Horny Toads

They aren't named and are very young. We have had them for about a month. They are Horny Toads which are common to the desert area. They like to lay around eating crickets and grasshoppers.

These started out as pets to go to two of the grandchildren but I don't know if I can give them up or not. They are adorable even though they are ugly. I don't know if I will find anymore because they have started to hibernate for the winter

Budget Kitchen Makeover

This complete make over costs us less than $500 (except the appliances and new light fixture.) We painted the dated cabinets with a formica paint, added a crown molding, tiled the counter with cobalt and white tiles (over the stained laminate.) I added expensive cobalt glass mini tiles as an accent too.

We added a 2nd counter height to the island and a basket where the new ovens were smaller than the hole from the old ones.

All our guests compliment this very pretty and very clean looking kitchen. We even just added brushed steel knobs that I found for 94 cents each on ebay (the were 5.95 each at the home improvement stores) You have to agree.......WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

Plant Markers

One of the most difficult things to find for the garden is plant markers that hold up to the seasons. After experimenting for decades, I have many suggestions.

1. Use the professional Sharpie marker (not the standard) and write on rocks. It doesn't interupt the serenity of the garden, like sharp pointed metal stakes which break as well as have labels fall off. The rocks supply the Feng Shui movement and balance to the garden. The marker will hold up for 1 full year, then you need to rewrite the plant names.

2. I got tired of rewriting plant names and started using acrylic paints on the rocks. I would use the colors of the flowers and eventually painted the flowers on the rocks as well. (This works great for the seasonal color themes in the gardens.

3. When I swap plants with friends and organizations, I use Venetian blinds cut to 3" length and write the name and description of the plant.

4. Out of used Venetian blinds? Use plastic silverware or slice up disposable parishable food lids. A sharpie works fine on these types of plastic.

5. If choice 3 and 4 are not tasteful enough for the function (rarely the case, most true gardeners are into recycling and saving the planet) take a photo of the flower when it is in bloom and attach to the pot. (I do this one when it is a token gift for a lovely luncheon or garden tour)

6. If you do not have photos of the plants in bloom, cut a photo out from a flower catalog and attach to the pot. HAPPY GARDENING : )

Plant Coasters

Why spend money of clear plastic coasters when you have access to dozens of free coasters monthly? I use the lids of perishable food items. Plus I paint them to match the decor in the room and each decoupaged planter.

Paint Pallets

Use the plastic lids that perishable items are sold in. I find that cottage cheese lids, and country crock covers are very useful holding an array of colors. And best yet, they are used 100 times over instead of filling a landfill.

Great Inexpensive (if not free) Tables

Doors make great tables. I take discarded doors from the town dump and bring them home to use as tables for a garden work table. I take the 5 gallon buckets that cat food or litter sells in, and turn them over to use as the legs of the table. It usually takes 6 buckets per door to make a sturdy table.

Remove all the dead bolts and hinges so you have a flat surface. The storm doors are much heavier to carry, but they are great for the 4 seasons we have in Maine. The lighter indoor doors are great extra tables for yard sales or craft space in the garage. For higher legs, use wooden saw horses.

Moving Heavy Furniture

To help move heavy furniture more easily on tile or wood floors, lift just enough to slip a throw rug or one of those carpet samples, carpet side down, under the edge. It will slide across the floor and also protect the floor from scratches. I use this method to move my large file cabinet in my office. And my refrigerator in the kitchen.

Grease Stains on House Paneling

We bought an older home built in 1973 with high quality paneling in it. I made the mistake of taking the greasy, smoke covered kitchen cabinet doors off of the cabinets to clean everything and leaned them up against the paneling. I sprayed them down with ammonia and now some of the doors that were really greasy have left a black line on my home's paneling. Nothing I have tried will clean the paneling. More ammonia, Purple Power Cleaner, lightly scrubbing, I have tried all I know to do without ruining them. Any ideas?
