Rescued Orchid

I buy plants that are marked down at stores that need to be re-potted. This way I get nice plants, but at a bargain price and save the life of a plant. This was in a broken pot with no blooms. It was my first time to grow an orchid.

Birthday Candy Cake

Materials

  • 6 styrofoam circles - 2 in each ascending size: 8" 6" and 4"
  • 1 candle topper or bobble head
  • 1 bag of large individually wrapped jaw breakers
  • 1 bag of individual gum
  • Approx 5 bags of candy (depends on size of candy)

Directions

Glue together each set of foam circles to make one thick circle in each size. Glue or pick pin each circle on top of each other. Make sure you get as close to middle as possible. Use low temp glue gun and start glueing the miniature candy bars all around. I used gum to hide any foam showing between each layer. I topped it with a ice cream cone candle that I found at the dollar store but you can use any cake toppers they have at party store, bobble heads, etc. I finished with adding jaw breakers around the topper to make sure no foam shows. Make sure you use wrapped candies so kids can eat it and you can use any candy you want, this is just a point of reference.

Chicklet (Arab/Quarterhorse)

Chicklet is 20 years old and is an Arab/quarterhorse that I rescued. She loves to hang out with her other horse friends and graze on the meadow grass. Chicklet is a real sweetheart. She had a really hard life before. However now that she is here on our homestead, she is very happy and healthy.

Today's Tips:

Income Tax Payment Is A Wake Up Call

A year ago, I owed an unexpected $900 on my federal income tax return. I juggled a few financial responsibilities, cut some costs and was able to pay my tax bill by April 15.My Frugal Life

I was already pretty frugal, but I found I could be more so. It felt good and I kept it up. Now, because I can manage my day-to-day expenses better, I'm actually chipping away at my wish list. Last Christmas, I actually managed to spend $500 on a new computer and LCD monitor, in addition to buying holiday gifts. And this spring, I paid a $374 tax bill with only a grimace. I still live mostly paycheck to paycheck, but it's less of a struggle because I'm more penny-conscious than I used to be.

I avoid going to the grocery store until I'm pretty much out of everything. If I run out of milk or bread or eggs, I'll stop at the discount store rather than expose myself to a store full of food. If I walk into a grocery store for milk and bread, I walk out with $40 worth of groceries. I buy most of my toiletries at the dollar store, which has some good name brands that perhaps have fallen out of fashion. Breck shampoo? I grew up with it. I'll buy that for a dollar. The Jergens hand lotion (original scent, cherry almond, mmmm) I looked everywhere for. I finally found it on the shelf of my local dollar store. I buy six at a time.

I buy good-condition clothing, household items and some electronics (I try to test the electronics stuff first) at garage sales or Goodwill. I search for bargains on eBay. My last computer cost $100. I just picked up an Nintendo 64 for $5, which pairs up with my $1 Playstation. I let friends and family give me stuff they don't want. I happily take home leftovers. I rarely eat out and I always bring my meals to work.

Saving money brings me a feeling that is similar to that which I get from spending money on something I want. Both are about control in my life:

  • If I save money, I show myself that I am controlling that which I can do something about.
  • If I spend money, I show myself that I have the power to do so. I can make that decision.
Being frugal feels good. I'd like to think that I would keep some of my frugal ways if I came into money. At the very least, I'd keep buying my Jergens hand lotion at the dollar store. Mmmm.

Easy Fruit Crepes

I make my pancake batter thin, then I put it in a hot frying pan and spread the batter thin. Brown both sides. Then take a can of cherry, apple or blueberry pie filling and fill crepe. Roll crepe seam on bottom and top with powdered sugar and cool whip. It is a family fav.

Tidy Bush Trimming

Don't like to trim bushes because it's messy? Try this method. Put an old sheet under the bush you need to trim. Make sure it's all the way around the bush. Trim your bush as usual. After trimming, fold up sheet and dump trimmings in your paper lawn bag. No mess trimming anymore!

Pool Chlorine Tip

Having a hard time keeping chlorine in the pool? Check your stabilizer levels. Unstabilized chlorine will burn out of a pool with less than 4 hours of exposure to sunlight. Cyanuric acid is needed to stabilize chlorine and should be approximately 20-40ppm in the water to ensure chlorine isn't burned off by the sunshine. However, never exceed 60ppm or it will bind the free chlorine in your pool and render it virtually useless.

Start Holiday Crafts Now

Start any holiday (Halloween through Christmas) crafting now, especially if you do craft shows or just for gifts. This way you won't be stuck at the last minute trying to finish gifts. At the very least, make a list of crafts and items needed. Some can be probably found at yard sales or clearance sections.

Cheap Mac n' Cheesy Chicken Pasta

I like to cook up a box of Mac n cheese and when the noodles are almost done I add 1 crushed up pack of Ramen noodles. I then add the butter, milk cheese packet AND the Chicken seasoning packet. It turns out to taste like Cheesy Chicken Pasta. Very good! I also make some cheap garlic bread (microwave soggy version) with McCormick's Garlic and seasonings (no salt version) and butter with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on top to go along with it. I get about 4 meals out of this easy.

Marigolds for Aphids

Garden pests, especially aphids can't stand to be around marigolds, so I plant them around everything, especially carrots and strawberries. Marigolds spread so nicely on their own. When the marigolds are all dried up pull the seeds out of where the flower was and either plant them or put them in a plastic bag for next year.

Including Everyone at a Wedding Reception

My daughter is getting married in August. We live in a small town, so the places for a reception are limited. We are using our country club and it will be both indoors and out. How can I make all the guests feel like they are included? The dance and cake table, etc. will be inside.

Bougainvillea Damaged By Cold

My bougainvillea froze last winter and now is just sticks but the stems seem to be getting red in color. Does this mean there's still hope? I trimmed some. Should I cut more? They are planted in the ground and used for arbor cover but only made it to the top last summer.

Don't people RSVP to invitations anymore?

Don't people RSVP to invitations anymore? I have yet to hear from 13 people that I sent invitations to (out of 19 sent). Should I get on the phone and track them down? I think they are being very rude, and I'm kind of afraid of telling them off. I'm also sad for my son, since the party is for him.

Saving Money on Entertainment

The first thing you should do is set up a budget for entertainment. Determine how much you can afford to spend each month on entertainment so that you don't spend money that is needed for other areas of your budget, like bills, food and other essentials. Be sure to factor in monthly entertainment fees, like cable TV, when creating your budget.
