Well to start, we live in a 1 and 1/2 bedroom apartment and we are on Section 8 rent assistance. I am disabled and our income consists of my $631 a month SSI check in the bank. My Frugal Life

I have nine children all under the age of 13 years old. We shop at thrift stores only for clothes and shoes, socks, etc. We sew, too. I have a sewing machine I got one birthday from my wealthy parents. We don't wear makeup, as we are all female. The baby who is 1 year old is nursed by breast. We get food benefits of $150 a month. I have a Sam's Club account and we buy our food there as well. My children get hand-me-downs from relatives and gifts.

We use the library for everything; Internet, reading, music of all kinds as we have an antique record player that works, Newspaper, other things that help me stretch the budget. We also have Internet at home for $5.47 a month from peoplepc.com. My oldest daughter has a babysitting job for extra money to help offset some cost of teen living. Our rent is $198 a month on Section 8.

I do laundry at a free place in town for people with disabilities like me. I have no live-in husband to help, but I do have a husband that lives separate from us. He helps too. He lives in the same town we do.

I clip tons of coupons for everything else we use in life and I am proud to say I save 60% off using coupons.

Our Medical is from Minnesota Medical Assistance. It's free with a small copay for prescription medication.

We take the bus on a family pass in town, so we don't own a car. Buses are fine for this family. It's the cheapest way to travel.

We have no pets that require extra care. Fish.

We also fish to eat at a river nearby our apartment. It's good eating. We buy a lot of non-name brand food.

We have a strict budget of $20 dollars a month for phone.

We use Excel Energy Assistance for winter. We wear heavy wool at night and turn down the heater.

My girls sleep on one mattress, the baby and I on another.

We don't have cable. Just reception and a DVD player for .99 rental movies at the Movie rental place. This is enough for us.

We do everything free that we can for entertainment and don't rent a lot of movies. We also own a VCR, radio, and a few cheap movies at home.

Well, this is my frugal life for my family. God Bless.

Tani Raxy from Dilworth, MN

I find your story impossible to believe. You cannot have that many kids in that apartment and be on Section 8.

I have relatives on SSI they are not allowed to have anyone staying in there gov. assisted apartment for more than a few days. I can tell you feel pride for the way you are managing you family. But you are raising girls.....think of how difficult this will be for them as the years go by; especially if you keep cranking out more and more baby girls. Are you sure you want the exact same life for them.

Also Medicaid pays for birth control or sterilization.
GOOD LUCK!!!!

You seem to be doing a fine job with what you have but as far as Section 8 housing where I live, there is no way they would allow 10 people to live in a 1 1/2 bedroom apartment, whether you are all the same gender or not! They would require at least a 3 bedroom and one could still pay as little as $198 for rent. If I were you I would definitely check into the possibility of getting into a larger place as well as getting more food stamps for your family. Teenagers eat ALOT, even girls. Best of luck to you.

I, too, find this hard to believe. Why hasn't CPS taken these kids away? Section 8 in my state would not pay for a home that is not suitable. By the way, what exactly is a 1/2 bedroom???? It's a bedroom or it's not. Theres no such thing as 1/2! If your bills are that high, your food stamps should be higher than that! I know people with 3 kids who work and bring in like $300 worth. It sounds to me like your cheating the system. And then to use God's name at the end of the essay! What a disgrace to those of us who are living frugally by neccessity!

Did I read this correctly? Eight girls are sleeping on one mattress? Nine children under 13, and the youngest is a one year old? One baby keeps an able-bodied mother on her toes!

Good for you! I am also disabled and have had similiar problems but I have always worked from home managing to avoid a government check. I have worked from home as a telemarketer for at least 15 years for a reputable company and then when I became too sick to even do that I crocheted and sold at flea markets and wrote articles for at least a few hundred a month. I would try to find a source of employment so that you can supplement your check. Also churches will help you in an emergency if you run into a problem. Finally, what are you going to do when the girls are in their teens? They are going to have alot of trouble sharing one room. Another thing, you say your youngest is one year old. You need to consider abstaining from sex or birth control because you are very fertile and really can't afford any more children. It's really not fair to the children. I made the decision to only have one child because I knew I would not have the finances to care for more kids properly, no matter how much love I have to give.""

I just find this story a little difficult to believe. 9 kids in a 1 and 1/2 bedroom apt? that would never fly in Texas where I live, how did you manage that? and also the thing with the husband that doesn't live with you? does anyone check out these stories to make sure their legit? I find this one a little bizarre

Nine children and disabled? Will your wealthy parents not help you? No way would I have a husband across town not helping me financially with those children. You could start a small home business, as simple as baking or sewing to supplement your SS; you are allowed to make a certiain amount each year when you are on it.

What an inspiration
Most families think they MUST have cable TV, 2 cars, eat in restaurants, have a dishwasher, clothes dryer and name brand clothing. Thanks for doing the RIGHT thing by your family and living within your means. My prayers are that you are happy, healthy and raise responsible daughters...who will also make the most of their situation! Good Luck!!

I was wondering do you have a freecycle in your area? People put in requests for things they need and also post things they have that someone might need. It's all free and easy to do. There are freecycles in every state.

Necessity certainly is the mother of invention. Good for you for coming up with ways to make this work for you! One other option for entertainment: if you have a YMCA in your town, I'm sure you could get a family membership for free with your income. This would be a great way to get the girls moving! Just a thought. God Bless!
