Photo: Monarch at a Butterfly Exhibit

I recently took my daughter to a butterfly exhibit at a local greenhouse. They charged a small admission, and this served as a fundraiser for a children's organization. There was one section of the greenhouse closed off and full of butterflies and flowers they liked. The kids got to dip their fingers in sugar water and the butterflies would land on their fingers to take in the "nectar." She loved learning about the beautiful butterflies and it was a great photo op.

Craft Project: Quick Flowers In A Basket Decoration

This fun floral craft is perfect for a centerpiece on the table, a small decoration, or a beautiful kid's craft. You just take some floral Styrofoam and arrange some fake flowers in it. You take twisted raffia, wind and glue it around the Styrofoam base, and voila, a fancy basket!

Poochie (Rottweiler)

This is Poochie, who arrived with his name. He's sometimes known as "Pucci Paw VaRotti" (because he can out-sing any wolf or coyote with his tenor voice). I usually just call him "Poo" He is six. His cat, Eyak, was nine weeks old in this picture. Poo is a Rottweiler. Believe it, or not. He was given to me by a friend of a co-worker, to "fill the hole" after my wonderful yellow Lab, Sloan, died tragically from Laryngeal Paralysis shortly after his eleventh birthday.

Poo mostly likes to sleep--on the bed, of course. Sometimes he plays "Mop the Floor" with Eyak. Eyak is a year old now and still gets to be the mop. Poochie came from a nice litter of Rotties, but he's odd-looking with great long legs and a long, pointy face. His mama tried to cull him by crushing his skull when he was only days old. He survived her bite but did suffer nerve damage: His left eye is blind, and there's no feeling on that side of his face. All of his left-side teeth fell out as they grew in, and he can't control his tongue, which hangs out ALL the time. He drools. He licks, to "find" things he can't see. Drinking and eating are both big, messy productions. Cats--even feral ones--just LOVE him and he licks them, in return. He's the smartest, funniest, kindest companion dog I've ever owned. It's a shame that he can't be cloned.

Today's Tips:

The Shaving Cream Volcano

Fun recipes for kids, GREAT babysitting idea! You will need:

  • an empty plastic bottle
  • shaving cream
  • perfume (crackly perfume from american girl works best but any will work)
  • a little body wash
Take the body wash and dump it in your bottle. Then take the shaving cream and fill up about 3/4. Fill ALMOST to the top with perfume. THEN SHAKE! Shake harder and harder for a couple of minutes then go outside (or to a sink) and pull off your cap! First you'll hear a "pop" sound from the air pressure being released and then the "lava" will come pouring out! Fun!

Source: Myself: I made it by accident by trying to make a scented perfume.

Saving Water Together

I have a one-handle kitchen faucet, and I have noticed lately that I use too much water. I have started to reduce the flow of water when I use it. Since then, I am using a lot less water. Most of the time, just a quarter of the flow is sufficient, even sometime just a trickle is enough. And I turn it off when I don't need it, even for a few seconds. I cannot stop doing this ever since I started. I feel guilty, if I don't. Just me alone won't do much, but if everybody would do it, we would save a lot of water. Pass the word.

Joke: Jewish and Catholic Wedding Song

A lovely Jewish woman was to be wed to a handsome Catholic man. Traditions were equally important to both families and this made choosing a theme song for their wedding a major challenge. The groom's brother had a rich operatic voice and was especially noted for singing Ave Maria. The bride's Mama, realizing the dilemma sighed and said "Oy vey!" "That's it!" replied the groom. Oy Vey Maria was jubilantly sung.

Source: Someone told me a simpler version of this when I was a child. They had simply asked "What song is sung at a Jewish/Catholic wedding?" The answer, of course was, "Oy Vey Maria." The embellishments are my own.

Choose The Frugal Tips That Fit Your Lifestyle

I think some people get discouraged with frugal living because they don't realize that not all tips are right for them. Frugal for a stay-at-home mother of four will be different than frugal for a childless career woman, for example. You have to sift and choose what works best with your lifestyle and circumstances.

Use Hair Spray To Remove Permanent Marker

Permanent Marker Removal for cotton clothing - As soon as possible, spray the mark liberally with hair-spray. Allow to sit for one minute then rinse in clear warm water. If some stain remains, repeat, until all stain is removed and then launder as usual. A friend of mine suggested this to me and it works great!

Egg Shells for Cutworms

Someone suggested to use crushed egg shells to get rid of cutworms . This is the best idea I ever heard. It's even better then the pellets I used to get earwigs and cutworms. It's also working well but egg shells don't cost you any money, we all buy eggs regularly. Who was the gentleman suggesting this? I can't find it again.

Saving Money in College

Tips for saving money in college as suggested by our ThriftyFun community. Do you have any advice to share? Feel free to post your ideas below.

Amazon For Textbooks

I've found Amazon.com to be a wonderful resource for buying and selling textbooks! At the end of the term, its always good to compare the $ you'll get between the bookstore and what amazon.com's lowest seller price is (you'll want to undercut them to make sure you sell quickly). The occasions when you can get more in the bookstore are rare, but the possibility exists and is more likely with textbooks.

Cooking Roast on the Grill

When it is extremely hot, I cook a pork or beef roast on my charcoal grill. You do this by using some heavy duty foil. Sprinkle meat tenderizer (inexpensive is best!) on the meat and wrap in foil making a packet. Then place on the grill and let cook. It usually takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. My family loves it and the meat is usually falling apart.

Use Fishing Line for Cake Cutter

Fishing line is a great cake cutter when you want to avoid the cake and icing transferring to the next piece. We did this at my wedding to avoid the vanilla and chocolate cake from mixing and making the icing on the cake look sloppy. I now use the line for my kids party cakes the icing stays where it's supposed to and I don't have to hear kids saying their chocolate has white on it or vise versa.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Consider the poor fellow who showed up at work one morning sleepless and haggard.

"What happened to you?" the fellow at the next desk asked.

"I was up nearly all night," the man said. "My wife and I had a terrible argument. She became historical."

"You mean hysterical," the co-worker replied.

"No. Historical," the man said. "She went over absolutely everything I've done wrong over the last 25 years."

Planning a BBQ for 100 People

I am hosting a BBQ for about 100 people. Keep in mind there are about 25 kids under the age of 12. I would appreciate any serving suggestions for all the categories of food.

As my menu, I have brats, hamburgers, pulled pork, and hot dogs. I plan to have potatoes of some sort, and corn (leaning towards canned). I will also have a 7 bean dish, as well as, potato salad, coleslaw, pickles, and pasta salad.

Snacks- cut up veggies lots of them- peppers, carrots, mushrooms, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. and fruit- strawberries, pineapple, watermelon, grapes, cantaloupe, and honeydew.

I actually have desert worked out - cup cakes of chocolate and key lime; two different desserts. I have a tendency to over feed and buy too much. Any suggestions? Oh yeah, beer, soda and lemonade for beverages.

Breakfast Bread Recipe

When I was growing up my Mom used to make a bread that she called breakfast bread. I remember that it had raisins and wheat germ in it - it was very dense and we would slice, toast, and top with butter.

If anyone has this recipe, I would be forever grateful!

Do HHO Gas Generators Work?

Last week, I was at my local mechanic's shop. He began telling me about someone who had installed an HHO gas generator. This person is also a customer of the same mechanic, so I was wondering, do HHO gas generators/electrolyzers actually work? If so, are there any major items to consider when choosing a design or installing it? My final question about these things deals with the laws of thermodynamics, since gas generates the electricity (via the alternator) that, in turn, generates the HHO gas via electrolysis, is it actually possible to recover more energy than you're putting in?

Thanks guys :)

Housebreaking A Husky Mix

We have a Husky/German Shephard mix. Annika is approx. 1 and a half. She came to live with us by way of my brother. He had a big back yard for her to run and play in and she was not used to a leash when we got her. My brother soon realized that he doesn't have time for a dog, so she has come to live with my husband and I.

We already have a beagle that we adopted from a local shelter and 2 cats. Our problem with Annika is that she potties in the house. She will do both in the house. Sometimes she pees on our bed. My brother had her kennel trained and when we are gone we have to put in a kennel, because she tears up things. She seems to poop in 2 main locations, but she pees in the middle of floor, doesn't matter which room she is in. Any advice?

We planted a weeping cherry a couple of months ago and are watching it die. The leaves are browning and the branches are empty where the leaves have already died. The problem is, this would leave me half of a tree. it's only about 6 ft tall now, faces southeast for morning sun, clay soil and average drainage. Any help would be appreciated.

Getting Money At Anniversary Party For A Vacation

My parents are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. My sisters and I are planning a surprise party with approximately 150 people. We are paying for everything ourselves but are hoping my parents will receive enough in gifts to go on a vacation.

We are not familiar with protocol for this type of party and are wondering if we should sell tickets to the event, giving my parents the money, or write "greenback" on the invitation. I personally feel they will end up with more if we put greenback on the invitation but my sister wants to sell tickets. What is proper for this type of party?

Baskin Robbins Jamoca Almond Fudge Mud Pie Recipe

For Father's Day, we purchased a Baskin Robbins Jamoca Almond Fudge Mud Pie (a family tradition). I paid $21.00. It seems to me I might be able to make one without the weird chemical tasting fake whipped cream for less money.

So far, I figured out that it needs a graham cracker crust, a layer of thick fudge on the bottom and sides of the crust, a filling of ice cream (thought I might try JA Fudge and Coconut) and a layer of fudge on top.

My question is about the fudge. Does anyone have any idea at all of what it might be made of or is it simply a fudge topping for ice cream that is available at the grocery store? Is the topping the same as the fudge on the sides and bottom?

What's a Victory Garden?
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

During WWII, Britain and the United States pushed their citizens to plant "victory gardens." These gardens were marketed to help the war effort by reducing the demand for food on the country (people grew their own instead of purchasing it), thus reducing the cost of food for the troops. Yet, the victory gardens also served another purpose; they boosted the moral of citizens on the homefront by giving them the satisfaction of "doing their parts for the war effort."

Recommendations For Plants Along Driveway

Question:

Can anyone suggest a good tree and bush to go up our 280 foot driveway. We had some and had to yank them out to do a sewer. I would like a tree about 20+ feet tall for privacy, fast growing, small roots as we have a about a 5 foot wide area between driveways. I would like a bush to do for the first 100 feet about 5-6 ft tall,

Rhododendrons look nice next to driveways.
