Nubbins the Cat

This is Nubbins. She is only about 4 months old. She came to us while i was in the hospital having surgery. My hubby opened the back door and there she was. Probably not much older then 6-8 weeks. She got her name because she only has a nubbin for a tail. We don't know how she lost it or if she was born that way, but she is the most loving kitty i have ever had. She is an odd slate gray color and she has bright orange eyes. Beautiful kitty.

Today's Tips

Cook By The Seasons

Always cook with the seasons and sales. It's the law of supply and demand. If a grocery item is on sale, the quality will be high, and the price low. For example: asparagus in the spring, corn and watermelon in the summer, apples and squash in the fall. Buy out of season and pay much higher prices for lesser quality .

Cleaning The Toilet Tips

It's not fun, but it has to be done. Tips for cleaning your toilet. Post your ideas.

Use a cup of bleach to clean toilet bowls. It's cheaper and more effective than expensive products made for that job.

Pet Stain Removal

To remove cat or dog urine stain and odor, this is the only thing I have ever found that really works. Mix 2 tsp. of dish liquid with 2 tsp. of baking soda into a bowl or pitcher with 16 oz. of hydrogen peroxide. Pour it directly on the spot for odor removal. Let dry naturally. Odor will be completely gone. To find spots, use a black light.

I have used this recipe in my carpet cleaning machine when my cat had a 'bathroom problem' and I wasn't sure where all he urinated. Do not save the mixture, use it all. I have spent endless dollars on products and carpet cleaners, including professionals. None of them work. This does!

If there is a stain from feces, try to remove when wet. Wipe up debris with washcloth, spray on shout stain remover to soften, rub until stain disappears.

By A. Cope

Editor's Note: As with any cleaning solution, it's best to pretest it on an inconspicuous piece of carpet or a carpet remnant.

Thawing Meat

Tips for thawing meat. Post your ideas.

When I thaw out meat I put it in a plastic grocery bag and then on a plate. That way if it leaks out of the package it doesn't get all over my fridge!

Cleaning Your Dryer Filter - Dryer Sheet Build-Up

Cleaning your filter screen for your dryer will help it run longer and more efficiently. Take your filter to the sink. Run water through the screen. If it holds water, it has a coating left on from your dryer sheets. Take an old toothbrush and wash it with hot soapy water to remove the residue. Rinse throughly. This will help your dryer run better. Read about it here at this site.

Credit Card Interest You DIDN'T See Coming

If your like most Americans than you have at least one credit card. Most Americans unfortunately struggle from paycheck to paycheck (which is why a lot of us are here) and can only afford a minimum payment on their credit cards. But they pay religiously and are never late.

So how come their interest rate just MAXED out at over 20%?! Their is a law stating that a credit card company may raise their interest rate on anyone who makes a late payment to ANY creditor at any time. Even if they haven't missed a payment to the credit card company themselves!

It's legal and it's happening all over the place. When you see that great new introductory interest rate on a card make sure you read ALL the fine print on the back next time and look for the Universal Default Law.

Hopefully you haven't suffered from this (fortunately we haven't) but many have. Be very careful and examine everything you sign your name to. Or you'll spend the next 20 years just paying the finance charge and never even touching the principal balance.

Saving Money on Hand Soap

Tips for saving money on hand soap. Post your ideas below!

Shampoo Leftovers

I always use more conditioner than shampoo so I end up with a small amount of shampoo left when the conditioner bottle is empty. I keep a pump bottle by the kitchen sink for washing hands and I just add that dollop of leftover shampoo to it, with a little bit of water to thin it down a bit. This way I don't have to buy hand soap and don't have to waste that leftover shampoo.

Inexpensive Shelving

My 10 yr old daughter loves horses. I just primed, painted, and painted her bedroom. I hung a cute border (in the middle of the wall instead of top, her eye-level). Now, as I am attempting to put her furninture back into her pretty new room, it all covers the border!

She has a daybead, nightstand, dresser w/mirror, and two large bookshelves that held her collection of horses. They range from the stuffed ones, to very expensive collectible ceramic, glass, etc figurines of horses.

Does anyone have ideas on inexpensive shelving that could be mounted directly to the wall, maybe without sides so her border can be seen as well as the paint?
