Preschool Thanksgiving Cornucopia

This is a cornucopia my 3 yr. old grandson made in preschool. It was to be filled with things he is thankful for. I asked him to tell me about the pictures he glued in and he told me about Thomas and the toilet paper. I told him his grandma is thankful for toilet paper too.

Craft Project: Glitter Holiday Balls

I found 25 of each silver and gold glitter balls in a bag at the Salvation Army in Tucson, AZ. If you can't find something similar, don't worry. Sometimes you can find them covered in shiny surfaces, and you can add your own touches.

Craft Project: Crocheted Wreath

To make these fast I use double strands and a size "N" hook. This is about 3.5 inches in diameter.

Chain 6 and form a chain. Single crochet in that ring till you have 24 and slip stitch to join. Chain 3 and slip stitch in every other stitch, giving you 12 loops. Break off and secure.

Cool glue a ribbon bow and decoration of your choice!

Enjoy!

In Memory of Cujo

While cleaning out my desk, I ran across something someone sent in to Dear Abby, when it was still her at the helm.

It is the wit and wisdom of a dog, were it able to speak.

"Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I might lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the word's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when the sound of your footsteps falls upon my waiting ears.

Please take me inside when it's cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food that I might stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun.

Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this Earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands".

My Cujo went quietly this summer, after being my friend, guide, bedwarmer, playmate, protector, loving ear and eager snuggler for almost 17 years. I miss her dearly. But I was blessed to have had her at all, much less almost her entire life.

She had a small body but a huge bark, so her name had to be something big and fierce! So, to all the pet lovers out there, I hope this gives you some comfort. Poor But Proud

My Little Drum (Marie)

This is an updated version of an old favorite that starts with a fun painting technique and ends with the addition of drumsticks. It's the perfect project for your little Thanksgiving "Indian" or your little holiday "Drummer Boy" (or girl!). The best part? This is a VERY quiet drum. The one in the picture was made by my 3 year old grandson.

Today's Tips:

Take Cell Picture of the Parking Lot Location of your Car

If you've ever tried to return to your car after shopping, and couldn't remember where you parked, then you'll appreciate this simple tip, so you won't spend precious time trying to find your car in a sea of others. Just take your cell phone out, snap a picture showing your location and shop 'til you drop knowing you won't be frantically trying to locate your car--especially in cold or rainy weather. An added advantage of not having to wander around searching is the safety issue. You need to get safely into your car as soon as possible.

Thrifty Clean Toilet with Bleach and Mouthwash

If you want to clean your toilet and not spend a lot of money buying extra chemicals, consider cleaning your toilet with a little bleach and mouthwash. I pour in a little bleach, and then swish it around with the brush. Then I add a capful of mouthwash from the dollar store to add a fresh scent. I let it sit for about 15 minutes and then flush. The dollar store mouthwash is cheap and makes the bowl smell so nice.

Scented Christmas Gift Bags

I store my Christmas gift bags and tissue paper in a sealed plastic container along with 6 Christmas Spice scented tealight candles. The bags and tissue absorb and maintain the scent very well.

It is a lovely way to add a little festive touch and costs next to nothing. ( I paid a dollar at our local $$ store for a box of 6 scented tealight candles). And your home will smell lovely!

For my year round gift bags, boxes and tissue paper, I store them in a separate container with a scented candle called Rain Fresh.

Use Clearance Wallpaper for Shelf and Drawer Liners

I buy wallpaper on clearance for about $2.00 a double roll and I use it for shelf paper and drawer liners. You can do a large kitchen and all your dressers with just 1 double roll. Department stores put it in the clearance bin because the leftover rolls are not enough to paper most rooms, so they get stuck with it and practically give it away.

You can use double face tape, staples or tacks to secure it if you need to. (I usually don't) I look for quiet solids or prints, if you look around you can sometimes find the nice heavy vinyl paper, but even the paper rolls are all washable these days. I usually buy it when I find it and put it away until I need it. So next time you see it in the clearance bin pick some up.

Skin Preparation for Wedding Photos

To get the most out of your wedding photos, start early with caring for your hair and skin. Start drinking lots of water and get plenty of sleep. Both are essential to healthy hair and skin. Try a chemical peel with your facial for effortless even application of makeup.

Free skin care tip, if you have acne, start two weeks before your special date doing an aspirin mask. Take three or four generic aspirin (not coated) and dissolve in a bit of water (milk is even better). Brush paste on face and leave until dry (will flake off). Do this mask two times a week for unbelievably smooth clear skin!

Use Power Strips to Eliminate Energy Waste

Save money at home, cut down on your electric bills. Eliminate the so called "Energy Vampires" that eat electricity while not in use. We connected power strips to most of our electric appliances so we can shut them off without crawling around behind everything to pull the plugs, we just flip the switch on the power strip. Make sure you place the power strips where you can reach them easily. I put one on my microwave oven (I don't need another clock) and the coffee maker. All computers can be shut off this way, the TV, DVD and stereo are all on one power strip, I leave the DVR plugged in because it needs to receive nightly updates.

The cell phone chargers and the printer are on one strip. This really makes a difference on your bill, even if you turn it on in the morning and off at night when you go to bed you will still see a tremendous difference on your bills. If you shut them off every time you turn them off you will save even more. You can leave the bedroom TVs turned on at night, so the remote control will work in the morning, then shut it off all day long when it's not in use.

Dollar Store Treasure Chest for Christmas

Since one of the best parts of Christmas for little kids is to open presents, I decided this year to make it a real treasure chest for my grandchildren. I went to our local Dollar Store and bought each one of them a plastic bin, then started picking out as many gender/age appropriate little items as I could find. They included stickers, pens, pencils, crayons, Play-Doh, coloring books, story books, hair accessories, diaries, erasers, markers, puzzles, playing cards, photo frames and so on.

To make the parents happy and cut down on all the candy and chocolate they might consume, I bought individual applesauces, juice boxes and even a pudding type cake mix that they can bake with their parents at a later time to create some family fun. I then proceeded to wrap each and every item separately and fill each bin to the top.

After each was full, I took plain green and red Christmas plastic tablecloths, set the bin in the middle, pulled the tablecloth up around it and tied a ribbon around it. Now when the kids open the tablecloth not only will they will find the all the little treasures inside left to open, but have a plastic sheet to play on, write on, stick stickers on etc, and create their very own masterpieces. It will also set the adults minds at ease knowing the carpet or table is protected from any markers, etc. They also have a bin to collect and carry all their little treasures home in. I can't wait to see their faces on Christmas.

Making a Christmas Wreath for Nothing

Find a pine tree with branches close to the ground. Cut enough branches for you to make a wreath. Make a circle base with the branches and then build on with other branches. I used twine to bind the wreath, you can use craft wire or even ribbon. Break out your old Christmas decorations and decorate the wreath any way you like.

Cook for Other Families to Save Money

To save money on groceries, you could find one or two families who you know are very busy and either eat out a lot or order in a lot. See if they would be interested in having you make meals for them. The key is they buy enough groceries to make enough for their family and yours. I find if you're making a meal anyways, it is very easy to double it. I personally make meals for two separate families. One family I will cook for two days a week and the second I will cook for the remaining three days, with the weekends being leftover days. Then on Fridays, I sit down and make up the menus for the coming week and the ingredient list for both families. They go buy the food and drop it off to me for the week.

So far weekly I have cut my grocery bill from $120.00 to $50 - 60 per week. The families I cook for have said that this actually saves them money to as it's cheaper than eating out.

Source: I am sure I am not the first one to think this up but it actually just came to me. I didn't get it from a source.

Cheap and Healthier Ice Blocks

Make up a litre or more of nesquick or milo and milk (I put an extra teaspoon per cup), pour this into small freezer proof containers and freeze them. When they are ready, use a teaspoon to scrape it out. My kids love them. They last longer than ordinary ice blocks, plus you know what goes into them. You can also use cordial or fruit juice.

Product Review: Powerade Zero

Product: Powerade Zero

Model: 49000-05071

Manufacturer: Coca-Cola Co.

Cost: sells for less than $1 per bottle and less with coupons!!

There is a beverage out on the market now, similar to Gatorade or regular Powerade (which are both full of sugar), it's called "Powerade Zero". Anyone not wanting all those sugars, can drink, even diabetics as it has Splenda in it. It comes in a 32 oz. bottle and can be purchased as single bottles or in multipacks. They have it in grape, strawberry, berry. Powerade Zero also has the potassium in it, that our bodies need. I keep a few bottles of this on hand, for the muscle spasms and leg cramps, one of my diabetes pills causes me to have.

Bark Mulch is Molding

I recently put down weed blocker and then covered it with a mixture of small bark wood chip mulch and cocoa shell mulch. There are large areas that look covered in mold. I went to break it up and it "dusted the air". Is this dangerous? The area is dewy in the morning and doesn't get more than 5 hours of direct sunlight, if it's even a sunny day. How can I prevent/remove the moldy areas?

Outer Walls of Trailer Getting Wet

We have lived in a trailer for 2 years and every winter we have been here the outside walls in the closet area and now to the front of the mobile is wet and showing small signs of mold. It only does it as it gets cold. The windows also steam up and get some black on them as well. The bathroom ceiling also gets small yellow spots on it.

Any idea what would cause all of this? the skirting on the trailer is very tight and there is no air flow under it, could this be the cause? Nothing like this happens in the summer and it is always the outside walls. Under the trailer is always damp as well, they have the dryer vented under their.

Washer Not Getting Dust Out of Clothes

Top load washing machine not getting dust and debris out. I have done a search and figured out that it is probably an uncleared drain. It is draining the water, but my clothes could be more wrung out I suppose. I have removed the drain pipe from the back and all seems clear. It looks as though I need to find my way into the inner workings of this Maytag stacking "heavy duty" washer (older model). Now that I look at it, it has a "self clean washer filter".

Any clues as to the best way to go about this? I am often very dusty from work and I have animals. My clothes come out with dust smears all over them and at least as many animal hairs as when I put them in the washer! I can even give some of my (clean) clothes a shake and have dust poof out! Thanks in advance!
