Daily Thrifty Tips - May 12, 2009

Vol. 8, Num. 93, May 12, 2009 (Read It Online)

Thank you to everyone that took time to rate tips yesterday! Keep it up!

No More Duplication

Another new development at ThriftyFun is we are cutting down on the duplication in newsletters. In the past, we have publisehd the same tips in multiple newsletters. For example, a gardening tip might be in both the daily and the gardening newsletter. Since so many people subscribe to multiple newsletters, we have decided to cut down on the duplication to keep the contest in the newsletters fresh and unique. The only exception is the Tip of the Day newsletter, which features the one of the best tips from our archvies each day.

Thanks for reading,

Teach Young Children to Use the Computer

Start young children on the computer. They love the quality time spent with them, plus they learn to spell so quickly. My granddaughter started at 3 years old. She learned the alphabet and spelling so quickly.

Kittie and Buster (Cat and Dog Mixed Breeds)

This is "Kittee" and "Buster". Kittee is 6 yrs old and Buster is 9 yrs old. Buster was rescued from under a dumpster when he was only 6 weeks old. Covered with fleas and ticks, the vet said he would not have survived another week. Kittee was rescued at a car wash when she was 9 weeks old.

These two are inseparable. Buster either thinks he is a cat or Kittee thinks she is a dog! They are mostly indoor pets but love to go outside within our fenced yard. Kittee has recently discovered that she can squeeze between the fence and escape into the entire yard!

These two also live with two other cats, Mickey who is a 13 year old diabetic and Sammie who is a 3 year old rescue cat. They all love each other!

Delilah and Scarlett (German Shepherds)

Delilah and Scarlett, are both German Shepherds. One is 9 years old and the other is 18 months. I bought Delilah as a pup in 2000 and Scarlett in December 2007 as an eight week old puppy.

Delilah likes to think she's in charge of Scarlett, even though she isn't her mother. Scarlett seems to think Delilah is her mother as well! They love to go chase rabbits at the nearby park, and as we live in small country town there are lots to chase, but they never catch them!

They are spoiled beyond belief, and absolutely inseparable. They are the most lovable pets imaginable and adore children. Scarlett loves to sleep along the end of the bed.

Craft Project: Recycled Wind Chimes

Use up your old scrap pieces of wood and clay pots to create this summer wind chime to enjoy. I used a Sailboat theme with an old scrap piece of wood, little clay pots, white nylon cording for strings and added big washers for the chimes. Hand paint a theme of your choice. Drill a few holes in the wood for hanging at the top. Add your clay pots and washers and you're all set to enjoy both the visual beauty and sounds this wind chime will make.

Today's Tips:

Keep Bees Away

This honestly works! To rid your outside areas of bees:

Fill to 1/2 full a clear plastic sandwich bag. Toss a shiny penny inside the bag then tie the bag tightly shut with a piece of twine. Hang this bag anywhere you want bees to stay away from and start smiling-cause it works!

Why it works: bees don't have the same eyes as we humans; so, bees 'see' this as a spider in a web! And they don't want to get caught!

Stuff any size of brown paper bag with newspaper-enough to puff it up. Either tie the bag shut with twine or tape it shut with brown tape. Then, either hang the bag OR tape the bag to any place that won't be rained on-more smiles, folks, cause it works! lol

Why it works: bees 'see' a wasps' nest and don't want anything to do with wasps! In fact, when I taped mine up, a yellow jacket came right next to my head (yikes!), touched the bag two or three times; then, flew away. The only bee to come near since I hung the bag, not even a wasp has come around the bag!

NOTE: Since I used both of these hints, I have NOT had a single bee within 15 feet of my back door; thank goodness for small favours. Plus, these are easy, inexpensive hints plus neither looks awful, maybe only 'odd'.

Enjoy!

Source: Who knows? I stumbled on these hints a long time ago.

Store Detergent in Name Brand Box

I have a kind of sneaky trick to share.

My husband insists on my using Gain laundry detergent and nothing else, but I want to buy what is on sale. He says he can tell the difference when I use anything but Gain. So I kept on buying Gain even though it's getting expensive - like everything else.

So I bought a box of Gain, used all of it, but kept the empty box. Now I buy what is on sale and fill the empty Gain box and my husband loves the way his clothes smell like Gain!

I know this is deceptive, but I buy the groceries and have to stick to a budget that we've agreed upon. It's funny how just seeing a label is enough. Our minds are so powerful!

My husband is in the food business and teases me by saying that I'm not, what is known in the business as 'brand loyal'! It's true because I'm always trying to save money and will try store brands, but I still have my favorites like Dawn. I won't use anything else because nothing works like Dawn for me.

Save With Fund Raising Silent Auction Items

Every year our school has a fundraiser for the PTO (Parents and Teachers Organization). They do a carnival with food, games, face painting, cake walks, balloon sales, raffles, and a silent auction for donated items. Every year the bidding goes high on the silent auction for things like a handmade picnic table, tanning sessions, gift baskets, etc.

This year I did the math and realize now that in the long run, most items went way cheaper than the store prices. I bid this year on some VIP passes for the Shedd Aquarium, and the planetarium in Chicago.

I received 4 passes, (myself, my honey, and my 2 teenage girls) to each place for just $20.00! They are good for a year and when tax season rolls around again we will already have started a plan for a family trip.

P.S. I saved $120.00! And don't worry, the school still got my fair share of donation, because I give my time, game money, and cakes each year.

Cleaning Ceramic Top Stoves

To keep your ceramic stove top shiny like new, clean after cooking when stove is cold. First sponge top with Palmolive dish soap and water. With a straight razor dispenser (available at Home Depot) take off any cooked on stuff. Apply small amount of Cerama Ceramic cleaner, also available at Home Depot. Rub in with paper towel. Use clean paper towel to polish to a shine.

I also use Whirpool Ceramic Protectant once a week, which makes it easier to remove stains and cooked on food. I've had my cook top for 2 years, do a lot of cooking, and stove still looks shiny and bright!

Super Soaker for Cat Fights

I have a cat who protects his territory! Like most cats he will chase other cats out of his yard and this can lead to fights. I was looking for a safe way to break up cat-fights without getting hurt in the process when my mother told me of her "secret weapon".

She buys several of those big squirt guns and keeps one on the front and she will get ready to hit one or both of the cats with a long shot of water. In an emergency, this is much faster than turning on the hose and it's safer than getting bitten.

My mother originally bought the long range squirt gun to stop her cat from climbing over her fence. It only took two attempts at escape, and now her cat stays in the yard! Just be sure you let children know this is only an emergency tool and it's only used for the cat's safety. Never tease or be cruel to an animal!

Super Soakers can squirt up to 50 feet and they are a toy made for kids, so they should be safe, but you should still use care to not pump them up very much so they have less pressure; this will increase the safety factor. They cost around $10.

Seasonal Wall For Easy Decorating

The various seasonal holidays have always been fun to celebrate with lots of decorations throughout the house. But I now find my storage space is more limited and I often am rushed to get all the decorations up in time for the holiday.

So, my solution has been to merely put up a season wall, a small wall at the focal point in our living room that has a small table under it. For each holiday, even St Patty's Day, the wall and table get decorated.

All the decorations have to fit in one storage bin, marked for the occasion. I am no longer tempted to buy all the cute stuff out there for the various holidays, and my children have happily been the recipients of all my extra holiday decorations.

Birthday Party Ideas for Girls

Hey Girls! If it's your birthday coming up, of course you're going to want to have an awesome party. It can be so hard to decide what to do, especially on a budget so I hope these tips help!

My first party idea is to firstly have all your friends around to do each other's hair and make-up and get all dressed up. Go out to a cafe or restaurant for a delicious dessert, then back home for a fun night, lots of movies and "yum" food, then home in the morning.

Secondly if your the adventurous type , invite 2-5 friends and go out rock-climbing and get some lunch. It can end up being loads of fun.

Another idea: many teenage girls love fashion so be creative. Borrow some sewing machines from friends and family and buy some cheap material. You can make some cool bags, scarfs and headbands. To add to the fun, get some delicious food to entertain. After you've made all your bits and pieces, settle down and watch a movie. I can guarantee you and your friends will have a lot of fun and some cool accessories.

Younger girls go for a theme; fairies, ballet, dance themes work best and keep the kids entertained! Hope this helps! Anyo ther questions, make a comment!

Removing Chlorine from Hair

If you swim daily in a pool for physical therapy or recreation you'll want to remove that nasty chlorine from your hair without drying it out with excess washings. I simply buy conditioner from the dollar store. Then when showering, I simply brush the conditioner through my hair with a large tooth comb. I make sure to also massage it into my scalp, then rinse well. This conditioner cleans my hair and removes the chlorine without drying it out.

Storing Iceberg Lettuce

When chopping iceberg lettuce, it is a use it now, or lose it. This is common knowledge throughout households and the restaurant industry, because it goes brown! Or does it? Cut it with any knife at any size and store it in PVC free plastic wrap and containers or any container with the chemical free plastic wrap and it will not turn brown for a day or more. I use whole foods brand 365 plastic wrap and storage containers as well, have used both organic and non organic iceberg lettuce and it will not brown nearly what it will with regular name brands and cheap imitations. How about that?

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Having lost weight over the past few years, a lady was discarding things from her wardrobe that no longer fit. Her seven-year-old niece was watching as she held up a huge pair of slacks.

"Wow," the lady said, "I must have worn these when I was 185."

Her niece looked puzzled, then asked, "How old are you now?"

Making Adobe Brick with Cement Added

I live in Arkansas and hope someone can help me. I've done a lot of research on the web in search of what I need, to no avail. I am needing help with a recipe to make my own Adobe brick to build a home with. This isn't your regular adobe that just washes away. This recipe has a little cement in it to make it virtually indestructible. The wiring is run through the walls through PVC pipe.

Also, if anyone has good plans for building one of these on a 2 story level I'd like all the help I can get. I've never done this before but I've got a lot of ideas. I just need help in making them come true. Any and all help will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Using a Dish Towel to Clean

Do you think it is sanitary to use the same dish cloth you wash dishes with to wipe off the countertop and stove? I read an article that stated this was unsanitary and you should have a dish cloth for washing the dishes and another one for cleaning the stove and surrounding areas only. I figured with 2 dish cloths laying around in the kitchen one could easily forget which one is for cleaning. What do you think?

Waterproofing Cotton Fabric

I have been rained out of playing paintball for the last time! I have been looking for ways to waterproof my Camo, and the only ones I can find involve gasoline, and wax.

The other option is to use tent waterproofing spray, which I have my doubts about, but my question to you is: Can I use silicone-based-tent-waterproofing-spray on normal, army-surplus cotton BDU's? Or, do I need to try dissolving wax in gasoline then soak the uniform in this and let them dry for a week or two?

American Staffordshire Terrier Keeps Biting People

I got an American Staffordshire Terrier before he was even a month old. Some woman left him in a parking lot at the vet that i go to so i found him and brought him home. I had to bottle feed him and everything. He is like my baby. Now he's 5 years old. I raised him with nothing but love and affection and I have a big family so he was brought up around a lot of people.

He is the best dog I've ever had. He has so much personality and is very friendly. He sleeps in bed with me every night underneath the covers, lays on the couch and watches TV with me. He has never shown any signs of aggression. But when he was around 2 or 3 he bit someone for the first time. Up until now he's bitten probably around 8-9 people. Not big bites, no one was hurt or anything but it still concerns me.

When he bites he doesn't attack. He does not growl or show teeth. You wouldn't even know he was about to bite you. And then he'll just bite, hold on for a couple seconds and let go and walk away like nothing happened. It's very weird. I'm not sure what to do and the thought of him mutilating somebody one day just haunts me. Please help!
