B.C. (Baby Cat) ThriftyFun's Office Cat

B.C. is a real lover. She likes to cuddle up with anyone around. She tends to put her claws out when she gets excited about being petted which has made us think about getting her some leather mittens.

She moved from my house into the office where she is very happy being the only cat and getting all the attention. She is 14 years old, a bit on the pleasantly plump side and loves her food.

Preventing Static Shock

To prevent static shock, place two tablespoons of fabric softener in one quart of water. Put this in a spray bottle and mist the carpet in your automobile and also in your home.

Stretch Your Meals To Save Time And Money

If you're wondering what to fix for a meal, with or without meat, prepare the dish that will produce the most servings. Stretch your food dollars. You could fry up 4 hamburgers from a 1 pound package of ground meat such as beef, turkey or chicken, for exactly 1 meal. But, if you prepare a casserole with it, you can serve more people and possibly have leftovers for another meal, to eat later in the week, or to take in your lunch, or to put in the freezer for an easy night's supper.

Christmas Ads for Wrapping Paper

I find myself saving nice Christmas art from advertisements and special newspaper sections and brochures, etc. - which I can cut out and use for wrapping paper! (if the gift is small - use white computer paper and glue on the cut outs).

Information on HPV

I don't know if many women are aware of this so I thought I would put it on the site. I have found out that the HPV (human papilloma virus that all the commercials are talking about) is actually preventable. I was astounded when my doctor told me this.

Grilling Food for the Freezer

Grilling outside today! Yes, in 50 degrees Brrr! I'm grilling wings, burgers and hot dogs. Then I freeze in bags to be used later. I can pull out what I want, still frozen. I put the microwave on defrost and have that grilled flavor to enjoy when its snowing out there. By cooking several things at once, I also save on my grill's propane. Enjoy.

Musty Smell on Clothing

I guess this would come under the heading of cleaning? Anyway, I have a very small closet space in my room, therefore I have to store my clothes in my basement in a closet during the off seasons. Recently, when it was time to switch at the changing of the seasons, I noticed that some of the clothing that had been in the basement closet smelled musty. I can't seem to get rid of it just by washing. Does anybody have any idea how to get the musty smell out of my clothes? Is there any hope at all? I appreciate any help that anyone can give me. Thanks!

Daycare Activities

A friend works at a daycare center and has kids ages 10 to 13 for two hours after their regular school. This place offers only babysitting, not crafts. Do you have any suggestions as to things they could do that might keep the kids happy? The director might spring money for the occasional organized activity for the kids.

The center is not even in TX, so it's not near my city.

Rash on My Elbows

Does anyone have any ideas to help with a skin rash that I've had around my eyebrows for a year now? I've tried night creams, (Mary Kay, Olay) A&D Ointment, AmLactin (from the pharmacy) and a high-priced sample from my doc that also didn't work. It starts flaking, I scrub the dead skin off, apply ointment, then the process starts over. It feels like leather, itches and looks awful.
I want to cure this before I go to a dermatologist!

Any ideas?

Homemade Dryel Cloths

Wow, I think I am asking for a new "homemade" recipe! I love the Dryel system for refreshing my "dry clean only" fabrics (wool, nylon, acetate, rayon, silk, etc.) But has anyone tried to make their own dry cleaning sheets? They must be very damp, and placed in with the clothes in the Dryel bag (or similar, I guess.) Mine is fabric with the zipper, so it lasts longer than the original nylon. I will be experimenting and post here, but please add your own experiences and input!

A plastic spoon fell on the heating coil in my dishwasher during the drying cycle and melted it. There is now a burned smell in the washer and in my plastic dishes. How can I remove the smell? I did manage to get all the melted plastic out and ran a vinegar wash. It still has a lingering odor. Help!

Cleaning a Down Jacket

I have a white down jacket that I only wore once and left in the closet. This year it has become yellowish, it is no longer white. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how to get it white again. Will it whiten out if I bring it to the dry cleaner? Please let me know. Thank you.

Bubbles in Veneer

Well, since the Iron method worked so wonderfully for removing the white rings on my table, I now wonder if there is any magic that will remove, or, more accurately, re-adhere the veneer to that same table, where it has bubbled up in some small places. Does anyone know any way to get those bubbles back down, flat, onto the table? Thanks in advance for any help.. Have a wonderful day!
