Recycled Shredder for Toiletries

I had this little shredder for a while and it began to show it's age. I painted it and used it for earrings and my make up brushes. It's perfect with my black and red bathroom!

N-JOY

Approximate Time: 1 hour drying time

Supplies:

  • Old shredder
  • Krylon or generic spray paint
  • protective covering for surface.

Instructions:

You can get a new shredder from the Dollar Tree. Or, find one from a second hand place or use your own. Paint it the color of your bathroom, or leave white or silver if you like it rustic.

When done, simply hang earrings from the holes and put your cosmetic brushes (combs, etc) in from the top.

You could also hang it and use it for necklaces as well.

Recycle Plastic Lemons as a Vase

Here is another recycle picture. I emptied this little lemon juice container and thought of using it for my kitchen counter with a few fresh flowers from the yard.I usually have something blooming year round. So a bloom or two brightens my day.

Chicks (Deer Mouse)

She comes to Chicks, I don't know why, she just seems to like it. She is almost two years old. When she was a baby, taking pictures of her was easy. But now that she is older, she doesn't like to sit still for long, but with a tripod it can be done! Chicks is a Deer Mouse.

Radar (Papillon)

Radar is 3 years and 2 weeks old. He is a Papillon. We bought him at 12 weeks from a breeder in East Texas. He likes to jump, run in circles and does many tricks.

He is the smartest pet we have ever had. I will always have a Papillon due to their darling personalities and brilliance!

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Form a Mommy Group

Form a "mommy " group. Invite all your friends, co-workers, church groups, or school mates. Take turns having play dates at each other homes: Mon, Tue, Wed, water day at my house, bring your kids, Thur and Fri, I get to take my children to your house for summer volleyball camp. Next week, the kids go to the neighbors for craft mania. We do this each and every week so that all the moms can have 1 - 3 days off or more depending on how many moms are involved.

Supplement Your Nutritional Supplements With Samples

I have been working through glucosamine samples that I have gotten from internet offers (Check out freestufftimes.com for great updated tips for freebies.) I also pick up samples at my health food store, which I prefer for that reason. You can use them for traveling or for emergencies when you are running out - or just to stretch out your supplements and chip away a little at their cost!

Often the supplements are unusual ones, so it allows you to experiment with different ingredients in your health regime. And remember to read those labels, if you get a dose in one pill, you can fore go it in another taken at the same time, or you can combine the dosages!

Bird Feeders Attract Raccoons

If you live near a wooded area that has raccoons, don't put out bird feeders! We found the seeds were attracting raccoons to our yard which endangers our cat! Thankfully, once we removed the bird feeders the raccoons went elsewhere for food. They are also attracted to my neighbors apple trees (even though he has 2 large dogs!) These raccoons have no fear!

Homemade Pullout Shelves for Cupboards

My cupboards are very large and deep, so it's difficult to reach or see and then retrieve, what is on the shelves toward the back. I found that medium to large cardboard box lids, plastic lids up to 4 inch depth - even containers of all sizes work.

Place the items on the lid that you have placed on the shelf and pull the front edge of the lid toward you. Voila! You now have a sliding, pull-out shelf that costs next to nothing and you can see and retrieve items with greater ease!

Try a few sizes and settle on the one that works best. I found sizes that use up most of the shelf space, or only what you want for that shelf.

I used this technique with smaller lids and containers when we were full time RVers.

Water Plants With Leftover Ice

When watering indoor plants, try using ice cubes instead of water. They melt slowly, letting the soil absorb it better. This may not work for all plants, test first.

Use Leftover Soap Pieces to Make Homemade Laundry Soap

What to do with leftover soap pieces (a few pieces)

  1. I use my leftover soap to make homemade laundry soap. In a large container, I use a half gallon cup with a handle, fill with very hot water, shave the leftover soap into water, add 1/2 cup washing soda (available in most stores) 1/4 cup of 20 mule team borax. If you have hard water, add a few drops of tea tree oil, and stir until all is dissolved. Cover with top. Cools down to a jelly, add more water if too thick.

Use 3 or 4 scoops for large load.

Depending on family size, the washing soda and borax should make quite a few batches, saving you a lot of money.

  2. You can also collect left over pieces in a small plastic tub - rectangular best. I call it hobo soap. From craft store, buy a container of vegetable base or goats milk soap base, cut base into chunks and melt in microwave, I use a medium size measuring cup 30 sec. at a time until melted. Add essential oil of your choice, stir, pour over left over pieces- let cool, release from mold and slice.

Source: I learned from instructions in the ebook, The Handcrafter's Companion at http://squidoo.com/thehandcrafterscompanion.

Also bought a book on essential oils and used tips from other soap makers. A true crafter is always willing to share their recipes and I am happy to do so.

Central Air Conditioner Reviews

My husband and I are in the market for a new heat pump/air conditioner unit (central unit). We have four estimates and they are all for different brands: Lennox, Trane, Carrier, and American Standard. I can't find any worthwhile reviews online, so I thought I'd ask the fine readers of ThriftyFun if you have any reviews or suggestions from your own air conditioner experience. Any reviews are greatly appreciated! Thanks .

Advice on Buying a New Washer

I am going to have to purchase a new washer soon, as mine is on it's last leg. It makes a horrible clunking sound when it changes gears to rinse and spin dry. Any advise on purchasing a new washer would be appreciated. I do not need a big fancy one as I'm widowed and it's just me. Please tell me what brand you have and why or why you do not like it. Thank you.

Painting Over Paneling

We have 70's era dark paneling in the kitchen, a stainless steel back splash, sink, and stove top. The appliances are off white and the flooring and counter tops are an off-white to tan pattern.

The largest wall leads out into the living room which has walls that are a light cedar tongue in groove. I want to paint the kitchen paneling. Any suggestions for color? Thanks.

Bleach Stain on Carpet

I think this situation is hopeless, but thought I would at least try to see if someone has a solution. My granddaughter dropped grape Popsicle on my carpet and I was rattled and distracted when I went to clean it up. I picked up a spray bottle that had bleach as an ingredient in it and sprayed the carpet with it.

Needless to say, I now have an orange stain where the original stain was. My carpet is a tan/light brown color. Is there any hope at all for this? Thanks to all. I love all the tips I read and so appreciate this site.
