To get a good deal when looking for your prom dress, go further afield than your local mall! Go to Resale shops where they have designer dresses for a lot less. Or look for something vintage. If you have a nice dress, you could even resell it, bringing down your costs even further in the long run.

I also recommend looking at the clearance racks of high-end stores like Dillards, Macys and others. I found a lovely purple gown and jacket there that I am going to wear for my wedding for $22.50, original price was $160!!!!!
