Hammer (English Bulldog)

Hammer is 3 years old. He is an Olde English Bulldogge. Hammer came to us from Starline Ranch in Iowa when he was 8 weeks old.

Hammer likes to go outside and run around chasing a ball for awhile. He also likes to sleep a lot. He's a big teddy bear and we love him.

Use Your Crisper For Eggs

If you buy in bulk like I do, I have something to share. I love eggs, and find that I can get 5 dozen for a lot less per dozen. The challenge was where to keep them. So, one day, I cut up the cardboard nesting trays they were in and put them inside the crisper tray in my fridge.

Now, not only do they all fit, but they are much more protected.

Hope this helps!

Craft Project: Picture Me
By Debra Frick

This is an easy craft for kids of all ages and something we just did with the kindergarten class that I volunteer in. It does not take much time but makes a beautiful gift for parents, grandparents or someone special. This craft can be done anytime of the year but we choose Fall because of the unusually nice weather we have been having.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Be Sure Your Home Computer Is Password Protected

Most people keep password on their work computer, but few keep passwords on their home computers.

However, one should keep passwords on their home computer as well, and keep them separate from those at their workplace. Should someone access your home computer without consent, they would have access to your email, bank accounts and possible more information. It doesn't have to be done by a thief breaking into your home. It can be done by a small child playing with the computer who "accidently" places a bid on your ebay account to a babysitter or friends of your child who are visiting.

I once experienced a family member (young adult with issues) who got into my computer and sent out nasty emails from our account to others, made bids on our ebay account, sent money bill pay and got into our paypal.

A simple action of having a password would have prevented it all.

"Rent" a Halloween Costume from Ebay!

Last year our daughter fell in love with the Supergirl costume from the Lillian Vernon catalog, priced at about $30. Instead, we found the same costume, worn once, on ebay for under $10. This year we expect to sell it for that price and get our money back. Also, instead of buying shoe covers to go with the costume, we bought some red ankle boots (again on ebay) that could be used all winter on their own.

This year she wants to be Red Riding Hood. I found a regular red hooded cape on ebay that she will be able to wear as a coat throughout the fall. And next year, back to ebay we go, to resell the cape and "rent" something that, at least to us, is new!

Don't Kill Caterpillars, They Are Pollinators

Several days ago, I found five really weird caterpillars on one of my small Meyer's Lemon trees. They looked like truncated snakes with white and black stripes and patches that fell into a scale pattern and even false eyes. There was a kind of snake nosed hood that covered the actual caterpillar head and if you touched the hood gently with a grass blade, a red forked tongue feature would dart out. I tried to get the local extension agent to identify them for me, but they weren't familiar with them and advised me to kill them before they spread--especially since they were eating citrus. Late yesterday, the University of Florida Master Gardener got back to me and identified them as Orange Dog Caterpillars. They are the young of giant swallowtails that live on citrus. The interesting thing is that she said DON'T kill them.

Too late, since after more than 48 hours I put the jar of them in the freezer since I didn't want to keep stripping leaves off the citrus to feed them. What I thought would interest you though is WHY she said not to kill them. She said the reason that the fruit isn't setting on the citrus and citrus related trees is because the loss of the bees has left us without pollinators. In desperation, they are now saying that it is better to risk a little damage to the trees than to kill any insect that could help pollinate. They are saying DON'T KILL ANY CATERPILLARS ANY MORE! (I just heard back from the Master Gardener again--she said since the trees were so small I could kill some to protect them since it isn't an endangered species)

That has really struck home, though, and I won't kill any more if they show up. I AM trying to identify other local plants they might live on. There are a couple known ones besides citrus in South Florida though they say that the resulting butterflies are smaller, than the citrus fed ones. Unfortunately, I don't recognize either of them as living around here, though I will research that too.

Halloween Bats

A fun and cheap idea for a Halloween Party is to cut out bat shapes out of black construction paper. Put silver or gold glitter around the edges and for eyes. After they are dry, attach with fishing line at different lengths from the ceiling. If you have a ceiling fan, they will move in the wind and appear real.

Give Angel Food As A Gift

There is a great web site called AngelFoodMinistries.com. There are no special requirements to take advantage of this site, and they have phenomenal food deals. For example, a single package costs $30 to purchase and the contents you receive have a value of between $75 - 80. There are other packages as well. They accept food stamps and other payments. You put your zip code and they tell you the center nearest you.

Your order is placed around the 10th of the month and you pick it up on the given day, which is at the end of the month. The food is very good as well. All you need to do is bring a box to pick up your order. You can order as many packages as you like. It makes a great gift for an older person as they have prepared meals also.

How to Make a Plastic Bag Storage Container

Take a piece of fabric, fold it over and sew side. Hem each end leaving space for the draw string. Run a draw string at the top with a string to hang the container on a nail. Run elastic around the bottom and pull together. Put your plastic bags from the store in them. If you need one pull from bottom.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

While I sat in the reception area of my doctor's office, a woman rolled an elderly man in a wheelchair into the room.

As she went to the receptionist's desk, the man sat there, alone and silent.

Just as I was thinking I should make small talk with him, a little boy slipped off his mother's lap and walked over to the wheelchair.

Placing his hand on the man's, he said, 'I know how you feel. My mom makes me ride in the stroller too.

Manual For Kenmore Portable Washer #44901

Does anyone have any information on a Sears Kenmore Portable Washer Model 44901. It is for washing clothes. Guinea Pigs Seem Skittish

I've had my 2 guinea pigs for 2 months now and they still seem new to me. I've read up on them, I get them out almost every night after school. I try to handle them and I love them lots but they just don't love me back.

Every time I pick them up now they jump off my hand, every time I go to stroke them they run off. Even just walking up to the cage. Also one of them bites! I don't know whether to take one or both back and to get a new pet altogether - maybe a rabbit. What should I do?

They state that they will charge you $5 for the phone call. Sounds like a scam to me. Can anyone help me?

Thrifty Christmas Gifts For Large Family

I am currently a college student, living on my own, and definitely on a budget for Christmas. I have 3 brothers, all married, and 4 nieces and 1 nephew, plus my parents to buy for. My boyfriend's family I am also very close with, and everyone in the family always buys me something. There are 9 people on that side to buy for, as well.

I was wondering if anyone has some thrifty ideas on something sentimental I could make, or great places to shop. My budget will probably be around $150- MAYBE $200 for everything. I believe I have around 22 people to buy for. The ages of the nieces and nephew range from 1 year up to 11. Thank you for any help or ideas you can offer!
