Hello,

We have 17 new requests today, please look them over.

I also want to call attention to our new website design. If you haven't checked it out yet, be sure to drop by ThriftyFun.com and try it out. We recently added a new "You Are Here" feature with drop down menus that allow you to quickly navigate through all of the topics on the site. We are still ironing out a few bugs but so far the new site and new server have been working well.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Measuring for Polar Fleece Blankets

When buying fabric to make fleece blankets, get one with a plaid background, to save time in measuring for making the fringe around the edges. Use the width of your thumb for the width of each fringe, and the length of the scissors to the length of the fringe.

This way you don't have to measure using a ruler and marker, just follow the lines of the fabric. A great time saver.

By cutting down the time of making the fringe, you can make twice as many blankets for gifts to family and friends or to donate to children through Project Linus (www.projectlinus.org).

Editor's Note: They have a great link for patterns.

Today's Tips

Easy Outdoor Bird Feeders and Baths

Clean an empty 2 liter bottle. Replace the cap and cut a hole on the side close to the top. For a feeder, cut a hole on both sides of the bottle. Tie a shoe string around the neck of the bottle and tie on a sturdy branch. Fill the bottle with bird seed, or water for a bath.

NOTE: Be sure to clean out the water daily to prevent bacteria from forming and mosquitoes from nesting.

Another easy feeder is take a piece of dry toast, spread peanut butter or honey on both sides, and then roll it in bird seed. Draw a string through the center and hang from a tree.

Have any sunflowers left over from your garden? Hang the flower part from a sturdy tree branch by tying a string around its stem (cut stem leaving 4 inches from the head) and let the birds feast on the seeds.

Happy Bird Watching!

Purchase a Bottle of Flaxseed Oil

It is available at your local Whole Foods or natural foods store and use it to dress your salads. Since you need one tablespoonful a day, if you don't use it all as salad dressing, use it on hot vegetables or in your morning oatmeal. Saves money on salad dressing and also boosts your heart health!

Easy to Take Salad

Natural Decor Items for the Garden

Collect some interesting rocks and driftwood to place in your flowerbeds. This way, small plants can be grouped by them, bulbs can peek from behind them and crawling controllable plants can trail over them. An empty tree stump is an exotic planter!

Baby Teeth and the Dentist

Everyone teaches their children to brush their teeth, but lots of people don't think of baby teeth. Baby's teeth should be brushed every day as soon as they come in. And children should see a dentist as early as 1-2 years of age.

A Recipe To Live By

Blend one cup of love and one half cup of kindness, add alternately in small portions, one cup of appreciation and three cups of pleasant companionship into which has been sifted three teaspoons of deserving praise.

Flavor with one teaspoon carefully chosen advice. Lightly fold in one cup of cheerfulness to which has been added a pinch of sorrow.

Pour with tender care into small clean hearts and let bake until well matured. Turn out on the surface of society, humbly invoke God's blessings and it will serve all mankind.

Make-Do Colander

If you're in a bind, you can make a quick, disposable colander by punching holes in an aluminum pie plate and bending it a bit to the shape you need. This is especially useful for picnics and camping.

Composting With Sawdust and Grass Clippings

A quick and easy compost method if you don't have manure but do have a good supply of grass clippings. Grass is quite high in nitrogen. Mix one part of sawdust with four parts of fresh grass clippings. Turn and mix the pile thoroughly every third day for three weeks. Do not make layers, and do not add water--the fresh clippings will produce enough moisture. The heat will go down by the fifteenth or eighteenth day, and the compost will be ready to use.

Tips and ideas for serving ice cream. Post your ideas.

If you're serving ice cream for yourself, use a soup spoon as the scoop, then as your eating utensil.

You've saved yourself the effort of washing one tool, and one that is often the harder to wash.

This also works if you're serving for several people and one person has a large enough mouth. (grin)

Locked Your Car Keys In The Car?

Do you have a habit of locking your key in the car?

If you carry a wallet in your pocket, keep an extra key there. My wallet actually has a loop for a key, and I have had to use it on occasion. The idea is to NEVER use it as a driving key. Put it back in your pocket when you're done opening the door.

You can also get a credit card key, a plastic key that fits in your credit card at many hardware stores.

Scrub Jays Deterrents

i have these 2 scrub jays that are living around my house. They have lived here for a while, but just about a month ago every time my cat goes outside 1 of the jays squaks at my cat CONSTANTLY. It is the most obnoxious loud noise ever. Once I bring my cat in the house the jay stops. I was wondering why my cat doesn't kill it, then I realized my cat is afraid of the jay, because he'll peck at my cat. My cat doesn't like to be in the house very much so when he is out all you hear is that bird. It's driving me crazy and I don't want to kill it but what else could I try to do?

Planting an Eastern Redbud Tree

I have a new Eastern Redbud tree that I must plant very soon. It is about 7 ft. tall from top of ball to tips. The main trunk branches into a narrow "Y" at about 3 ft. Each of the two "arms" (reaching up about 4 ft.) have several very small branches. But, neither arm has a branch big enough (in that 4 ft. stretch) for me to picture a normal or good spread of branches as the tree grows.

It seems to me that I should prune those two branches back to encourage more and better growth of "secondary" branches.
Am I right?

Please help ASAP!

Beware Of Falling Minimum Payments
By James Dimmitt

If you opened a credit card statement recently and were pleasantly surprised to find that your minimum payment due was lowered, don't be so quick to "jump for joy". What may appear as a small boost to your monthly budget is actually the rock that can weigh you down in debt for a lifetime.

Convenience Can Be Costly - Understanding Cash Advances
By James Dimmitt

You've just opened your credit card bill and attached to your statement you find a "convenience check" included. It may already be filled out with a dollar amount such as $300, $500, or even $1,000. Your mind fills with ideas of what you could buy with this "instant" money. A new summer wardrobe, a nice dinner and tickets to a concert, a weekend getaway.

Parenting is a lot of work.
By Tim Bete

The Federal Government's Dictionary of Occupational Titles provides descriptions for more than 12,000 jobs -- everything from "Able Seaman" to "Zoologist." You might expect to find "parent" between "Parcel Post Clerk" (Wraps, inspects, weighs, and affixes postage to parcel post packages) and "Pari-mutuel Ticket Cashier" (Cashes winning pari-mutuel tickets for patrons at race track). Unfortunately, parent is not one of the 12,000 occupations listed.
