Have you always wanted to get organized, but keep putting it off? Perhaps you're not sure where to begin? Or maybe you're feeling overwhelmed? Is it possible that you feel you don't have enough time? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. CLOSE YOUR EYES AND TAKE A DEEP BREATH.

Dream, for a moment, about how wonderful life is going to be when your environment is clutter free and organized. Focus on the dream--not the effort.

2. START SOMEWHERE.

Not sure where to start? It really doesn't matter. The important thing is that you just start somewhere. Just by getting started, you're halfway there!

3. WHAT'S BOTHERING YOU THE MOST?

This is usually the best place to begin. If you hate that pile of papers on your desk, start there. If you're getting stressed because you can't fit another item on the kitchen counter, than you've found the perfect starting point.

4. FOCUS ON A LITTLE BIT AT A TIME.

Rather than thinking about the huge project ahead, break that project up into manageable tasks. For instance, if you want to organize the boxes in your attic, you might consider going through one box per day, until it's all complete.

5. ASK SOMEONE TO BUG YOU.

Tell a close friend, relative or someone on the Get Organized Now! Discussion Forum, what you plan to organize, and by what date. Then, simply ask that person to bug you a few days before to see if you've done it yet. A little outside motivation is often an enormous help!

6. BRIBE YOURSELF.

Make something you love to do, dependant on the completion of today's task. If you promise yourself that you will not watch your favorite television program tonight, unless you work for 15 minutes on organizing your paper piles, you're sure to get that small task finished. No cheating allowed.

The secret for me was to tame my pack ratting ways. After we moved, I learned a hard lesson on wants and needs. I've come to the conclusion that I don't need more than I want. So, the first thing I did was DECREASE the amount of clutter coming in. Then I started getting rid of all the stuff I had been pack ratting. If I didn't use it on a regular basis (or even look at it), then it was gotten rid of in this order: given to family and friends, given to charity, recycled, and trashed. I'm talking immediate clean up. No time to list things on eBay (only gives me a reason to keep the clutter longer). I did a little each day and then kept maintaining it each day. You will be amazed at how much your mind clears up as your home clears up. You start to enjoy staying home because you can now USE that kitchen table, garage and basement for other things then storing useless items. Tackle one area at a time so you don't get overwhelmed. If all else fails, move and you'll learn this the way I did. ;)

Organization is what everybody wants. How do we do that? The first thing is to decide that there will have to be some hard decisions agreed upon. You can't have all your decor out at the same time. You can't keep everything. If you haven't used it and it doesn't fit, get rid of it. One way would be to do one room at a time. You have to do three things. Think of NEED, STORE, TOSS. Absolutely everything has to fit into one of those categories. Label boxes well. Your reward is that you can now get Other decor and favorite things out and display them. After all, You've missed them, haven't you.

In my opinion the key element to getting organized and STAYING ORGANIZED is DISCIPLINE!! When you use something --put it back. When you get up from the table--tackle the dishes--when you get out of bed --make it up. Then THINK of how GOOD it feels to walk into a clean kitchen or to come home to a freshly made bed and to know WHERE to find something when you need it!! A habit I've tried to enforce is to do 1-2 loads of laundry a day. Usually if I follow this routine I can keep things caught up. After all MOMS--- if YOU don't do it---WHO WILL???
