was two years ago. Since then, I tried pruning one year- resulting in no blooms. This year I did nothing in the lines of pruning and the only flower I got was buried at the very bottom in the back of the plant. Should I be covering the hydrangeas in the winter time or will proper pruning help?

Growing English Laurel From Cuttings

I'm trying to propagate English Laurel. I need a super-fast growing hedge for privacy and can't afford to buy the plants. But I DO have access to cuttings.

Here's what I've tried so far: I'm using flat plastic boxes about 4 " deep with just sand in some and plant soil mixed with sand in others. I cut the little darlings off their mother hedge and let them soak up water in a vase for 2 days, then I clipped them off just under a "Leaf Node" and scored the bottom inch vertically with a knife then dipped them into rooting powder nad planted them into the sand. Some I cut from the bush in the Spring, and some in July. (I've heard Fall or Spring is best?)

But, I killed off about half of the cuttings because someone told me to and cover the whole bunch with clear plastic and make a sort-of "terrarium" for them because they love moisture. I only covered them for 3 days, but most of them died during those 3 days, (I think from moisture rot?) So, I took the plastic off them and pulled out the leaves and stems. I've heard "Good Drainage" is the key. But I water them before they dry out. They are on the North side of my Mobile Home. (mostly in the shade, except in the early morning)

I have just bought some Perlite and was thinking of using this in place of sand for new cuttings. Will it work, or should I mix it with sand too? If any of you has made successful rooted cuttings from English Laurel, your help would be very much appreciated! Help!
