Scenery: Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

We live in Southern Colorado and one of my favorite things to do here is ride the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, a 100+ year old narrow gauge train that travels from Antonito, CO to Chama, NM. This picture was taken on a beautiful snowy day in September. Come visit us sometime! For those of you who don't like the chill, there are mostly warm summer days and even gorgeous Autumn days when the aspen leaves are gold, pink and orange.

Craft: Gingerbread Houses

Here is a great tradition that our family has been doing for years now. It all started about 50 years ago when I decide to make a gingerbread house for Christmas. My first ones were fairly simple but over the years have gotten more complicated and quite intricate. Now, as was bound to happen, the kids and grandkids and even my great grandson have taken over. I still do the bases for the houses but my son has even taken some of that construction over. The best part is that we have so much fun together. It's thrifty too cause we save the uneaten Halloween candy for some of the decorations. Here are some samples of their beautiful handiwork.

By Janet from Long Island NY

Editor's Note: We were unable to get these pictures up before Christmas but wanted to share them as inspiration for next year.

The Best Of Friends: Steven and Connor (Conure Parrot)

Steven's hair has been nick-named "happy hair" by his Aunt Sarah, because it sometimes sticks out all over the place. Connor, the Conure parrot, loves to stomp around in Steven's happy hair, and nibble on it. They are the best of friends.

Use Leather Shoelaces To Repair Baskets

My sisters and I have been going through our parents' personal things since their deaths. One of my children found a vintage picnic basket but the caning on the back that held the top to the bottom was broken. Rather than toss the basket, I put my thinking hat on. I found a brand new pair of leather shoelaces that I am sure were bought for my father's boots and I put them to use.

I "braided" the leather lace into the basket and repaired it using the unbroken side as my pattern. I then removed the unbroken cane and repaired the second side too. I salvaged the basket and gave it to my child as a memento of her grandparents. It may be hard to see the actual lacing in the photo because the basket and lacing are so close to the same color. If any of the other cane pieces break, I will just replace them as well with more leather shoelace.

Craft Project: Pinecone Trees
By Debra Frick

These trees are quite easy to make and they would look great on a table or any small place you would like to put them. They also seem to be the right size to go with the miniature villages that are so popular these days. This would be a great kids craft with adult supervision. Plan an outing with the kids to gather the cones. Make it even more fun and take along some hot chocolate and donuts. The best part about this craft project is that it is almost free if you live in an area with pinecones. It is also a recycling project as you are reusing old scratch CD's or DVD's. Time to complete one tree: about 15 minutes

Materials

  • 1 scratched CD or DVD
  • A bunch of small pinecones, the ones I used were from the blue spruce
  • Hot glue or a fast drying glue
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

As you can see from the picture this is a very easy project of gluing the pinecones onto the CD in a pyramid shape. So your bottom row will have more cones than the top layer. Start by sorting your pinecones into sizes. Now glue the longest ones onto the CD. On the next row glue the pinecones in between the ones on the first row. Continue until you have the height you want and glue a pinecone to the top for the top of the tree. You can the spray these with clear spray to preserve their natural beauty as I did in the picture or you can spray them with a little snow or glitter. You could even glue on small charms and beads to decorate like a real tree. These would also be really pretty with some silk berries stuck in the too. You can get silk berries at Walmart where you buy silk flowers.

Happy crafting!

Today's Tips:

Use a Metal Coffee Can to Store Bags

Easy storage for grocery store plastic bags: Save your metal coffee can when finished with them. Cut a medium size "X" in the middle of the plastic lid. As you accumulate your plastic bags stuff them in the can and when you are ready to use on, just pull the bag through the "X" in the lid.

Use Socks as Chalkboard Erasers

Little hands seem to have a hard time holding on to and using sponge or other type erasers that come with chalk boards. Slip one of the child's old socks (or new!) over the hand he is not using to write with. This makes a great eraser and so easy for the child to use. And when it is good and dirty, just toss in the machine and wash! You'll never run out of erasers!

Sharpen Electric Shaver Blades

Before you replace those blades on your electric shaver, you can easily resharpen them for a temporary new life. Make a light mixture of Mineral Oil with Toothpaste (not the gel type) and apply to the shaver's screen/blade surface. Keep the shaver plugged in to the AC source to access full power. Turn the shaver on and let the mixture re-sharpen the blades. Reapply several times.

Toothpaste has a very fine grit for cleaning the teeth; we used this method for fine tuning our open-faced fishing reels. Once you are satisfied with the process, remove the screen and blades, wash in warm, soapy water and reassemble.

Using Older Programs With Vista

Don't be afraid to use your old software on your new computer! If you use Vista, but still have Win95 programs you wish you could use, don't be afraid to try! There's a way you can, without risking crashing your operating system - and even if it doesn't work, you haven't lost or endangered anything.

As long as your software isn't virus detection, backup, or system programs, there's an installation wizard for it, built in to Vista!

From your Start menu, choose Control Panel. From there, click on Programs. Under Programs and Features, look for 'Use an older program with this version of Windows'. Click on that, and load your CD-rom into your drive, and just follow the prompts. Most Win95 programs call for 256 colors and a 640 x 480 resolution, but check your software's envelope or 'Readme' file first.

If the software doesn't work, you'll get a message reminding you that no settings were permanently changed, and for further study, they'd like you to send the attempted information along, anonymously. Hey, anything to make the next Windows better, right? :)

Hope that helps you clear out your software cabinet(s)!

Ornament Stand Centerpieces

I had to make centerpieces for an athletic banquet. Our school colors are purple and gold. I made 40 centerpieces for less than $200. I bought ornament stands (brass) off ebay in bulk. I found purple star ornaments (with flecks of gold) at a pottery store. I hung these on the stand.

Then I used fishing line to hand a smaller gold star ornament just below it. At the top of the ornament stand I attached gold wire garland with stars and shaped them into a curly design. Then, I tied a very small piece of purple wire ribbon to set it off. Very cute.

We then put small assorted sizes of cardboard boxes on the table, draped them with gold and purple fabric, put small cut glass mirror on top and placed our decorated ornament stand on top. Dollar store was great and fabric was cheap. The trick is to find the ornament stand and ornaments in bulk and on sale.

Use Dawn for Very Oily Hair

I have always had oily hair, but in the last several months the oiliness has just gotten worse and worse--to the point that I could wash it as usual and it would be extremely oily only a few hours later.

I tried several different things, lemon juice and a water solution being one, and then my mom and grandmother and I were talking and it was decided among the three of us that Dawn dish washing liquid might work wonders. And it surely has.

I wash my hair with Dawn dish washing liquid. I think I paid about $1 and some change at Wal-mart. Anyway, I wash it twice with Dawn dish washing liquid and then with the shampoo of my choosing. I have found it to be extremely helpful and you can tell a big difference in what it's done for my hair.

This may sound totally silly, and maybe it is, but if it works then so be it, I'll continue to use it for sure. Using Dawn is definitely much better than having really oily hair. :)

Emergency Dishwasher Soap

I found out we had run out of dishwasher soap - even the samples I had gotten - and I went to the internet to find out a homemade substitute. Most of them mentioned either washing soda or baking soda + borax - some others mentioned shaved Zote Soap.

We HAD baking soda - but no borax - so I filled the containers with baking soda and added a FEW DROPS of dishwasher liquid to each pan. Then we ran the dishwasher - The waste water came out nice and dirty, with a few teeny bubbles - and the dishes turned out to be nice and CLEAN.

Now, the dishes had been rinsed and were fairly clean already - and it was 1/2 a load at a full cycle - but nevertheless - it did WORK. I am getting more baking soda and will look for the borax.

(Note: the reason you can't use plain dishwashing liquid is that there would be a lot of bubbling, like a bubble bath out of control - but a few drops in the baking soda seems to be OK.)

Thrifty Fabric for Sewing Clothing

I have made shorts and blouses from a large bed sheet, also curtains, pillow cases etc. It's often cheaper than fabric from fabric store.

You can make skirts from neck ties. Take them apart, press with steam or wet cloth, sew together. Put a zipper and a band on it, make a button hole, sew button on band.

I also make shorts out of pant legs. Cut legs off as high up as you can (the crotch), remove seams. Press with wet cloth or steam iron, you are ready to cut shorts out Good luck.

Substitute Chinese 5 Spice For Pumpkin Pie Spice

Last night, I found myself making a pumpkin pie and realized I was out of cinnamon AND nutmeg and had no premixed pumkin pie spice. Not wanting to run to the store, I rummaged through my spice cabinet in search of alternatives. Chinese 5 spice blend is: Star Anise, Fennel, Cinnamon, Cloves and Pepper. It gave an interesting different flavor to the pie.

Kitchen Paint Color Advice

My kitchen and family room are open to each other. I just updated the family room paint in Behr Marsh Creek, which is a green/peacock color with sand color accents (drapes, etc.) in a more 'beachy' color theme. The kitchen counters are a similar peacock color. It has maple cabinets, beige ceramic floor, and off white appliances.

The kitchen is currently a yellow/gold with a dry-brush glaze. It was more of a tuscan/old world design, now I am looking for something more in line with new family room design. Any suggestions on paint color? The kitchen also opens to hallway and dining room painted a khaki tan color.

Stretchy, Crinkly Fabric

I bought a large amount of fabric cheap at the thrift store but have no idea what it could be used for. It is white in color, crinkly like paper and stretches somewhat like Lycra spandex but only stretches one way.

I washed a swatch to see if it would stretch more or shrink but it held it's shape. It's lightweight as well, and is a very pretty fabric. Does anyone know what this fabric is? Please let me know or if you know of a website where I might find out some info. Thanks in advance!

Puppy Will Only Pee on Newspaper

My son got himself a 10 week old collie from a farm. The dog was never trained and was kept along with 5 other pups in a barn. When the dog was taken home it peed on a newspaper within 10 minutes, ever since we cannot get the dog to pee outside. It does not help that my son lives in an upstairs flat.

I have taken the dog for 2 or 3 days at a time to try and help. I've had the dog out in the garden for more than 3 hours and you can see quite clearly she wants to go. Eventually giving up we go inside and within minutes she pees on the paper. This is a regular occurrence. Originally the dog was very timid and petrified of noises and anything that moved but it is more confident now. Can someone please help?

Teaching Puppy Not to Chew on Things

I have a new Bichon/Shih Tzu puppy names Mieko. He is the cutest thing ever. I have puppy proofed my house, but some times somethings will fall on the floor and I have been taking things away from him when he finds them. Now when he finds something he knows is not something that is he is suppose to have, he runs from me. When I finally catch him. I have started to tell him to drop it. And I try to claim it as the pack leader.

He being a only a 4 months old pup thinks I am playing. So I finally have to take it away. But I have tested him a few times by putting it on the floor and making a snapping sound or other sound and tapping him to stay away from it, at the same time giving him one of his own toys. He is so one track minded that he will continue to go for what is not his and then pee if he cannot have it. Even if I have just taken him out to pee.

How do I fix this or reprimand him with out getting upset. I tend to put him in his crate, but I know I am not to use his crate as punishment. I need a new way to help him and me with this situation. Any suggestions? Maybe I am expecting too much of him. But this could turn out to be a very bad trait for him in his future.
