Butler's Isabella Grace (Boston Terrier)

AKA Baby Bella is 8 weeks old and is a Boston Terrier.

She thinks she is a big dog in a small dog's body. She is doing great house breaking! She loves her bones, her pink blanket her "grandma" made her, and her red dog!

I have wanted a dog for 6 years after my beloved Tea Cup Poodle Molly Joe died. My husband did not like Molly Joe and Molly Joe did not like my husband. So after 6 years of begging and pleading my husband gave in. He loves her too! He told me she is such a good dog nothing like Molly Joe!

Use Christmas Door Foil on Windows to Reflect Summer Heat

Window tint film is very expensive. I had an inspiration; what I call, a "light bulb moment". Having lived in Florida for years, it was not uncommon to see windows covered with aluminum foil. I used my Christmas door foil, to cover my the windows. It is much more economical having bought it 50% off at an after Christmas sale. My a/c runs less and my electric bill is about 1/3 less than last year.

Travel Packing Tips

I hate packing! There's so much to do before a trip that this chore is just an added nuisance!

So those items that will ALWAYS go on trips with me, I just have them specifically designated for trips, instead of packing them when the time comes. I just store these extras in my luggage!

  1. I use ziplock sandwich bags for most of them that are labeled:

    • First Aid: (four or five bandaids, a teenie bag of Ibuprofen, antibiotic cream, etc.)
    • Beverages: (two or three tea packets, two or three coffee packets, a travel container of Equal, powdered cream packets, etc.)
    • Makeup: (I try to find tiny versions of my regular makeup, if possible. Lipstick, a smaller bottle of foundation --who needs a whole bottle for 4 days!, eyeshadow, mascara, etc.)
    • Shower/Hygiene: (a tiny toothpaste, tiny shampoo/conditioner, tiny hair gel bottle, etc.)
    • Electronics: (iPod charger, USB cord, phone charger, camera charger and battery, headphones, etc.) (These are specifically designated for traveling. They're duplicates of the household USB cord and iPod charger, etc.)
  2. I also have designated "travel undies" and "travel socks" and a "travel cap" and "travel sunglasses", etc. They stay in the luggage and are only used on trips. So no packing of them is necessary!
  3. If I find that I'm not going to use something on this particular trip (I need 5 pairs of undies on a week-long trip; only 2 on a weekend trip), I put them in a drawer specifically designated for "travel stuff".
  4. Then, when I return from a trip, I unpack IMMEDIATELY (if I don't, the luggage sits exactly where I set it down, for weeks!). I refill anything that needs it (shampoo, pills, bandaids, etc.), wash anything that will go back into the luggage (undies/socks) and I'm ready to go in a flash on my next trip!
And I'll have confidence that I haven't forgotten anything, because it was already there to begin with! (like headphones!)

Recycle Mascara Wands

Don't throw away your old mascara wands! Wash them well and keep a few on hand - they are great little helpers for:

Getting a "fuzz" out of eyelashes when you can't get it with your fingers.

Cleaning gunk around the faucet.

Getting dirt off of mushrooms.

Cleaning around computer keys.

Besides their usefulness for separating lashes, and brushing eyebrows, these are nice little tools to have around!

Preserving Game Boards and Pieces

When my family purchases new games with game boarde, before they play the first game, I use wide, clear packing tape and reinforce corners of both the bottom and top of the game box, and any inserts inside the box. I also place a strip of tape down the back side of the folded gameboard to give it extra strength - no more broken boards or untidy, ruined boxes! I then place as many as needed ziplock bags into the box to store games pieces after use. This really extends the life of the game for many generations! Games are expensive these days - try it!

Use Sponge for Child's Paint Holder

Cut an opening in the center of a sponge and insert a paint or glue container in the hole. The sponge will absorb any drips and will also keep the container from tipping and spilling. This is a great way to prevent sticky messes.

Product Review: Cetaphil DailyAdvanced Ultra Hydrating Lotion

Product: Cetaphil DailyAdvanced Ultra Hydrating Lotion

Manufacturer: Cetaphil

Cost: $10.00

A little information first. I have a "almost" 3 year old who has had eczema since birth (we came home from the hospital with it) and is allergic to acrylic fiber, perfumes, some dyes, and ants. If she gets a sinus infection, she breaks out in hives from head (literally) to her feet. We have to use Cetaphil water-less bath liquid soap because she only gets to have a real bath once a week. The rest of the time we rub her down with the water-less soap and wipes. Our lotions and ointments run about $15.00 every week.

This is a product my daughter's dermatologist suggested we use for her eczema and allergy break-outs. We used to have to apply Aquaphor first thing in the morning (6:30 AM) and at bedtime, Lubriderm at 10 AM and 4 PM, and Aveeno at 1 PM and 7 PM as a regular routine to keep her skin hydrated, but with the Cetaphil, I use it ONCE when she wakes up and that's it. Her skin is so soft and smooth that when we went to the allergist for a check-up, she couldn't believe how great her skin was.

The lotion is kind of expensive, but we only buy 1 tube a month. This is with me using it for three days to heal my cracked feet. I went to Cetaphil.com and got a $2.00 off coupon for the second bottle so I only had to pay $8.00 at Walmart.

Eat Your Potatoes, Peelings and All

When I peel potatoes, I leave a small amount of the potato on the peeling and place the pieces in a bowl of cold water. I then drain them and pat dry. I place the peelings on a greased pan in a single layer. Sprinkle the peelings with garlic, parsley, paprika, onion powder or any seasoning you may like. Mrs. Dash is good too. Bake at 350 degrees until brown. Serve with sour cream, melted cheese, salsa or any kind of dip that you prefer. You can also sprinkle the peelings with shredded cheeses when baking. Delicious!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A man was in bad shape. He constantly gasped for breath and his eyes bulged. The doctors could not determine the cause of the problem and didn't give him long to live. So, he decided to live it up.

Withdrawing all of his money from the bank, he went on a shopping spree. His last stop was at the most expensive haberdashery in the city. He pointed out a dozen silk shirts. He wore a size fourteen. The clerk said, "Your neck looks bigger than fourteen. You need a sixteen."

The man said, "I know my size. I want them in a fourteen."

The clerk shook his head and said, "I'll get them for you, but I want to warn you, if you wear a fourteen you'll gasp all day and your eyes will bulge."

I've been searching for an insole to use in Crocs sandals that would enable me to refrain from using hosiery. Found "Dr. Scholl's for her Sport insole," approx. $10, Kroger grocery store. Yard Talk: Dirt Simple Tips for Natural Yard Care

This site is about gardening in Seattle or the Pacific Northwest but there are a lot of good tips that would apply other places. One that is of particular good use everywhere is: Episode 11: "Healthy Home Companion". It shows why using chemicals on your yard, especially if you have children or pets, is not a good idea.

Yard Talk Site

Each episode is a little movie to watch about the subject. It requires a free Real Audio player for which they provide a link. I checked to see if they had these on YouTube but they do not, at least at the time of this posting. Even if you can't watch the movies or don't have time, there are a lot of good tips on the page of each episode.

Keep Birds Out of the Garden

Question:

I have birds that are eating the tops off of my plants in my garden, how do I get rid of them?

Stayathomemomof2 from Muscoda, WI http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf157853.tip.html

Answer:

Stayhomemomof2,

Bird watching can be an enjoyable pastime, unless of course, it means watching them swoop in and make a shambles out of your garden plants. Here are a few things to try:

Barriers

Netting or Fencing: Use specially designed plastic bird netting (available at garden stores) to drape over the mature plants birds are pecking at. Protect newly planted seeds by planting them in indented furrows and laying a strip of chicken wire over each row. Hold the wire down using small rocks or sticks.

Shade cloths or floating row covers: Shade cloths are usually placed over rows of plants and secured with stakes or supports, to protect them from intense summer heat (usually used on cool season crops). The cloths come in varying "shade percentages", each indicating how much light it allows in. Floating row covers are somewhat similar to shade cloths. They let light and moisture in, while protecting plants from insects, birds, and small animals. They are usually draped over plants or secured with stakes or canes.

Cages: Build a quasi cage using small twigs or branches (or leftover fencing) around individual plants.

Scare Tactics (sound, movement, & light)

Pseudo Predators: Scarecrows & mannequins make good garden sentries, plus they add a whimsical touch to the garden. In order for them to be effective, you need to move them from time to time and change their look. You can also find large inflatable balls with menacing eyes printed on the front at some home and garden centers (or online). Try fake plastic owls or making a faux predatory bird by sticking feathers into a large potato and hanging it from a nearby tree.

Reflective objects: Hang shiny things from nearby trees, stakes, or from the plants themselves. Try CDs, aluminum foil, small ornaments covered in mirrors (think disco balls) or reflective streamers. All of these tend to spin and flutter when the wind blows and bounce light around.

Noisemakers: Things that make noise AND move are also effective deterrents. Cut up an old detergent bottle to make a pinwheel that spins and whirrs on a stake.

Remember, nothing will deter birds forever, so a variety of tactics are usually needed. Pay attention this year to the plants they seem to be favoring. Then next year you will be able to put deterrents in place before they start to look for food.

Good luck!

Ellen

Summer's Bounty
By Debra Frick

I don't know about you but I love shopping at the Farmer's market. I have a small garden but it is not enough to feed the seven people who live in my house so I do my quantity shopping at the farmer's market. My mother did not can or preserve food in any way so I had to learn this on my own trial and error. I found that freezing food was easier for me and since I am always feeding a crowd around here that it also was the most economical for me. I also dehydrate vegetables to use in soups and stews through the winter. This year, Miller's Farm has been having some great sales at the market, I can get about 50-60 pounds of produce organically grown for around $15.00.

So for all the newbies out there that need information on how to preserve some of summer's bounty, I thought I would share some of my all time favorite recipes. These recipes freeze well and can be used for a variety of things. Also I buy things like mushrooms and celery, two things that I cannot get at the market when they are on sale and dehydrate them for use all year long. All measurements are approximate, as some people may not use salt or the specific spice that I do. The best way to do these recipes is to set aside a Saturday and cook all day. I always freeze in the freezer Ziploc bags, as they will lie flat in my freezer so they take up less room.

Store Sheets Inside Pillowcases

When I fold sheets, I place one pillowcase between the two folded sheets. I then place that inside the second pillowcase. Very neat and easy to stack. No more looking for the pillow cases, or sheets sliding around in the linen closet.

I am going to adopt a yorkie-poo puppy in September. I want to know how to house train it to a litter box. I have an old sheltie now and he was house trained to outside when I got him. Looking for Insoles for Crocs

I've been searching for an insole to use in Crocs sandals that would enable me to refrain from using hosiery. Found "Dr. Scholl's for her Sport insole," approx. $10, Kroger grocery store. Has a bamboo cloth cover on top. Quite helpful, but I am wondering if there is a better solution out there. "Footsmart" sells boiled wool insoles for this purpose, but as I am allergic to wool (but not in all its forms), I don't want to take any chances.

Happy Gardening,
