Mother's Day Flower "Cake"

Materials

  • 2 inch by 4 inch styrofoam
  • 6 individual silk roses
Directions

Pull apart and cut petals and glue to outside of rim until covered. Keep all leaves from silk rose stems you just used and glue to top. Add rose bud on top. I used a contrasting rose for top for more impact.

Sadie (Beagle Mix)

Sadie is 6 years old. We aren't sure what breed she is. Some say beagle and basset, some say german shepherd and basset/beagle. We don't know. We saved Sadie from the Humane Society when she was just a puppy. Sadie loves to bark at the bunnies in the front yard. She loves "treats" and loves to converse with the dogs next door.

This picture shows Sadie lounging in our living room. She was laying there one morning and I said "Why don't you go back to bed?" and she got up and went back to our bedroom and laid on her big pillow on our floor. She is very loving! Gets along great with our 5 month old twins. If they are in their cribs and start crying, she runs in and looks in to check on them.

Today's Tips:

Use Wash Water To Flush

Here's a tip to save money on water I bet you have never thought of. Keep a dish pan in your sink and after you use the loo, but before you flush, wash your hands in the sink, (over the dish pan) and use that water to flush with. It usually gets everything down and you save water on a flush. It's one of the ways to pinch pennies without feeling the pinch. If you don't want guests to see the dish pan, simply remove it and hide it under the sink before they come.

Free Sample Websites

More free sample sites! I used that Walmart site from a while back (now on my bookmark bar). I told my mom and she found me some more sites in one of her books! I thought I would share the ones that worked for me!

Have a happy day! If I find more, I will be sure to share!

Beware Of Online Banking Account Balances

Beware that if you have online banking, the balance may not be accurate. I have yet to have it explained to me clearly but lately, in the PM the night before, I had a plus balance and the pending items were some transformed into NSF, despite an incoming automatic deposit.

I was just told "keep better records" and I am becoming increasingly aware that the online balance is only approximate (and computerized banking practices seem to have changed in favor of the bank and getting fees) so I will be much more careful in the future!

You Know You Are Living In 2007 When...

You know you are living in 2007 when...

1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.

4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is they don't have e-mail addresses.

6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.

11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )

12. You're reading this and nodding and laughing.

13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

15. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list.

And now you are laughing at yourself.

By imaqt1962 from Illinois

Editor's Note: I noticed that there was no #9 and fixed it while editing. When I got to the end, I fixed it back but I had a big sideways smile on my face doing it!

Dry Clothes Outside

I picked up two wooden dryer racks from yard sales. It is just as easy to hang most of your wash loads out on a porch, and couldn't we all use fresh air? Our power bill dropped substantially when the weather warmed enough to hang outside. I fold them straight from the wooden dryers. It's worth the effort!

Use Apples to Ripen Avocados

Guacamole and chips is a traditional Mexican snack. If your avocados need to ripen quickly, put them in a paper bag with an apple. The ethylene gas released by the apple will hasten the ripening of the avocados.

Recycling Magnets for Photos

My daughter recycles my refrigerator magnets! She takes one of my magnets I've picked up from a local business and uses a gluestick to attach family pictures, etc.! She uses magnets that are from stores that have closed, magnets from businesses we used to frequent before we moved, and magnets with school calendars from previous school years. It's a great way to recycle and I have beautiful pictures of family members and furkids to look at instead of businesses I no longer use!

Share Gardening Duties With A Neighbor

If your gardening skills are minimal, try asking a neighbor or friend to co-garden with you to not only cut costs but also the work! If you don't have a place to garden, perhaps try looking for someone who does who wouldn't mind a "helper".

Watch Out For "Vampires" - Energy Eating Appliances

Unplug appliances that are "instant on" appliances, such as TV, phone charger, etc. when not in use. These are "vampire" appliances that have electric current going through them even when not in use, causing unnecessary charges on electric bill.

Memory Jar For Mother's Day

For Mother's Day some years ago, my siblings and I (all grown) made our mom a Memory Jar. We found a beautiful ceramic jar for under $10, which we filled with special memories. Each of us had our own color paper (blue for my brother, pink for my sister, yellow for myself). We cut the paper into several small pieces, wrote a memory on each slip of paper, rolled into little scrolls and tied each with a coordinating piece of ribbon. Mom cried at the notes, and proudly displays the jar on her hutch.

Meal Ideas for a Flight Attendant

I am currently a international flight attendant. I bring my own food on the plane since I don't like the airplane food we offer. I fly international, so I always have at least a 24 hour layover in some foreign countries. Because it is expensive in europe, I like to cook my own food but I am running out of ideas. I need ideas on what to make to eat on the plane, (usually around 7 hour flights), my layovers, and on my way back home (again around 7 hours). Can anyone help me please?

Cigarette Smoke Smell on Fleece Fabric

I just received a huge bag of fleece for free (I made cat and dog toys at home for extra income). Although, I'm beyond grateful to the person who gave it to me, she neglected to tell me she smokes... a lot! The fleece is saturated with the smell of smoke. I need a safe way to clean/get rid of the fleece smell without ruining the fleece itself. I generally don't wash the fleece because it pills.

Thanks so much in advance for any help you guys can offer!

Toilet Planter

I put our old toilet out to plant stuff in this summer (nobody wants it). But I noticed after the 3 days of hard rain the toilet part is half full of water! how can I make sure it drains somehow? The back part drains out of the bottom but the seat part looks like it could root rot anything I put in there. It's half FULL of water.

Vacuums That Last

I am looking to purchase a new vacuum. I currently have a Bissell upright, and after a year it has worn out. It has no suction, and I have cleaned all of the filters and it made no difference. I went through the owners manual and can't figure out what's wrong. It is now making a rattling noise. I don't know if it is worth the money to repair. But I think I spent like $150 on it! Grrr!

I am willing to pay more for a vacuum that will actually last a few years. I am thinking of an Oreck or a Dyson. Does anyone have one of these, and how do you like them?

Thanks!

Apartment Building With Shared Laundry

I live in an apartment building with shared washers and dryers. One thing I have noticed since moving here is that my whites are turning yellow when I wash them. I've tried bleach and Borax to no avail. A friend said he had that problem in college and his mother told him to use less detergent. I tried that and that didn't work either.

As far as I know there are no issues with the water (it's city water) and I believe the pipes are sound (not rusty). I was looking here for suggestions on getting our whites back to being white and once we do, how do we keep them that way?

Thanks,

3 Year Old Girl Potty Training Advice

I need potty training ideas for an almost 3 year old little girl. She lets me know when she needs to have a BM in the potty, but will not let me know when she needs to pee. She has no problem going in her diaper, and if I take off her diaper and just put underwear or pants on her she just goes and doesn't care about her wet pants. I don't want my furniture to smell like pee. Any suggestions? We give her one smartie piece for each pee and an animal cracker for each BM. Thanks!

Cleaning a Coffee Maker

What is the proper way to clean a stovetop coffee maker? I believe that it is recommended to simply rinse it with hot water everytime after you use it and let it dry so that the coffee maker gets conditioned by the coffee? Reason I'm asking is that I used to do this all along, but it seems that my coffee maker is getting some black stuff build up on the bottom that looks like mold.

Thanks!

Saving Money on Preschool Activities
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

Daycare is an enormous expense, but preschool isn't any cheaper. We were lucky enough to have family members watch our son in his early years, but we soon learned that the transition from a family home to kindergarten would be a tough one. We decided to enroll him in preschool to ease the transition, but the cost of preschool is as much as daycare. Instead, we found some cheaper social activities that would prepare him for kindergarten without paying the price of daycare facilities.
