"An inexpensive way to keep your septic system working properly, is to take one packet of dry yeast and a box of brown sugar and pour this down your toilet about every 3-4 months. I learned about this many years ago, and during the 12 years I'd been doing this, I never had a problem with the septic system.Seems the yeast and brown sugar put beneficial bacteria back into your system, that may have been diminished through the use of chemical cleaners & etc.

the best way to treat a septic tank is prevention. Do
not use stuff like bleach,colored Toilet Paper, Most
drain cleaners, grease. make sure washing powder is
a bio degradable brand. Also try your best to limit the
amount of water going down the drain,especially during
times of heavy rainfall. Put your foot down,and make your
family take quick showers instead long extended ones.

"Most theories deal with "seeding" the septic tank to get good bacterial growth started. Advice has ranged from flushing a pound of yeast into the system, to seeding the septic tank with manure, all the way to placing a dead cat in the septic tank. The Health Department doesn't recommend any of these".

that just feeds the bacteria you have. it gets fed enough just by waste you normaly put in the toilet. if you don't put anything in the tank that can't be eaten and don't put in a bunch of stuff to kill the eaters you could go 50 years without pumping.
