This is a picture of my fresh water spring in my back yard. It's actually about 8 inches wide, but I tried to create the little world that I saw when I looked at it. I'm located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

Flash Cards from Playing Cards
Today I decided to clean out my "junk drawer" and I came across a deck of cards. When checking them out I realized that the queen of hearts was missing so decided to toss them out. Then I did a second thinking about that & decided to keep them as I can use them for FLASH CARDS for my grand kids when I sit them & help them to learn their numbers.
HAPPY TEACHING.

I took a fishing tackle box (discarded by dad) and turned it into a craft box for my boys. I put in crayons, colored pencils, tape, glue, regular pencils. and some glitter, etc. Now when the boys want to be creative they can go get the craft box and have fun.

My kids love juice, but the sugar content and the "amount" they want to drink is too much. So now I add about 25% water to each jug and they still get all the nutrients and they feel like mom is great because she lets them "have another cup."

There is nothing I despise more than cleaning the litter box. Even when you dump it there is still litter stuck to the bottom the you have to scrape out and stinks to all high heaven. Well here's a way to keep the stink off and save yourself the trouble. Clean the box off and wipe dry. Spray with cooking spray and sprinkle with baking soda. Pour in litter and you are done. The next time you clean there will be no clumps stuck to the litter box.

If you dread the high cost of tuning your piano there is one simple solution. Just play it! Many people think that if you just leave your piano to set that it will not lose its tune, but the opposite is actually true. It is better to play the piano to keep it in tune!

Know which clothing you wear by reversing the direction of all your hanger heads, now wear what you want and launder as usual, when you return laundered clothes to the closet rehang the hanger in the other direction.
By the end of the season you will know what you wear by the direction of the hanger heads. All you need to do is sort through the pieces you haven't worn all season and decide what you truly no longer need or want.

Ideas for reusing the mesh bags that onions come in. Post your ideas!
Toy Bag For The Car
I wash out the mesh bag that my onions come in and use it to store toys for the car. That way everything is together in the car. Use a bread bag clip or a rubber band to close the mesh bag.

Jello Alternative - Jello With Yogurt
1 small package jello
1 cup plain nonfat yogurt instead of cold water
Dissolve the jello in 1 cup of hot water as the box directions say. Put the yogurt in the bowl you plan to use for the jello and slowly whisk in the jello, stirring with the whisk until no lumps remain, although lumps don't hurt the taste. Chill until set. The yogurt cuts the sweetness of the jello and adds nutrition. If you want to dress it up, whipped cream can put on top when serving.

If you have dry, brittle nails that won't grow or break easily, take a waxy lip gloss (I prefer the vitamin enriched "Soft Lips") and apply to dry nails. Your nails will become stronger and grow faster! How this works is the lip balm holds in the moisture, an essential ingredient needed for healthy nails.

Removing Auto Grease and Oil from Clothes
This one is mainly for you shade tree mechanics. To remove oil, grease or diesel or any other auto type oils from clothing just add a can of coke that's right you heard me "coke" with your normal wash detergent and wash as usual. I learned this in the army after replacing numerous uniforms at expensive costs now all I do is wash with coke.

Tips for saving money on dish soap. Post your ideas!
A Teaspoon of Dish Soap
It is not so much our "big" expenditures that get us into trouble for thrifty people tend to shy away from large purchases. Instead it is "the little foxes that spoil the vine". One such case for me is too much waste in dish soap. When it seemed like I was "always" buying dish soap, I decided to put a teaspoon by the bottle and measure out one teaspoon for each sink of dishes. It was "plenty" of soap and it seems like this bottle is lasting forever.

This has always been a family favorite of ours for many many years.
1 large box orange jello
1 medium container cool whip
1 large container cottage cheese
1 large can mandarin oranges - DRAINED - reserve about 6 orange slices for garnish
Mix everything together (use the jello dry - do NOT add water)
Pour this mix into a bowl - garnish with remaining oranges
Chill until set - about 2 hours
VARIATIONS -- strawberry jello and frozen DRAINED strawberries may be substituted for orange stuff so now you have PINK STUFF! :)

This was my mother's old stand-by recipe for Sloppy Joes. The recipe is probably well over 50 years old.
4 T worchestershire sauce
3 T sugar
2 T vinegar
1 cup ketchup
Brown about 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
(my mother would add a chopped onion to the ground beef while cooking - we prefer not to have the onion -
If you like onion then add a chopped onion while browning the ground beef)
Drain well
Add all sauce ingredients
(You may add a little water to sauce - it will cook off while simmering)
Simmer until sauce is thick

Something To Use Instead Of Broth?
Sometimes a soup recipe calls for canned broth as an ingredient. Now the price of broth is not low. Bullion cubes would do the trick, but what I am thinking is to use the leftover vegetable cooking liquid. Make sure it has enough salt. Has anybody tried that? Or would you use plain salt water?

Homemade Version Of Clorox Cleanup
I live in an area of TX that is extremely prone to mold and mildew. The best thing I've used so far to combat & kill these is Clorox cleanup. I clean houses and do "make-ready" between tenants.
Needless to say, I use a LOT of it. I'm looking for a homemade bleach/detergent/whatever recipe that's more affordable! Anyone out there made one up yet?
Thanks,
Jace

I recently borrowed a friends "food saver" to freeze some meat. The food saver worked great, and I insisted on replacing the roll of bags that I had used. To my surprise, the roll cost me $10.00 at Walmart. I would like to purchase my own food saver, and remember years ago, seeing one advertised on TV that you can use on any type of plastic bag and you could also reseal plastic bags that vegetables and frozen foods were purchased in. Does anyone know of any brand(s) of food savers that the bags don't cost so much and one that you can use to reseal all types of plastic bags with?
Thanks!
Debbie from New Jersey

I bought a paper shredder at Christmas, and it has done wonders in helping me get better organized. The shredder cuts in two directions, so I'm left with lots of 1.5-inch by .25-inch pieces.
I save the shredded paper and then stuff it in grocery sacks to use like "shipping peanuts." Also, in the spring I'll be able to use lots of it as mulch when I'm tending my flower and veggie gardens.
Still, I wondered what other ways I could use this shredded paper.

My dog used to urinate on corner walls in my rental property and my landlord pulled the carpets up and polished the floorboards only to discover nasty black stained (and now polished) wood in the areas where Oscar used to pee. I don't know how to fix the floor - can someone help me please? Also this is a good warning to people who think dog pee only affects the carpet on top, no sir!
